I suggest, the OP is generally correct although not nice to think about, and some of you who disagree with it don't understand liberalism, and are actually not as liberal as you think you are...

I think the answer lies in taking a truly unbiased look at history, realizing that savage violence exists amongst all peoples at various times, and how this has lead to deep-seated resentment. And how finally, the response to this is irrational violence against otherwise innocent persons, la 9-11. Or irrational posts. Thus as long as we ignore the truth of who we really are, we all descend from civilization to barbarism. It can happen again, in the wink of an eye.

Liberalism is in decline now. for these very reasons. Eventually it must fail. Liberalism is not a panacea solution for our society, it creates moral dilemmas of its own So for this reason people are increasingly turning away from it. Liberalism leads to the eventual disintegration of society, through moral decay and loss of values, loss of culture. The family unit needs to have structure, morals and rules. Children are naive and need to be taught the difference between right and wrong, at a fundamental level. Then they can grow up to be adults and make their own, wiser choices. But without limits, anything goes, they grow up to be failures if they even grow up at all. It's not a question of whether we should be liberal, or conservative. Conservatism taken to its ultimate end also must eventually fail. And suffice it to say, despite my generally conservative leanings I would rather live an an ultra-liberal society, than an ultra-conservative one. But in either case it's the extremes that fail, and we humans must learn to walk that middle road. To make judgements and balance decisions on a case-by-case basis, not by dogmatic attachment to ideals. That's where the great struggle is, and has ever been thus.

Prop. 19 in California goes down
Sir Bandelot replied to Pliny's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
But the reality is, without the cat and mouse game, it's all inthe hands of criminals. By the same "toke-n", your logic says that people prefer to do whats legal. So they'll prefer to get their weed from legal sources. In contrast, not too many get their booze from the black market. Judging by the lineups at the liquor store around here. And one other thing. "harmless"? Tobacco is not even close to harmless. Marijuana is not as carcinogenic as cigarettes, if it is at all. And there is research to substantiate this. -

I just donated money to the Liberal Party of Canada

Why? So he can turn Canada into a veritable police state? And this is the kind of guy he needs to help him do it. Mr. Harper is a full-fledged politician, and therefore will say nothing. -

Yeah but what about the "gateway theory". If teenagers see that pot is now legal, and it used to be illegal therefor the state was wrond in criminalizing this drug. So it follows, it mught be wrong to criminalize heroin too. Maybe heroin is not as bad as they say it is... -

I do not agree with this because, whites are also racist among themselves. We also hate wops, krauts, micks, spicks, frogs, etc. Hmm, sounds pretty racist... "Ok then, I'll go get a job." -

Real Change: Brought to you by Republicans
Sir Bandelot replied to Shady's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
The onlything that is the voters fault is their continued belief that voting for any major political party is going to do some actual good. A few more electrions like this and people will finally start to see the light. Then their next move will be to change the name of the party, to give a sense that there is a real alternative choice. But this game won't go on forever -
What can you do to stop racism?
Sir Bandelot replied to charter.rights's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Let's say for the moment that it is racist to ask someone where they are from. But now let's ask, why is that a wrong thing. Why should "racism" be wrong at all, if the knowledge or interest in another persons race is not used to disadvantage them in any way. What's wrong with talking about race? Here in Canada, we believe that people of different races can all live together and learn to be tolerant, even learn about each others races, or more specifically, about their cultures. We need to put away this sense that talking about race is something repugnant. Keeping something hidden, or forbidding certain conversations doesn't solve anything, it only makes it worse. So I say, away with these wimpish neo-liberals and their fear of words, or any idea that implies there's a substantial difference between you and me. Away with these mind numbing forced equalization programs. This de-humanizing political correctness. What's wrong with knowing that someone is from another country like Ghana, or anywhere else, so that we might understand better what people are like. That's just natural human curiosity. Otherwise why don't we all just walk around with paper bags over our heads, and change our names into numbers. Then we're all equal, obedient uncurious faceless slave drones, working for the bylaws of multinational corporations. -
Ergo, there is only one move that we really need to learn in all of martial arts, my students. A swift kick in the jimmies, then run like hell...

How is that comparison at all relevant to this discussion on MMA? Were you hitting on the bong again My view is, it matters not if we think it's "unmanly" (although it is). I note it's particularly attractive to weak, inferior types. Mentally and physically. The fact is that it SELLS, SELLS, SELLS.

So what should we do, Mr. Ignatieff?
Sir Bandelot replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Many a national leader has gone to visit China to make business deals, all the while maintaining absolute silence and avoiding any criticism of a country whose human rights record is among the worst on the planet. This includes past and present Canadian leaders. In the current political mindset, the buck is what matters most. They are willing to prostitute all our values for the sake of trade with the new economic superpower. "This is your first visit to China and this is the first meeting between the Chinese prime minister and a Canadian prime minister in almost five years," Wen said through an interpreter. "Five years is too long for China-Canada relations and that's why there are comments in the media that your visit is one that should have taken place earlier." The rebuke certainly signals that whatever influence Canada aspired to have on China was a mirage. When it first took power, the Harper government criticized China, and rightly so, for its human rights abuses. Harper had suggested concern for human rights was more important than trade and commerce in foreign relations. However, Harper failed to follow up on those tough words and engage the Chinese. Now, emboldened by its increasingly powerful economic influence, China has officially told Harper he isn't ready to preach to anyone. Harper genuflecting before Chinese leaders. Link
