Who will Obama choose as a running mate?
peter_puck replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Jeremiah Wright has been played to death. Louis Farrakhan ...... come on Michael Pfleger was a guest speaker at the church! A guest speaker! Obama was not there. Has Obama ever endorsed their views ? NO. It fact he has stated he disagreed with them. This is guilt by association gone to bizzare lengths. McCain would want to stick to the issues because when you play the guilt by association game, his connections to Bush are a bigger liability than what some guest speaker said in a church on some day he wasn't there. (here I mean perceived connections - obviously McCain hates Bush more than I do - I don't wish Bush a "special place in hell") -
It would need a home port. If you are in the Arabian sea, that would have to be Eilat, which like I said is vulnerable. According to the US Navy, its carriers have little or no defense against newer anti-ship rockets. Imagine having your most important military asset floating down a narrow channel were some nut with a rocket could sink it. Look what happened to that ship of Lebanon Not really. Like I said, most of Iran's good stuff is underground. It would take more than one carrier strike to take it out for good. It would only take one member of the Iranian military to fly his plane into the Kitty Hawk to sink or disable it. This is what I would be worried about (I could not find a better copy, but someone posted it in a forum http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zerothre...;postid=7287568 A carrier would not do it. Israel has almost no navy (they have little need for one). They would have to develop naval expertise (they would have no clue about carrier warfare. They would need to modify or buy aircraft to fly on it. They would need to buy support ships. It would be a country of about 8 million people supporting a super carrier. China is approaching a billion people and does not have an operating aircraft carrier. The billions it would cost for the Kitty Hawk would probably be better spent on drone aircraft and missile defense.

Tories new attack ads on carbon tax
peter_puck replied to myata's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Lets extend the logic to the summer warming hypothesis that we see on the weather channel. It is a lot cooler today than yesterday. In fact, weeks of "summer warming" have been wiped out it a single day! Good to know that this summer warming crap has been debunked, cause now I can sell my airconditioner! What you are relying on is a statistical lie. Everyone says about "10 years ago" because that was one of the hottest years on record. The fact is that the last ten years have been very hot by historical standards. I could pick the coldest year of the 80's and point to you a dramatic increase in temperatures. Given the right set of dates, you can show anything. To put it another way, is Nortel as successful company as measured by share price ? I can give you any answer you want. If you say it is a disaster, I will show you the stock price at its lowest and the stock price today, and wow, dramatic growth!. On the other hand, if you say it is doing really well, then I would show you the peak value and the value today and it would be a disaster. I can make the stock "hot" or "cold" by choosing the dates. What you are doing by using the 10 year figure is to pick the two dates that best suit your hypothesis. In doing so, you are misunderstanding the theory. Global warming theory does not claim to be able to predict what the termperature will be next year. Other events (volcanoes/ El Nino's/ forest fires/butterflys fapping their wings on a beach in Brazil and other random events) have a much greater impact of climate in the short term. What Global warming theory states is that the temperature will get slowly hotter over a long time period. If you take the average of the last 10 years where you claim global warming has been debunked, you will find that on average it is one hotest decades in recorded history. That supports GW. -
I don't think that works. You would have too many people people saying false stuff on there. I know people who would put in their ex husband/wife in their. You would probably have to follow the same rules as credit bureaus, which requires a lot of overhead and stuff. Besides, the really good bad tenants use fake id and stuff. I knew a guy who thought he could sue the tenant who trashed his house because he verified the tenant had a good job and good credit. It turns out the guy he sued was his tenant's former landlord. Cops don't care one little bit about the whole thing. Now he spends his days looking at his credit report for signs the tenant took out a credit card in his name. Bottom line is don't be a landlord, its stacked against you.

General Motors closing truck plant
peter_puck replied to Topaz's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I know lots of workers at big three plants. GM workers are paid a lot more in wages and benefits than workers Honda. In addition, they their jobs are more secure than many tenured university professors. It is hard to fire them no matter what the do. Some examples. Guy punches his supervisor in the face (among other things) gets his job back Guy hangs his supervisor over the side of a factory - gets his job back (supervisor quits) Guy who is supposed to be watching an automated machine is found passed out drunk, he gets his full pay while in rehab (the dammage to the machine and lost production was over 100k Guy smashes a co-worker in the face with a hammer for refusing to repair something for him on company time -gets his job back Guy phones in sick day after day, presenting doctors notes. Company calls to confirm one of the notes and the sick guy answers his doctors phone while working on the line - gets his job back Cops set up a ride program stop outside a local big three auto plant at closing time because of accidents caused by people leaving the factory drunk Chrysler paid benefits to an employee who was injured at work because WSIB refused to (because he was high on drugs and horsing around when he got hurt) One Ford factory worked under the honor system - no one had to clock in. Many people with non-line jobs spent most of their shift at the bar (they just came back to check in with their supervisors) (the honor system was cancelled shortly after the RIDE program set up shop outside the plant) One local big three plant use to spend a small fortune paying to fix holes that employees kept cutting in the fense to make it to the bar without having to go through security. Lots of equipment left this way as well. Nobody lost their job over it. Guy arrested for selling drugs IN the factory, keeps his job. Guy caught stealing TWICE, keeps his job after a 3 month suspension (they caught him the second time a few days after the first. Some factories in the states have had to close during major sports events because not enough workers woulds show up. In another factory, there are employees that spend most of their day watching cable television because of work rules. The union made the company build a lounge for them because they were so bored not working. I could go on and on. Most autoworkers are serious and hard working, but the fact that it is really difficult to fire someone who is not with the program. In most cases, they get a couple months off WITH PAY, and then come back. How do you expect one of these plants to compete with Honda ?? -
General Motors closing truck plant

Fact - "Big oil" does not control the oil prices, the guy driving the Hummer and the guy in China do Fact - "Scrap organic waste" is not going to produce enough energy to fuel much of our vehicle fleet (although it is noble idea) Fact - other sources of ethanol need about as much fossil fuels to create them as they save. (this is true of the West, there our sugar cane in the tropics produces net energy) -

I suppose you could say the same thing about guns. -
It would be ALOT harderthan Entebbe (is that spelled correct?). Entebbe was a single target and they had the element of suprise, and they had a very poorly armed opponent. In this case, they have multiple targets and Iran is well prepared for them. They have spent a lot of that oil money on modern air defenses. Iran has learned from the bombing of Iraq in the 80's. All their nuclear stuff is scattered or burried.
-
I really don't think that would be a good idea. First of all, you would either have to base it at Eilat where it would be really vulnable (it is a few miles from both Egypt and Saudi Arabia and has to pass through a channel between the two) or in the west where you would require Egypts permission to squeeze it through the cannel. In addition, if I were Iran, and I were hit by an attack by a carrier, I would through EVERYTHING at that carrier. Even the US did not send its carriers through the straights of Hormuz (SP) without making sure Iran was not going to do anything. Finally, those carriers are supe expensive. Where do you make the cuts ?

I guess it depends on your point of view. If someone came up to me tommorrow and told me that my stinking rotten infidel corpse would be rotting by my mailbox by the end of the week, I would take that as a threat.
-
Probably not. If you look at all the candidates from the major parties, most are just cannon-fodder. The NDP and Liberals do not have a hope of winning a rural seat in Alberta. The Conservatives don't have a prayer in urban riddings in the east. They don't always run the most skilled candidates in those riddings. If they let her run it would have been to keep her out of Biker bars rather than thinking she could win.
-
If this was happening when the Liberals were in power, the Conservatives would be doing exactly the same thing. Politicians are all the same. If you think that yours are better than theirs, you are lying to yourself. My main concern with the Bernier affair is why was this guy given a cabinet post when he was clearly not up to it ? The answer is that Harper needed a cabinet minster from Quebec. I am sure there are plenty of talented western MP's, but Haper had to take the not-so-wise guy from Quebec. The Liberals have done exaclty the same thing in the past (although they were luckier). The Liberals were weak in Alberta so they had to make the MP's there ministers. I think everyone should learn from this mistake and find a way to make sure it does not happen again, rather than competing for sound bites.

BS. Data from satellite (SP) that reported global cooling was reported all over the place about 10 years ago when the anti-AGW people were trying to defend the "were not warming" line. Nobody edited that data (it was later debunked however) -

The main swift boat attack was that he lied about the battles he fought in, thats what did the dammage. After that they would rehash slightly distorted old news like his testimony before congress and the Cambodia thing. Also, although McCain didn't ask for special treatment, he did get it. In the world of Swift Boating, the fact that he got it is enough. The same thing can be said for Kerry - he was a war hero with two or three purple hearts. They got him. -

Why don't you put on your tinfoil hat and join the other believers in scientific conspiracies. Aliens are among us, you can run your car on water, drinking urine is good for you. The truth is out there!!! It shows how truly PATHETIC an argument is when you have to resort to conspiracy theories to defend it. Do you understand the concept of tenure ? If I am a tenured scientists at a university, I cannot be fired unless I rape a child on camera. Can you even point to any evidence of this AGW mafia that "real scientists" are afraid ofh ? US senators threatened to open an investigation into two pro -AGW scientists who appeared on a committee. Bush ORDERED US government scientists not to talk about AGW. NASA concluded that they were presured to downplay AGW by Bush political appointees. Do you have anything close to this ? -

What I describe is very well documented. It is "Switfboating" by the common definition. As for the black babies conspiring....WTF ??????? You are probably right...I don't think the Forrestal is a good choice - which is obvious by the fact that the guy with the link is clearly an amateur. With Kerry they attacked his strong point - his military record. Although you have to be careful, attacking McCain's might be that tactic. Playing his torture confessions, pointing to the special treatment he got from Vietnam. Implying that his high ranking father got him special treatment. Maybe you could have a couple of fellow POWs doing a swiftboat style interview complaining about McCains special treatment while they suffered. Reading parts of his torture-confession. that sort of thing. Of course, it would be very dishonest, but if you could get some vietnam era POW's talking about sell-out it would be his word against their (Kerry had military records to back him up) There is SOME truth to it A) McCain did get better treatment than the other prisoners (because of his fathers rank). His father was very high in the US military in Vietnam (at one point commanded the navy there I believe) C) McCain did make a confessions (after torture). That along with some swift-boater style BS might work. Just so nobody misuderstands, I am just talking about how something could be spun in a swift boater like attack. -

I don't see her from being a second banana either. After this campaign it is clear that she is looking out for her own interests, not her parties (or anyone elses). She would make her decisions based on becoming president in 2012. If I were Obama I would not want her as VP. That would make her one heart beat away from the presidency - it would make you think twice about drinking a cup of coffee she gave you :-) -

I don't think so. McCain has more character than most of the other politicians combined. As for Bill being vetted - he was under constant investigation by a Kenneth Star for what seemed like most of his time in office. He has got to be the most vetted man on earth. -

Years ago she became addicted to perscription pain killers because of a real and painfull physical condition. I hate to break it to you, but Cindy McCain's drug problem with perscription drugs would not rate a federal sentence. A) She was a first time offender It was a long time ago C) She was put on the drugs by a doctor because of severe pain D) Was an outstanding member of the community - not a criminal The fact that it was a politicians wife probably made this go further than it would have otherwise. -

The problem is that facts don't seem to matter in switfboating. Look at the last time McCain faced this. It was South Carolina and he had Bush on the ropes. Bush "supporters" responded with A) Push polls implying that McCain had fathered a black child out of wed lock Flyers distributed in churches that stated McCain was gay, C) email bursts stating that his wife was a drug addict, D) various rumours about his mental health ? Did facts shred these rumours ? NO. McCain's lead over Bush evaporated and Bush went on to win the presidency despite being a ..ah forget it. Did truth shred the "swift boaters" themselves ? No. They were mocked by the well-read, but the well-read are a minority. The one thing going for McCain this time is that guy showed himself to be an utter idiot by claiming the jews and the marxists were involved. I would be awful for a guy like McCain to loose to dirty politics again. -

What is that evidence was based on the a of Osama Bin Laden's telephone ? Bin Laden would find out and switch telephones, maybe just before launching a huge attack (yes, I know Bin Laden probably does not use a phone, but you get my point) What if the information against him came from a CIA agent inside Al Queda ? How long would it take that person to be killed (actually, probably a dam long time as they would get as much torture in as possible before he died) I am sure the judge can understand evidence with Johny Cochrane giving his spin on it. Here is another example. Before taking out Sadam, the US was able to decode Iran's encrypted communication. Iran found out about this (cause Bush is a ubertwit) and now the US (as far as we know) cannot read Irans communications. Now lets say Olga is being tried as a North Korean spy. Should we let the North Koreans know we can read their mail just to convict Olga ?
