eyeball Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Beijing wants a relationship of trust with its oil suppliers - and that means it usually prefers to buy from authoritarian regimes in Africa, Latin America or the former Soviet Union, where there are no complications about democracy or minority rights. Story I'm sure everyone can recall how the US policy towards similar complications in Iran in 1953 consequently led to 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq...who knows where next? I trust Alberta was able to resist any suggestion it simply round up any troublemakers that are getting in the way of progress like they do in China and countries its more friendly towards. This demonstration of China's reluctance to square off against our reputation for being a moral superpower encourages me to keep up the call for Canada to use resource exports and economic sanctions to thwart the progress of other super-rogues. Now that we've got China's attention we should be seriously thinking about applying heavy tarrifs on their imports, tariffs tied to democracy and minority rights. Ergonomic Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 The Chinese have already finessed the West with its investments in AFrica. The West had the power to support Africa for decades and ignored the opportunity. A lot of Africa will be speaking Mandarin in the future.... Quote

I don't know, Africa will probably be to China what the ME is to the US. China's very own Waterloo. Super-rogues are all the same, sooner or later they wade out into the deep end and get in over their heads. Like anyone else who starts drowning they become a danger to those around them. It does seem like Africa is heating up these days so it probably won't be long before Chinese skyscrapers start falling too. What other countries will buy our oil? Pretty well every other country! Slight exaggeration.,Only Quote Whatever Thy Hand Finds To Do- Do With All Thy Might!
fellowtraveller Posted February 5, 2008 Report Posted February 5, 2008 This article is a pack of innuendo and half truths. The Chinese wanted to invest in a huge project a couple of years ago, with exclusive use of a pipeline to Prince Rupert and the harbour there. The implication that China only wants to deal with places like Iran and Iraq and the Stans or even Venezuela is laughable. They are far less stable than Canadian supplies, and far more likely to toss out the contracts on a whim. I say screw 'em. Leave it in the ground if need be. Quote The government should do something.
