  1. How so? Has anyone here been charged with anything or are you referring to a group of people shouting down an ignoramus? It doesn't seem that one group - exercising their freedom of speech against another group - exercising their free speech, constitutes anything other than what most people here want. Coulter wasn't shouted down at Western or in Calgary. So how does one protest equate with the evidence that free speech in Canada is a myth?
  2. Very well said, and I think most reasonable people would have to agree. And she did as evidenced by her speaking engagement at Western and again last night in Calgary. Oh, oh. I suspect Mr. Canada-isms sneaking into the text now... Of course you are referring to Birmingham in 1966? No, that was records. You must have been referring to one of these incidents. Of course the burning of the Harry Potter book in Michigan was just the tip if the iceberg. They even burned a Coneheads DVD! The Coneheads for gawdsakes! I see. So you will defend to the death Coulter's right to speak, but would silence those who disagree with her? Or silence those who disagree with you? It sounds like you are the one that is offended and only want to read and hear what you want. How does that work again? Freedom of speech or freedom of choice? Read 'Crowds and Power' by Elias Canetti. The handful of people that showed up to cause problems were exploiting a power which usually indicates a decent degree of mental acuity and discipline. If you are going to hate them get to know them because they know you pretty well already.
  3. It's Tunney's Pasture. Word got out that they were liquidating test monkeys in the secret basement labs at the Health Canada building and PETA has threatened to retaliate. Plus they want to have an outdoor Ann Coulter concert on the steps of the Stats Canada building and need to secure the place from the crazy left-wing, pseudo-student scat disturbers. Ted Nugent is the first act.
  4. No. We're afraid the children might hear.
  5. For sure, I mean, look what this sort of thing did for Andrew Dice Clay and his book sales and movie career and other junk. He had his groupies I am sure.
  6. There is a huge wind farm just outside of Arthur, ON. Very cool. Your bill went up 8$? Hmmmm... If you conserve your household electricity, go green and reduce your needs, how are the poor, struggling hydro companies supposed to meet their profit margins? Multiply this conservation by millions - that represents a significant loss. I mean, there are executive bonuses to pay, payments to be made to former CEO's and generous salaries and benefits to employees. And lets not forget the actual cost of energy that has to be bought when we exceed our planned usage requirements. I mean, all those 3500 sq foot houses in Markham must be heated in the winter and cooled in the summer.
  7. In the words of Pete Townsend in the well known 'Won't Get Fooled Again:' Meet the new boss Same as the old boss
  8. Seriously, you are equating Ann Coulter's little university snugfest with some of the most important social changes in history because it is somehow linked with free speech? I would love it if she had her complaints heard by the Canadian Human Rights Commission. It would be one of the best things that could happen for speech laws in Canada? Why? Because it would expose her to a large audience outside the confines of the comfy little university auds and more people would see her for what she really is. And they would also get insight into the types of people that support 'her kind' by attending her burlesque shows. Let her speak and let her remove all doubt with the largest audiences possible.
  9. Hilarious rebuttal by Rosie DiManno in today's Star. I doubt The Kingdom of Toronto would be able to keep all that coin. Think: equalization payments. The Kingdom of Toronto has defined boundaries. I doubt Durham, Halton, Peel or York would join. Well, maybe York would. And if it meant giving up Pickering to stay out of the Kingdom of Toronto, I am sure the Region of Durham would jump at that chance.
  10. First of all, let's get our read on history oriented towards Canada. It doesn't take much to see that colonialism in Canada was a short lived phenomenon that was dealt with through various instruments of goverment like federalist legislation & Indian treaties. The affect of colonialism in Canada was nothing like it was in the States. There were detrimental affects to the indigenous population in Canada for sure - as there was on the French & Metis populations, but by and large those affects were mitigated over time through legislation and other agreements, including the formation of provinces. Do you have some clear and concise examples of this? Sure immigration could have this effect. But there has never been any conclusive evidence that immigration in Canada has never been beneficial for the country other than a few blowhards whining about it from time to time. And every period in Canadian history records the opinions of said blowhards. And yet we still kept our doors open and the country grew. Another conclusion based upon a 'what if' argument. Sheesh. What you see as politically correct could - and likely often does - turn out to be sound business acumen. For instance, here are all these new people who are earning all this money and want to buy a house. Let's give them a mortgage. That sort of thing. But the first question one must ask of your 'what if' is why on earth would a bank come out and say anything about immigration? Now you are stretching the bounds of plausibility with some fairly odious assumptions of A) how our democracy works & that Canadian Muslims will necessarily be anti-Israeli or anti-semetic or whatnot. Come on now. There are some 308 seats in Parliament in a party system that practically demands adherence to party policy and views. Do you think a couple of radical Muslims from the GTA are going to somehow be heard to any influencial degree from the backbenches? Secondly, whose to say that anything "rife" in the Arab world will have any weight in the Canadian world? This is true. But so what? Is there some sort of rule that states offspring of immigrants must be fully assimilated cultural Canadians after one generation? Or are you simply trying to create boogeyman out of a few limited instances in specific areas of the country? Argus' statistic on the population of the Holiday Innes in Ottawa is unsubstantiated. And if it were true, it is the exception not the rule and it's impact is minimal and non-disruptive. But most aren't because ethnic conclaves have limits to the success that can be achieved which is why most immigrants - throughout Canadian history - have chosen integration into mainstream Canada. But regardless, they will still be exposed through the curriculuum of our education system, our media systems and other cultural instruments. And by and large they will at least have a choice. You are merely referring to neighbourhoods, not a country. Tell me, how has Rosedale in Toronto had an effect on you?
  11. Anytime, but be careful what you ask for because you just might get it!
  12. I can't speak for the other guy, but I was busy having a life. Something you may want to consider. Not one of my "flock" and besides, he had his own lawyers to defend him. Do you mean like the Magna Carta or something?
  13. The problem with Ahenakew is that he made his comments while in a position of power and influence which could be seen as an incitant. It was right to charge him and send him through the system to sort it out.
  14. I think the only reasonable way to "debunk" your "facts" would be a healthy dose of olanzapine and a lengthy stay in a comfortable room with a new self-hugging jacket.
  15. History of Immigration to Canada - wiki article Immigration- Canadian Encyclopedia article Moving Here, Staying Here - The Canadian Immigrant Experience - National Archives of Canada Now, I see what Mr. Hardner says as pretty spot on which would indicate your knowledge of Canada is limited to a span of 30 years. Which would be a phenomenon in itself, but a thread in its own right.
  16. Indeed! Well worth the read!
  17. What parallel government in the Costa Rican Civil War was 'recognized' by the US government? Irrelevant. " " Except for those families who lost sons and fathers, had their farms burned out or their town burned down. You don't know Canadian history very well. Were those before or after many Americans (and Canadians, Indians & British) were shot? When?
  18. Of course not, but that is only defined by scale. The point is that Canadian "compromise" has also been suggested by lead musket ball and bayonet. We have our rebellions, some worse than others; we have had our internal wars and conflicts; how many times have we thrown off the Yanks? We didn't compromise with them in the Revolutionay War or the War of 1812, we shot them. I think this is a titch idealist. I think if you do a careful read of Canadian history, you will find that we have had our comparable share of violence, violent repression and conflict especially in the middle 19th century. Sure mob violence at Union elections is not civil war, but is that what you mean by "compromise?" Did the Family Compact compromise? Yikes!
  19. Ah, I see your point. You see the word "country" as synonymous with "nation." Fair enough.
  20. You keep coming back for more there Nancy. Perhaps you are revealing a weird twist to your personal psychological make-up? Because, remember, you posted this already: And yet you keep bothering.
  21. How would you know Nancy? The only thing you can fall back on is a mildly retarded and highly ineffectual opinion. You wouldn't know a 'fact' from shinola. Go back to your tinkertoys.
  22. What definition of 'civil war' are you going on? Merriam-Webster has a very succinct definition "a war between opposing groups of citizens of the same country." Wiki's definition is simply a matter of scale. All three were fought between different 'political entities' of citizens of the same country whether there was any colonial attachment or not.
  23. Not at all. In fact there are many things "native" that need correction or redirection. The problem is, people with little or no knowledge of the 'facts of life' insofar as it relates to Canada and immigrants/natives/minorities/Americans (take your pick) tend towards bigotry because instead of careful and thoughtful investigation they reel back on their preconceived ideas when confronted with facts that are contrary to their reasoning. Sometimes those preconceived ideas are based upon sterotypes that are not only innapropriate for discussion, but they are simply wrong. And then, of course, using derogatory language about another group of people doesn't help does it? Actually, while not a compliment by any means, at least bigots show some form of honesty and, when given the opportunity and information, I have seen more than a few change their tune. As well, I have known a few that play the bigot card to fit in - like some macho bravado they use to gain access to social groups. I suspect some posters here are just like that. They are likely thoughtful people who would never behave that way in mixed company.
  24. Have you tried the reachback programs through Employment Ontario to try and get onto the Second Career program? Generally when I hear someone say they cannot get a job in their chosen area of interest that means that particular sector is flooded and there is no urgent requirements. Second Career will aid in changing career paths.
