Will the Conservatives win any Quebec seats?
seabee replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Mr. Martin is a Franco-Ontarian, not a Québécois by birth. This play to some extent in Québec. However, he has moved to Québec a rather long time ago. His French is not really the language he is most fluent in; he does stammer and hesitate a lot. He is definitely more at ease in English. -
Will the Conservatives win any Quebec seats?
seabee replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It may be a tad premature to make any prediction about the CPC in Québec, as there is still a debate in French scheduled for tonight. Probably, Duceppe will target Harper as his main target, as the Liberals are now quite lame (though he will certainly make some mileage attacking Martin on the Option-Canada scandal, whith plays much bigger in Québec than in the ROC). It would, after all, be a wetdream come true for independantists in Québec if a federal government be led by a ROC-based party with no representation from Québec; it would no longer be provincial vs federal politics only, but in addition English- versus French-Canada. Let us wait and see a bit. -
Why Did Trudeau Create Quebec Separatism
seabee replied to rbacon's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
A possible key to the mystery would be L'Ordre de Jacques-Cartier (OJC). Chance has it that TFO will broadcast a documentary on it next wednesday, 8 p.m.. If it is the same one I saw in 2001, produced by RDI, you will learn a lot about this secret organisation, but realise that there is a lot more to be learned from their recently released archives. -
Will Quebec and Ontario Change their Votes?
seabee replied to SamStranger's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Québec votes Bloc. Last time, 54 seats out of 75. THat's not voting Liberal. -
Funny, because it is actually the other way around. For most people in Québec, the Reform turned Alliance turned Conservative party is viewed as a racist, anti-bilingualism, anti-French(-Canadian) party, that loves guns, wants more military, even military in the cities (a reminder of October 1970) and suspect that if they get elected, Québec would be pur in a perpetual War Measures Act state. The Cons have a racist and violent underbelly. The people also loathe the religiosity of the Cons; it reminds them too much of the pre-1960 era, and they certainly don't want a return to La Grande Noirceur (The Great Darkness) as the Duplessis era is referred to. Get religion out of politics. As if the 1995 referendum had not had ambiguous results. Yet, there was not one terrorist act following it. What? First time this has ever been suggested by anyone anywhere in whatever language. This is even more improbable due to the fact the Québécois are massively (80%) against the war in Iraq and see George Bush as a threat to world peace.

Hockey, Olympics, Quebec, Bertuzzi

And the Saquenéens are not even close to representing Canada on the world stage. Shane Doan is! -

No, it was not not! That is why the appropriate authorities almost immediately apologized and decried those taunts. They did not go into a denial attitude. -

True. After all, he is only a "fucking" Anglo-Canadian. -

A few interisting coincidences: Shane Doan makes racist remarks. Denis Coderre, a liberal, denounces them. There is a federal election going on. The Bloc Québécois leads in all polls, and the liberals are likely to loose a few ridings. The movie "Maurice Richard", which shows how he resisted racist attacks, is a hit in Québec. I do not know how to make sense of all this. -

Quebec, Canada & the Federal Liberals
seabee replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
How can people become stewards of the country without first being elected, which means pandering to the voters. It seems to be a vicious circle. -
M. Bosclair clarifies his position

Of course; the Anglo-Canadian way; victims should shut up! They must be ridiculed if they complain. They have been victimized for their own good, and they are too stupid to realize it. -
[/quote|This is just a blatent attempt at ethnic vote buying, surely the voters won't be fooled again. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How Parizeau-like.

Québec, the province, did not exist before the BNA act. Nor did this act create a "Confederation", but rather a "federal Dominion". This is very clear in the preamble of the act: The present day Province of Québec was created by article 6 of said act. Unless wants to refer to the 1763 Province of Quebec, which was, before that, the French colony of Canada, which included present day southern Ontario. One way or another, an exchange could be offered; northern Québec for southern Ontario. Toronto, start learning French now! -

Today, every tax-payer in Québec pays his share of the federal debt as well as his share of Québec's debt. He also pays income tax to both the federal and the provincial government. Should Québec become independant and assume its share of the federal debt, for the tax-payer, it will just mean that he has only one check to make come income tax time, the amount of which is roughly equal to the sum of the two separate checks he used to make. It is a consolidation of debts. -

The message to federalists in Québec, including anglophones, is simple. The NO side better win, because if the YES side does win, then the ROC will drop you like a hot potato. You'll be stranded on your own. -

Just a hypothesis! In politics, timing is important. A federal election is almost inevitable in the next few months. Could it be that Mr. Boisclair's stance about law C-20 is a trap for the federalist parties, particularly the liberals, to make Québec's independance an important issue that might not have been there otherwise? That could please Mr. Duceppe no end. Who says politics is boring? -

PLQ & Jean charest, worst government ever...

Even though he has just received a 76,2% confidence vote, Bernard Landry has just resigned as leader of the PQ, considering this result as not strong enough. He also resigns as MNA from Verchères.
