this crowd is in complete denial. Everything was someone else's fault. That's the very essence of conservative accountability.

OK. For the third time now, let me repeat what the study shows. People with low IQ's tend to be conservatives. That does not mean (or imply) what you just said. It's too bad that this scientific study offends some of the conservatives on this board. Clearly, the answer is to vote for Harper again - he's good at making those scientists shut up. I have NO idea wtf you are talking about.

You mean a "majority" government - a majority of seats, not a majority of votes. You're describing party list PR. To my knowledge, nobody has ever seriously proposed its usage in Canada. The NDP supports mixed member proportional (MMP) voting. There are different ways to implement it but they all involve casting 2 votes, one for your local representative and one for your party of choice (you could vote for an NDP representative but the Conservative Party, for example). There are a number of 'top up' seats (usually deployed regionally) that are used to force the end result to be more proportional. I prefer Single Transferable Vote (STV). It involves large, multi-member ridings (7 provides best proportionality but it will work with 5 or even 3). It allows you to vote not only for your party but for the best representative for your party in that riding. Again, you are describing party list PR and to my knowledge, nobody favors this. Both MMP and STV have local MP's. Trudeau likes alternative vote. It doesn't produce proportional results and yes, it would probably favor the Liberals. The bigger centres already have most of the power (as they should because they have most of the people). I don't see a reason why PR would accentuate this )

The NDP and the new international trade agreement
ReeferMadness replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The milk I drink if free of growth hormones and antibiotics. Will Harper assure me this won't change as a result of this dumbass deal? These free trade deals are great for corporations. Whether anything trickles through to people over the long haul is debatable. -
The NDP and the new international trade agreement

Wow. Just argue with yourself and use that to illustrate how dumb the NDP/Greens are. I guess that's one way to win a debate. -
It's so refreshing when people come out and admit that democracy is for sale. Go on out and buy a few buckets of it.

Seems like quite a few of you around here are in denial about the general nature of conservatism (at least in its virulent modern form) and its manifestation in the disgraceful, dishonest and pathetic actions of Mr Harper. That's unfortunate.

It's not "my study" and it doesn't say that. Please read and understand before you comment. Never said that. I've never seen any study that shows a statistical link between intelligence and wealth. If you think there is one, go and find it. Then come back. The study makes no generalization, other than less intelligent people are more likely to be Conservatives. If you are insulted by that, take it up with the study's author.

The study says that people who score low on IQ tests tend to have conservative views. What you've said isn't quite the same thing. Please refrain from twisting my words. Now you're just making stuff up. Please refrain from inventing things and claiming I said them. Seems like you're just hallucinating now.

If I've misquoted the study somehow, you should point it out instead of attacking me. As for greedy, it's been well established that tax cutting overwhelmingly favors the rich and accentuates wealth inequality; and wealth inequality is bad for the economy. Certainly, the wealthy know this; or could know it if they chose to. It's logical that Harper's platitudes make the rich feel OK about their wealth and greed in much the same way that his rationalizations about the niqab make the racists feel OK about their views. Conservatives bring out the worst in people in many ways. If it seems impolite of me to point that out, well, I'm not sorry.

One of the many Harper supporters on this site asked why I thought Harper was evil (though, in fairness, I don't recall ever using that word to describe him). I thought disgrace was a fairer, more accurate and less morally charged word than evil. We could ask the mods to change it, though, if you think evil is more accurate. Anyway, clearly Harper 's government has done so many disgraceful and despicable things that it deserves its own thread. And let's be honest - we've only scratched the surface with this list.

Didn't say that at all. I said this Go argue with the scientists. Or try to shut them up, like the Conservatives try to do.

I know everybody must be thinking "If Harper was really such a pathetic failure, why do so many people plan to vote for him?" That's an excellent question and there isn't just one answer. Some already wealthy people understand that Harper's tax cutting ways will make them even richer. They don't need more money but, hey, they're rich for a reason. There aren't nearly enough of them to elect him, though. There's a reason they call them the 1%. As we've already discussed, Conservative dog-whistle politics have the effect of making racists, homophobes and other xenophobes feel better about themselves. Lots of people are employed in fossil fuel jobs and they worry about their future without Harper there to champion their dirty industry. Lots of people don't pay close attention to politics and Conservatives are especially good at jingoism and other types of cheap politics that play well to the uninformed. Conservatism is statistically associated with low IQ's. Lots of Conservatives just aren't that bright many just haven't figured out that it's against their best interests to elect Conservatives. Sad but true.

Because you find it easier to have Harper run against Chretien or Pierre Trudeau than the current people. Why stop there? Maybe you should just compare John A McDonald against Laurier. I don't spend my time on what Chretien did because he's gone. Get over it. I still see that you are incapable of defending Harper so you need to continue pathetic efforts to blame someone who came before him.

Shooting In Oregon School
ReeferMadness replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
When gun rights are taken to idiotic levels, then every idiot will carry a gun. And then, we'll be safe. -
So, you would rather Harper arranged his policies so that all his failures are somehow related? In a way, they are. They're all related to unintelligent, right wing politics. I know. His list of failures is so huge - who can keep up? And that's just a partial list.

It happens in Canada but not just in Canada. I'm not aware of any country that is immune to the politics of fear and xenophobia. People are innately tribal and distrustful of those perceived to be outsiders. Right wing governments are particularly good at exploiting peoples' tendencies to bigotry. That's because low IQ is statistically related to racism, prejudice and conservative politics.
-
If only Harper's period of disgraceful rule were a piece of fiction. I know it's hard to believe that someone like this could be elected in Canada, much less be Prime Minister. But it's true. And this list of misdeeds is still incomplete. It's so depressing, though, I can't bear to add any more today.

They created the structural deficit and made the debt much worse through ill-advised tax cuts. In particular, the corporate tax cuts resulted only in loading corporations with cash they don't know what to do with. Most of the deficit value was just self-inflicted wounds.

Well, I keep an open mind. Someone recently said in reference to the Conservatives race-baiting politics, that the ends justify the means. So, if someone points to what ends justify racist, environment-destroying, anti-poor, anti-women, anti-Muslim, anti-democratic policies and politics, I'd have to consider it.

I don't blame you for not reading it. It's a pretty depressing record and maybe once Harper is gone, we should all figure out exactly how a guy like this managed to manipulate the system to electing him. We wouldn't want it to happen again.

The other parties are pandering to racists too? Maybe I haven't been following closely enough. Do you have examples.

The end justifies the means. Where have I heard that before? Maybe you can tell us all what it is about the ends that justify pandering to racists.
