  1. The University of Florida decided to cut it's Computer Science program, to save $1.4 million.

In a completely unrelated development, the University of Florida has raised the budget of its athletics program by $2 million, to nearly $100 million.

That was no doubt an astute decision for the students of that school. After all, this computers stuff is likely just a fad. In a few decades, the idea of a computer science departments will be as amusing as a hula-hoop department or a pet rock department. Increasing funding for football would allow the university to maintain the high standards for tailgate parties and hot cheerleaders that today's university students demand.

But in a typical show of cowardice, the university backed down.

"blah blah blah, misunderstanding. blah blah blah, financially difficult times, blah blah productive blah blah optimistic. blah blah blah, new proposal. blah blah consultation blah blah industry partners, etc, blah blah blah."

    -UF president Bernie Mechen.

Sad...isn't it,kimmy?....I'm a huge football fan, but,it seems those in control simply see the "cashola" instead of the bigger picture?...

  2. And as a result, the outcome of the poll must be taken very lightly. The answers aren't really all that serious, because most people aren't even considering such things.

On specific things,I agree, these polls are generally meaningless...

As a general guage of the mood of the electorate towards a sitting government, they're a fairly decent barometer...

But,dips in popularity for any government in the middle of a long term mandate are also commonplace...

  3. The Star and their reporter knew full well what Ford's reaction would be in advance of the reporter showing up. Regardless of the parkland purchase angle, they knew they would get a story simply from the anticipated interaction between the reporter and Ford.

If what you say is correct then....

The dufus fell for it hook,line,and,sinker...

  4. Looked it up. In the past 10 season the Jays have finished above .500 6 times. Their worst season was 2004 where they finished with 94 Ls. That was also the year the Yanks and Sawks met in the ALCS.

You can call them Mediocre but shitty is not what I'd call it.

    Who cares???

Bring on the 20th anniversary tributes!!!

  5. The Orioles have been bad for awhile. The Royals have been consistently crappy. Up until recently the Tigers have been bad, so have the Indians. The AL Central rotates it's shitty a bit more than the AL East does.

Well...The AL East rotates its shitty bottom 3 at least...

  6. That's the thing. Getting to play the Royals 20 times a year does wonders on a team's record.

But with Baltimore playing excellent this year and the fact Tampa is in the running, the Jays don't really have any excuses this season.

I will say this about the Jays. I can't think of a really horrible move Anthopolis has made in his tenure. This team probably isn't a playoff team this year but they're easily on an upwards trajectory.

    Here's the thing...

The Blue Jays have been playing patsies like Baltimore for the last 10 years,also...The Orioles haven't had a winning season since the last time they were in the play offs...

    That was....

    wait for it.......

    1997!!!

Does anyone think the Orioles are going to be there in the end???

(I hasten to remind you that Toronto has only won 1 out of 6 meetings with Baltimore this year!!!)

The last paragraph I agree with...The problem is that Toronto, when the chips are down at the end of July, won't be able to go out and get anybody of real value.I don't think Chicago is going to even be close enough by that time, but, barring injury,ya' wanna bet Aprils AL pitcher of the month,Jake Peavy, ends up in New York,Boston,Texas etc???

How much ya' think that type of trade at the deadline fetches out of any of those teams farm systems???

  7. Sure , what good will that do. Have the Sox done anything since the last win....single WS win that is?

Attendance, Sox beat Jays, avg of 35,000 per year...NOT per game. Wow!

Record-10 yrs, Sox beat Jays, 3.5 more wins per season.

Good thing Sox are in the Central Div , otherwise those numbers wouldnt be switched, they would be decimated.

Maybe...Or maybe Jerry Reinsdorf would actually have to spend money wisely...If I'm not mistaken,The White Sox have close to the same payroll as Toronto does this year??

When was the single Chicago White Sox World Series Victory,by the way???

Unless you think 2005 was the only 'Series they've won??

  8. The Cubs have sold out forever, they party hard there, great place to watch the Cubbies lose.

The White Sox have a good stadium? When did that happen? The times I've been, it was an empty souless cavern.

I miss the original Comiskey Park...

Did you know that the closest seat to home plate in the upper deck at the new Comiskey Park is farther away than the last seat in the upper deck behind home plate in the old ballpark??

And please don't tell me the Rogers Centre has better sightlines than Comiskey II...

Having said that, many (not all...I like the Cubs too) Cubs fans tend to be either "place" fans or more interested in a party (nothing wrong with that)...Most White Sox fans are hardcore baseball fans....And The Cubs haven't sold out forever...That only happened when they started to be seen regularily on WGN...

  9. memories of world series wins arent too bad. Chicago of course remembers theirs, hell one since 1917 is easy vs the last 3 year defending World Series Champs?

Chicago ever lead the league in attendance? ....or just futility?

Sox will always have history, a good stadium (prefer Cubbies)opver TO.

Anyone looking to have a team would take TO over ChSox in a heartbeat.

    Maybe...

Wanna compare wins/losses over the last decade???

    Attendance??

    More 20 years memories...

  10. Well the Jays just put up 11 runs on the top team in the AL. Yeah they're average.

So you don't see the promise in this team? If you don't, I doubt you've watched them.

The past 20 years where they've been perpetually mediocre is irrelevant this season and going forward.

Had they played in a division like the AL Central they'd probably have several playoff births though.

The Blue Jays are going to finish somewhere between 10 games over or 10 games under by the end of the season...

Too many "what if's"...Just like The White Sox...

But,by all means, keep those memories alive...You're gonna need 'em!!!

  11. They're 14-11, that's 3 games above .500.

Your Chisox are 12-11 in that shitty division.

    So :P

Both are around .500 with many of the same opponents...

    20 years and counting kiddo....

Keep the memories alive...They're all you're going to have for a long time...

    :P:lol::lol:

  12. 11-5 win in the rubber match against the Rangers at home today.

They've won every series they've played this except against teams named Rays and Orioles. Alas those are the teams they need to beat to make the playoffs.

Welcome to the world of .500 baseball....

  13. Personally, I think Khadr has it in for Westerners big time and that includes Canada for not having bailed him out of Guantanamo. So in terms of my own and my family's personal security, I feel less threatened by Black's return than Khadr's. In terms of the chances I become a victim of potential future white collar crime perpetrated by Black, no worries. I'm no longer an investor and don't intend to be. Plus he's getting old and his wife probably has enough money to fund their retirement. All in all, I know who I don't want moving in next door.

I think a traitor who shunned this country is still a traitor...

One's an Islamofascist...The other a self important buffoon who seems to be a Canadian of convenience...

    Neither deserve citzenship at all...

  14. I SO do not agree with Steve Harper on this one.... Mulcair is much more of a Joseph Stalin type.. Except where Joseph Stalin pushed the line on communism with no regard for his own people, Mulcair JUMPS over that line and takes the batton to the next level! Not even Jack Layton managed to push the lines of communism to this level, And in such a short period of time!

    :blink::rolleyes:

    Erm...yeah...

I this you Glenn Beck impression???

I suppose, using that sophomoric level of logic,Stephen Harper MUST be setting up concentration camps to intern those that aren't true believers in Conservative Party "right-minded" thinking...

Oh look!!!I see brigades of the Harper Youth goosestepping down the street!!!

  15. The government COULD operate that way if they wanted to, but they arent set up well to do that right now. They dont have the infrastructure to provide loans directly to 30 million people although they do have various vehicles to put money directly into businesses.

Basically our system is outdated, and it was designed before the IT age. Banks were necessary back then because someone needed to track the reputation and balance of trade of loan applicants to make sure that the newly created money went to people that actually were going to make good use out of it. When the system was designed (or when it "emerged" I should say) the administration of payment collection was also a manual process that required physical bank branches in each little town so that people could show up and make payments apply for loans.

These activities are obsolete now, and could be done for almost nothing with computers software. Private firms like equifax will track credit worthiness for next to nothing... 30 bux per request or less. And balance of trade is already tracked by the government anyways (the bank gets this information by asking for your last few income tax returns).

So we have antiquated institutions siphoned a huge ammount of money out of the economy that could otherwise be spent producing and consuming goods and services, and they provide almost nothing of value in return.

Theres absolutely no reason why we couldnt do this differently, but as things sit now, the BOC is the most capable vehicle to infuse money into the system, either by dumping cash into it, or by easing rates.

Its a great question though, and something we should definately contemplate.

    Indeed...

In fact,The Bank of Canada WAS the vehicle to infuse money into the economy unitl the early '70's...

Much of our 2nd World War effort...Major public works projects like the St.Laurence Seaway...Were all funded out of the BoC.This allowed us to be reasonably debt free for a very long time...

  16. Propping up failed enterprises is a mistake but in the case of the auto companies there are plenty of suppliers who are not 'failed enterprises'. If I was in charge I would have let GM and Chrysler fail and use the money to encourage the surviving firms to expand their operations in Canada.

    "Failed" is debateable...

My point was that you seem to have alot of compassion for the Apocolyptic scenario for businesses in that period but none for the Apocolyptic scenario for the economy if the auto companies had gone under...

    Interesting...If not incongruous....

  17. Ah yes. There are over a million businesses in Canada. A few tens of thousand of them going under is not going to hurt the banks a lot but it would hurt the larger economy.

The money was not free either. The banks gave up their best assets in return for that cash. It was more like a home equity loan than a subsidy.

    Interesting

So does your compassion for the economy at large extend to the auto bailouts??

The only difference in the scenario is that the gov't decided not to use the banks as the middle man...
