But in any example you use, technology has only resulted in more politicians and bureacrats. Their form might have changed a little bit here and there, but the content has been the same for millennia. In fact, some might argue that politics (and politicians) are an inherent part of human nature. Now if technology and science can administer social policy, please, do tell.

Civilization v. Savagery - From Middle East to Europe and Back Again
Shwa replied to jbg's topic in The Rest of the World
Oh is this another attempt at the artful dodge? No, it's still another pretty clumsy retraction - but a retraction nonetheless. You have already been caught by your own hasty generalization, now what's this? An appeal to ridicule? Except your 'bulk of' argument doesn't fly because you haven't even come close to addressing those people or groups working for change within those regimes. Or did you forget the violent protests at the recent Iranian presidential elections? Your viewpoint is at best simplistic and simple minded. I suppose that you are going to tell us that "purple's a fruit" too? Awwww, you're hurting the feelings of a screen name on some Internet forum. Such a big man you are! -
Then maybe you ought to since many of the futurist ideas you come up with have already been worked over. You're kidding me right? Ah, so you are saying automation is the answer to our dreams? Everything in an automobile plant is completely monitored including the staff that run the machines. And yet on and on it goes. You are not the first to decry the present state of things. For more information read, 'Revelations' The Bible, God, 4000 BC. However, the chief flaw you have here is that the "system" you decry has science as one of it's chief components. The atom bomb, for example, didn't just appear out of thin air. Perhaps there needs to be a total collapse of your current thinking before you start questioning the validity of your ideas. Have you ever thought of that? You're a radical, I can respect that, but a radical that makes assertions about science ought to subject his own ideas to the "scientific method" and it doesn't appear you have done this. I, on the other hand, am not compelled by this ethic, thus I can have some fun with your ideas. Thanks, much appreciated.

Read it again. This time with a bit of understanding. So as long as it is scientific totalitarianism, it is OK, or are you referring to something like Vulcan from Star Trek? You little Spock you. When the scientific method can be used to solve moral problems, let me know. Are you talking robots and stuff? Read 'I, Robot' Asimov, 1950 or, even better, watch 'Blade Runner' Scott, 1982. Because if you are saying that we don't need to monitor the humans, but just "production, transportation" which are inherently human activities, I think your sort of logic not only gives robots headaches, but has been successfully used by Captain Kirk to form moral dilemmas in machines that freak the machines right out. See Star Trek's 'The Changling' Roddenberry, 1967, esp. the machine 'Nomad.' Enjoy.

Yeah, surprising after last year's performance, but I am sure Laval was well prepared for Glavic.

But of course, someone who make sweeping generalizations about millions is not living a "black and white world." As if. All you are doing here is trying to backtrack like a clumsy dodger. Nice try, but it didn't work, you just dug yourself in deeper. So at least you admitting to the simple minded generalization that is subject to ridicule so often. Oh wait, you weren't generalizing about everyone, just the "bulk of" them all. And you trying the old appeal to popularity schtick by saying "anyone." Seriously, did you even make it out of grade 10? Yet? In other words, there is that fixation of yours again. That's it? That's all you can bring? First you say you are not black and white, but generalize your rules anyway. Then you admit that there are exceptions to your general rules. And then you try to rationalize your exception with a single article from the {gag} National Post on a nothing story? I can see why Jack has termed you the Big Giant Head. For comic relief obviously. -
Yep, they modelled their football program like a US college and dominance follows. Some people whine about this, I see kids playing their favourite sport while staying in school. Ontario has had the open door for athletic scholarships for a few years now, but maintain that stiff upper lip tradition. When you get killed in the cold like the Dinos did, I suppose a stiff upper lip comes in handy. Congrats to Laval. Again.

Technocracy, eh? For more on this technology-first, politicians-second idea please see '1984' by George Orwell. PS - luckily since you live in a liberal democracy you are able to access and read 1984. Please take note of this irony. Thank you.

If this is the case, then it is my duty as a Canadian to make a suggestion: take the head off the beast and avoid the swinging tail until the beast is dead. Most North Koreans understand the analogy of killing the dragon. What this means is toss a few selective smart cruise missiles here: Satellites uncover North Korea No tennis or beer for you Kim and company. No TV either. We can talk about a million man army, but if it is blind and without direction, they simply become a million farmers going back to feed their people like they should have done decades ago. While I don't suggest we underestimate the NK armed forces, let them deal with a regime change. Or better yet, once their elite has been decimated, let the Chinese deal with the regime change, they are experts in that sort of thing. This isn't 50 years ago nor is this Afghanistan. I am not talking about a cake walk either. But NK simply lacks the ability to compete they are just unaware of it. Taking a big slice out of their military elite might give them an opportunity to re-evaluate their position 'cause I am sure that barely surviving in the hills is a whole lot different than a pool and tennis court in the backyard.

Your righteous indignation don't mean a damn thing. You were easily bested by a smart young woman and it had nothing to do with liberalism, Black Friday shoppers or 1776. Now, make like a good boy, sit up and shake a paw...

So Quebec will field a mens provincial hockey team to play in the Quebec Cup tournament next August. Of course, the other teams will be France, Switzerland and Italy. Not really world hockey powerhouses. Well maybe Switzerland is OK. But fielding NHL pros against France? Quebec gets go-ahead for separate international team Big deal? Yeah, let's make a distinction we can recognize, even though QC teams have been playing internationally for decades. What's the catch?

Simply brilliant reply!! Mr. Oleg, sir? You've just been pwned.

Then by all means, let's not construct any straw-man arguments, isn't that right Argus? So le't be specific and see what sort of language you are using to construct your non-straw-man argument and see how well is stands up to a simple test. No, but how short of "bloodthirsty killers" is, and I quote: "...a willingness to accept brutality, ignorance and violence...?" The only thing missing is the killing and there is no doubt that your phrase is suggesting this end. Coupled with the use of the phrase, "...the problem with Muslims..." also suggests 'all Muslims' and no on can be blamed for thinking otherwise. You even go as far as to pinpoint which Muslims, "those from the middle east area." No, the problem with Muslims, particularly those from the middle east area is a deep, all encompassing faith and belief in the literal words of the Koran, and a willingness to accept brutality, ignorance and violence in the name of Allah. they might not do it themselves, but if their government executes people for being gay, or stones women for having sex outside marriage, well, they're not all that upset by it, that's for sure. "Not all that upset." Well, either they are or they are not, and if some of them are upset, then so much for your all encompassing argument which then falls into contradiction. Secondly, there is no way that you can prove that all Muslims in "the middle east area" have "a willingness to accept brutality, ignorance and violence in the name of Allah." Or have you forgotten Turkey, you know that 99.8% Muslim country with the parliamentary democracy? Or is Turkey somehow exempt from your argument? Not middle eastern enough or not quite the 'right' kind of Muslim to count? And, of course, here you make another assertion that only a God could possibly know. Really, and in Turkey also? Come off it Argus, you are discounting that there are individuals and groups - even in the most non-secular of countries - that are not working toward moderation, diplomacy or peaceful solutions. And I am betting the thought that there could be these types of people didn't even occur to you in the least. So while it might be a technical or semantic matter of "bloodthirsty killers" as a strawman there is no doubt that at least one person is portraying Muslims as "brutal, ignorant and violent." So Jack wasn't too far off, if he was off at all. -
When I was in school in QC way back in the day, it was almost given that the English schools would not only win the provincial championship, but by 5 or more touchdowns. The only real good games were between the two local English high schools and whoever won those games was usually the provincial champ. However, that has changed quite a bit over the past decades. St. Leonard for instance, despite their blowup this season, have dominated the OFC for years now. Man, things have changed and think it is awesome that the FR kids have not only caught up, but surpassed. I watched some Laval games and they play a textbook Canadian ball game. Fun to watch. But I would never have guessed that more kids are playing football in QC than hockey. Sacre-bleu!

Actually, Brennan did graduate and with a pile of NCAA football records to his credit. The guy is designed for the Canadian game and yet languishes after being cut by both the Skins and the Raiders. Actually he languishes in a Hawaii hospital after being in a serious car accident there last week. I really am baffled by this. This kid is another Tom Wilkinson and if I was a CFL GM I would go out and get him. Surely a starting role in the CFL has to be more worthwhile than a late cut by an NFL team or something in the UFL.

Colt Brennan headed for the Green and Gold. That is the rumour I am starting. Argos can have Ricky Ray, don't get me started on that!

Expo schmexpo this is hockey, it's Quebec, fund it. Give them 200 mil and then ensure you have a Canada wordmark on the sign or something. Bring back the Nordiques! Heck give Edmonton 200 mil so they can have a hockey team too!

Natives have right too says Canada

Enough to sustain a typical household. Poaching, by definition, is an illegal activity. Treaty rights to hunting and fishing are not. Maybe if you had a better command of English or French, it would be helpful in obtaining replies from government officials. Since we are talking about Constitutional and Indian Treaty rights in Canada, "anywhere in the world" is ultimately irrelevant. However, if you want to get argumentative, see Exclusive Economic Zone for the Japan. -

That is an interesting question. In Ontario there is a program - originally designed to transition workers out of the traditional manufacturing sectors - called Second Career. Unfortunately the province really bungled the handling of the program by making the qualifications too wide in order to get people to access it. They mistook the time it took for word of the program to seep into the population for a lack of interest. So they opened it up for practically anyone. And practically 'anyone' took advantage of it. $13,000? Second Career would have fully paid for your upgrade, paid living allowances, transportation costs, books and course materials, etc. Hopefully BC has something similar to offer to you without the money pit Second Career has become in Ontario.
