Compromise -The Essence of Canadian Political Philosophy
Shwa replied to August1991's topic in Political Philosophy
Let's see if the rebellions can satisfy your requirements: Lower Canada - Patriote Party majority in the Assembly of Lower Canada vs The British Crown (political entities & {roughly} parallel governments. By certain acts the majority in the Assembly demonstrated sovereignty until put down. Upper Canada - MacKenzie's Reformers versus the Family Compact Loyalists. Red River Rebellion - Metis versus Canadian Government Northwest Rebellion - Metis vs Canadian government. When I say 'beside the point' I simply mean a matter of scale: So while the term rebellion could be considered correct on the issue of scale, in all of these conflicts there was a measure of opposing political views, the establisment of governing bodies - either existing or being created. Saying 'political leadership of Canada' is no more true than saying the Rebels, in the War Between The States, had the goal of overthrowing the US government in favour of their rule. Note that during the actual ACW, the term rebellion was frequently used to describe the conflict: And: -
Keep trying there Dorothy, Kansas is just up ahead! Or maybe it is a little closer that you think: Whoa ho, lookie here now: Mr. Lunebox is telling you that you need to back up your "empty testimonials" with references! Something he himself refuses to do on account of the threat such references would have on his tinkertoy logic. No doubt another bigot hiding behind the hypocrite's veil. At least posters like Mr. Canada and g_bambino don't try and hide their bigotry and are at least honest about it. Maybe Dorothy isn't the right nickname for Lunebox, maybe it should be Nancy.

Compromise -The Essence of Canadian Political Philosophy

We did? Huh. Then what are these? Lower Canada Rebellion Upper Canada Rebellion Northwest Rebellions OK, that they are called "rebellions" are beside the point. And yes, we did not have the same level of carnage as the ACW. But it goes to show that some compromises in Canada were forged with bayonet and lead musket ball. As for the ACW, well, that was more than 30 million people fighting it out using old-school tactics that didn't match the new school technology such as rifles and rifled cannon. (The tactics did not meet up with the technology until later in the war.) Comparatively, Canada's population in 1861 was about 10% of the US. -

Shameless self-promotion. -
Another weak dodge from a tactless boor on the fringe whose only accomplishment is in taking themselves for granted. No requirement for proof, when simple persistence will do. Close your eyes, click your heels three times and repeat yourself. Eventually you'll land back in Kansas Dorothy.

I believe you are going to be waiting a long time. Lunebox doesn't appear to have the intellectual capacity for facts.
-
Hey Lunebox, I have asked you a direct question regarding Canadian law with regard to the ownership of the land you live on and all you can reply with is ineffectual tripe that has ripened a little too long. Weak, unintelligible and intellectually deficient. Who said anything about "millions" having to give up their homes? You did. As if people are supposed to try and answer your delusional scenarios. You have built yourself a pretty nice comfy castle in the sky and pretty soon you will be citing your authority as coming directly from God. You know, the source of those voices you hear in your head.

From the Toronto Star this morning: Conservatives eye new lyrics for our national anthem Published On Thu Mar 4 2010 Richard J. Brennan and Bruce Campion-Smith Ottawa Bureau OTTAWA—Three days after Canadians belted out “O Canada” to celebrate the nation’s Olympic hockey win, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives are asking whether the anthem should be changed. The phrase “In all thy sons command” has some women calling for a gender-neutral version, Industry Minister Tony Clement says, citing an email from a constituent. “For 50 years ..... I’ve listened to our anthem and felt excluded by the line,” Tina Prietz, 60, of Huntsville, Ont., wrote to Clement. “Yes, you’ve guessed it, I’m female.” The Conservative government said in Wednesday’s throne speech it will ask Parliament to examine the original wording of the anthem. Rest of the story... ----------------------------------------------------

Limp dodge. And slightly delusional since it purports to speak for "self-interested human beings." Speaks for "Canadians" now. Delusional and a little crazy. Not only does he speak for self-interested human beings, Canadians, now he is speaking on behalf of "human nature." Now he speaks on behalf of all humanity because he wants FN's to be "normal" human beings as if to say that he knows what "normal" is. OMG, Moonbox is a nutcase! The rule of law does not count for anything in Moonbox's little world. A petulant little Napolean who is going to conquer the world with his "logic" of normal, self interested human beings. Of course, I now get the reference to "moon" box as the room in which they house the lunatics. On the other hand, it is nice to see that they are allowing the patients in the psych ward to have access to the Internet. They shouldn't be deprived. It's only delusion after all.

Yep, a clumsy dodge. Flimsy even. Weak. The fact is you can only cite your lofty opinion, but cannot grasp the reality of what you talk about through the instruments of jurisprudence. Instead you blather on with repetitive scatological arguments. Really, when you have the nads to actually back up your opinion with some real Canadian law, please do. But I doubt you will. Heck I doubt you even know how to since it isn't on US television.
-
Perhaps. But that is such a simplistic explanation. Especially when I have only asked for citations of Canadian jurisprudence that prove you own the land you live on, as stated by Mr. Moonbox. I am not sure what the delay is in that request. I mean, considering the idea is felt so strongly, then surely there must be unequivocal evidence of this statement within Canadian law. Now asking for evidence is entirely reasonable is it not? Well? Where is it?

But you said "Harris did something..." Well, what did he actually do to improve the MRI wait times in Ottawa? Were they any better than they are now? You are saying that McGuinty hasn't showed any interest in "solving the problem" so are you saying that what Harris actually did was cause the problem? And no, people with broken limbs shouldn't be hopping at all.

Thanks a lot Steve! Just what Canada needed!

And in the cases-in-point above, this type of subversion is more like how Lewinski subverted Clinton. -
Really? Well a few posts ago I asked you to cite Canadian jurisprudence that gives you ownership of your land that you live on. Instead we get a clumsy dodge. I should have expected as much from the tone of your writing. Hot air and fairytales and nothing more. "Feel free if you must." pffff

Shwa replied to Mr.Canada's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well what do you mean by 'the heart of'? -
Do you own the the land that you live on? If so, show me the articles that give you legal ownership of that land. Please cite Canadian jurisprudence since that differs from that of the US.

Not during hockey season it ain't. -
Ok, so now you have removed all doubt.
-
Then why don't you hussle your butt down to the rez and tell them that? Wait, I know why - because that would take courage which you don't have.

There you have it! Liberals are smarter
Shwa replied to charter.rights's topic in Religion & Politics
And it also depends on one's definition of what is liberal and what is conservative, left wing/right wing. There are plenty of threads here about that and what those terms mean in Canada, which is different from the States, etc. I think most people here on this forum are 'liberals' even though they wouldn't dream of voting for the "Liberal" party. -
You grieve. One of the good things nowadays - BC has provided an example - is that there are well-known stages to grief. This knowledge helps us understand that we will pass through this period of loss and that life indeed goes on. Grief is one of those key aspects of the human emotional life that has had profound effects on history and yet seems to be often ignored or avoided as a cause. Hopefully those in grief have a loving, suppoting family to lean on while they go through the process, but if not there are many support mechanisms in the community including doctors and social agencies.
-
Why should I be angry with a 1 year wait time for an MRI in Ottawa? I am sure there is a triage method to determine who goes first. Besides, as BC has already pointed out, Watertown, NY is a couple of hours drive south from Ottawa. Why wait? Go to Watertown. However, I find it interesting that Harris actually "did something." Did he make the MRI wait times in Ottawa spectacular or were they just as sh*tty?

Yes you would. Especially if this most popular hockey bar is located in the heart of Trinity-Spadina, which is the riding of your NDP MP wife Olivia Chow. I mean, gold medal game, where else would you go? I surmise the camera was parked directly underneath or above the actual screen showing the game so it could capture the faces of the crowd during the game and expecially when Canada scored. Similar to how the camera was set up in Kandahar. They do this all the time. If our humble Father, Sir Stephen Harper the Good, wasn't comfortable with publicity, he should have not been the guest of the actual Wayne Gretzky during the game in a private box. Then again, he certainly couldn't risk sitting in the cheap seats ($1000.00 + per seat!) with the mass of unwashed and maple leaf bedecked regular fans. Too low brow and someone might "assault" his perfect hair. At any rate, now that the Hyperbole of the Week has been cleared away, it is interesting to note that Harper was with the Great One; Layton was at the Great One's Great Bar, but where was Ignatieff during this momentous sporting occasion? Probably in the library of the Canadian Club researching Canadian colloquialisms to be able to seem more Canadian in the next Canadian election. Meh. Wayne Gretzky for PM! -

Don't you ever talk about your father like that! Get to your room. No dessert for you! -
You mean like the treaties right?
