The opposition parties have make very plain that the gov't should keep Schreiber here in Canada until we have heard from him testify. The Minister of Justice has it in his power to do so and we will learn if he does or doesn't today. I would think it would be a bad political move to let this man be force to Germany for Harper with an election up coming in the future.

Schreiber has successfully avoided extradition for the past 8 years and it's likely that he'll avoid it for another 8 years. He's had one appeal go to the Supreme Court and his lawyer Eddie Greenspan plans another.

Canada has given an entirely new meaning to the term "due process". We have yet another enquiry into the Air India terrorist attack (no one ever convicted almost 25 years later) and another enquiry into the dealings of an ex-PM. How many immigrants are waiting now for another hearing? How many others like Schreiber are waiting to submit another document to advance their cause?

Canada, blessed with God's bounty, wastes it in investigations, court depositions and hearings. If Canada is a model for the world, then the future will be filled with endless bureaucratic studies and quasi-judicial panels.

:blink::ph34r:  NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO we should not keep him here. It's in the Liberals best interest to keep him here so they can keep lamenting on Lian Brian and the scandle that "Isn't" "Wasn't" I'm tired of my taxdollars being wasted to further the Liberal Party's agenda of scandle mongering. Two million wasn't enough, a inquiry is going to cost how much exactly? When does the wasting of our tax dollars stop? How much is enough for the left?

Of course the government will keep Schrieber here and not extradite him until the inquirey is over. You have already seen Schrieber talking his way thru a lot of what he said, first by taking any and all heat off of Harper, by also saying that it is more then possible that Harper did not see the letter he sent, as he also sent the same letter to all party leaders at the same time and none of them have said anything about it either until just now. That kind od tells you just where and how all this is going to work out does it not?

Before this is over we will find that the money was for a pasta factory and what ever, and really had nothing to do with Airbus etc. The silly games played by the man who like to remain behind the scenes and pull strings. The trouble is the Liberals jumped on this so fast that they now will have to back paddle real fast, to not get caught in the currents and go over the falls. But I guess Dion preferrs it to having to eat everyones crap. This guy just has no credibility in anything any more, and I am surprised he still has not resigned yet.

Anything he may want to say can be said from a jail cell in Germany.

If he is in the custody of the German government, could he refuse to testify out of spite for having been extradited? This guy is really slippery. Who knows what his next move might be when things don't go his way.

Canada could make it a condition of extradition. I don't think the Germans are angry with Canada for following its laws. Anything Schieber says is suspect at the best of times but it would be even more suspect if he thinks what he says could keep him in Canada. Better to send him back first.

You badgered and followed and were relentless in pursuit when you felt an inappropriate description of a Liberal MP was given.

However, you have no problem using an epithet like stevey. A name that is demeaning and against the rules of the board.

Care to explain the double-standard?

I will remind you that you also said this

I can be unknowingly hypocritical I would think. Feel free to call me on it , and I will post an explanation/retraction/apology post haste.

I think this definitely falls into the hypocritical category.

We probably could have sent the man back to Germany earlier if Mulroney had not accepted $300,000 in cash from the man and then denied really knowing him.

God knows how Schreiber and his lawyers have extended an extradition hearing to eight years but I imagine Mulroney's name was mentioned - along with Chretien, Trudeau and now Harper.

The OP asks whether the government will stop Schreiber from leaving and my response is that our Canadian judicial sense of "due process" stops everything. Why did this case ever get to the Supreme Court? Why would it ever get there twice?

Heck, this is not an isolated case. Indian land claims, Air India investigations, bridge collapses, pepper spray, wrongful imprisonment, child molesting priests, refugee claims, tainted fish. Canadian "due process" means endless judicial reviews (involving many lawyers at the public trough) and then no guilty party - but a settlement financed by taxpayers.

Wait and see. I wouldn't be surprised if Schreiber winds up receiving taxpayer money ($300,000?) as a settlement.

Such is Canada in the 21st century. How do we afford it? We have wonderful natural resources easily taxed by our governments.

I doubt it. Schieber isn't the only foreign criminal milking our system: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/.../18/bc-lai.html

If the Tories want to expedite his and other cases, let them. They won't with China to teach them a lesson. As for Shreiber, the issue of the $300,000 has kept him around for the last four years.

The Tories could say no in two weeks and toss out Shreiber to make a point and call off the inquiry.

You're wrong.

Schreiber's status in Canada may have been political 10 years ago but now it is beyond politicians. Now it is an affair of "due process". (Riverwind's post above is illustrative. Dobbin, do you have any idea of how many cases like Schreiber's are pending?)

Greenspan will likely take this once again to our Supreme Court. Heavens.

Just how many cases are there? We see two here. Is there 50 cases? 100 hundred? Thousands? I really don't know but I'd love to see some citation before I'll believe that it is widespread problem.

Shreiber has been a citizen of Canada since 1982 and the country is under no obligation to extradite him if we feel he has been hiding information needed for an investigation. However, his last appeal is up and the Justice minister is under no legal obligation to keep him in the country because he has had his due process.

The only leverage to get Shreiber to reveal his information is the deportation order.

Harper has been in government for two years. They share their part of the blame for Shreiber still being here. Two previous Justice ministers in the Harper government could have expedited the situation but didn't.

The decision to call an inquiry is Harper's. The Liberals for all their criticism on this file were not able to disturb the calm Harper felt on the issue. Last Monday, he smiled broadly at the prospect of opening an inquiry into Chretien and Martin as a threat if he heard any more on the Mulroney issue.

By Friday he perfectly chastened with a long affidavit where his name appeared.

This is an issue Harper could have dealt with in many ways prior to exploding last Friday.

There is no reason why this dog and pony show couldn't continue even if he is extradited to Germany.

This entire furor has been started by Schreiber.

He conveniently timed his most recent allegations to coincide with his deporation order.

He doesn't care about Canada.

From today's Globe:

And in a telephone interview yesterday, Mr. Schreiber warned that if he's sent back to Germany, the inquiry won't hear from him.

"Not one fucking word would I say," Mr. Schreiber said from the Toronto West Detention Centre. "Not one word," he repeated.

I will have to say that I may have spoke too soon when I said that Schrieber would get his extradition withdrawn durin g the inquirey. I think it will play out the same no matter if he is extrdited or not. The German Government has given the Canadian authorities promises that Schrieber will be made available for questioning and testifying, at the needs of the the inquirey. They are even willing to have him brought back for personal testifying if need be. But I would think that testimony via video link will be all that is needed in this and that can easily be done.

Schrieber has played his biggest cards to try and get his extradition lifted, and it look like he may well fail to get this done. That means he will need to be prepared to his pwn case in Germany, where he will not be so willing to talk about bribes and underhanded money etc.. This will be very interesting, as the more he lets out of the bag about things here in Canada, the stronger the case Germany will have against him. I guess he is used to the high pressure tactics used by goverments, more then I am, but I would have to say that he will be very forgetful about things once he is in Germany's hands.

I think Harper did the right thing by calling the inquirey, but I only hope that the scope of it is narrowed to the points that we have found new and maybe that way we will have a limited cost for this. Mulroney will want to use this as his stage to change peoples ninds about him and if left to have free rein, he will make it a costly inquirey, and that too is not something I would want. But since the opposition asked for this and got it pretty much as soon as they asked for it, I would think much of the blame for this will lie with the opposition Liberals. They just can not do anything right it seems.

I find the idea of giving into this extortion artist so distasteful that I would rather send him back to germany. We can still have an inquiry without him. His testemony is actually quite irrelevant because nothing he says can be trusted anyways.

Yes , yes it does fall into the category since it is an accusation coming from someone who posted about Steph......

I think stevey can take it. ...steph can too. Not so sure about jack or lucy.

IMO this inquiry would not be happening if Harper himself wasn't named in the affidavit and if Mulroney hadn't asked for it. When the Libs said they wanted an inquiry Steve said no, and if he was pressured by the opposition for one he would open up inquiries on Chretien and Martin as revenge.

This has nothing to do with the Libs as much as Dion would like to claim credit for it.

I said yesterday that I thought they would deport him.

Today, I think the government is leaning towards that.

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/071116/...roney_schreiber

OTTAWA - The Conservative government is refusing to say whether it will postpone the extradition of Karlheinz Schreiber to Germany.

Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day says a pending public inquiry into the Mulroney-Schreiber affair will have the power to subpoena witnesses "wherever they might be."

Opposition MPs are all demanding the Conservative government intervene to ensure Schreiber stays in Canada so he can testify under oath.

I think after he's gone though that the inquiry will be called off.

So are you admitting and trying to justify your use of the inappropriate Stevey?

Maybe that explains this:

I have made errors , mistakes in thought or facts, and I always readily acknowledge them in a follow up post. That way I am not seen as one guilty of pot meeting kettle.

On Canada AM this morning Lisa Laflamme was explaining the argument regarding Shreiber's deportation. She said it was very complex and she did her best to dumb it down for the audience. In a nutshell, apparently Switzerland accuses Germany of gathering evidence that under international rules would not be admissible in a court of law. Other international agencies agree with Switzerland and say that Canada's international reputation and relations could be harmed by allowing this deportation.
