Canada's Self-Esteem Issues
I miss Reagan replied to I miss Reagan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I'm shocked! I'm shocked a Toronto Star blogger would defend the CBC. Especially after the article pointed to S. Ontario as the prime anti-American market feeding the CBC's bias. And Global Warming!? WTF? Talk about a Red Herring. "Textbook leftist stuff" here BD, attack the source when you can't refute the substance. I think the fact that you leftists and the Toronto Star so adamantly defend the CBC only further proves what is so obviously true. That the CBC is state-run propeganda machine. I can't help but laugh when I think of Maplesyrup claiming how balanced the CBC is. We all know his point of view. -
Canada's Self-Esteem Issues
I miss Reagan replied to I miss Reagan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Did you read the Fraser article Newf? It seems to support the conversations you and I have had before on this topic. That anti-Americanism is more a product of Southern Ontario rather than regions like the Maritimes and elsewhere. Pretty interesting that it supports our own anecdotal experiences. Read the article and the methodology ya spaz. I know Sweal, for you this is simply unacceptable. Perhaps if you got a job at the CBC you could lobby to work that number down to at least 25% neutral and 75% negative. -
More Religion Needed in Canada
I miss Reagan replied to Ramesh's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
No, I implied no such thing. In fact my best friends are agnostics who have no interest in religion. They are fantastic people, better than many religious types I've come in contact with. People are people. This is what makes me so angry about the intolerant leftists on this web site who judge 'evangelicals' or any other religious group and mock their beliefs. It's incredibly hypocritical and offensive. -
...and because Kerry is from Mass. Being a Senator just gives him to beak off a new excuse every week as to why he really lost. Ya, gotta know before hand though, that running for president is a risky move. If you lose you're destined for obscurity. Poor Mike Dukakis, the last memory we have is the image of him looking like a dork riding in that tank. At least Dole found viagra. Anyway, I just thought the article was interesting considering the Dems often chose to fight Bush on his intelligence.

Once again the experts are pointing out the obvious, that Canada has an inferiority complex when it comes to the US. This time one of those to point it out was a Liberal! Maybe we are entering bizzaro world. I hope everyone got a chance to read what Frank McKenna said last week. Simply, Canadians need to stop being smug and take the chip off their shoulders. He also pointed out that Americans don't take much notice of us, but when they do it usually about Canadian attacks, "endlessly moralizing about what they should be doing differently". That Frank McKenna.... More recently the Fraser Institute published a report proving gross Anti-Americanism in reporting by the CBC. (like we needed scientific proof). News Wire

Come on Black Dog, you think the honorable Iranian government has civil intentions with it's nuclear program? You and Putin Iraq WMD's, sure I was wrong. But allow me the same privilage of qualifying that with the fact that the WMD's they did possess did not just dissappear into thin air. My argument has always been that it wasn't just Bush that was wrong, the whole world was. Bush didn't lie, he just had the same faulty intelligence that the rest of the world had.
-
Thanks for the help Black Dog. Anyway, here's what you said: To which I said: Now, I knew that as soon as the US started getting aggressive with respect to Iran you'd start back peddling. You know darn well that the evidence points to proliferation. I think you're equivocating.
-
Oh Black Dog I wish we had access to that thread! You know what you said. I know your opinions sway with the winds of European opinion at the time, but admit what you said.
-
I simply oppose false and unethical accusations in general. I hate to agree with Argus but he's right. Of any group you seem to be most closely aligned the Liberals, and you obviously loathe the Conservatives. Oddly, true classical liberals or libertarians usually find the most common ground with the conservative parties.

Christian Left exists in Liberal Party
I miss Reagan replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I don't know Black Dog, I think the ND's on the forum and in Canada in general prefer to keep the Cons under the microscope rather than the Libs. This just might be what you are saying that: But wait, if I didn't know any better I'd say this was an admission of bias in the Canadian press!? Black Dog? I've heard differing figures, but I think you're correct for the most part. -
What was that Black Dog?? Did we not have a discussion a couple months ago where I said I needed to save what you were saying about Iran's Nuclear Program because you'd eventually argue that Iran isn't pursuing nuclear weapons!

More Religion Needed in Canada
I miss Reagan replied to Ramesh's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Interesting points Ramesh. Although we have to walk a fine line, I think it would be benefitial to teach kids in school about world religions and how they have benefitted humanity. And I agree, the greens (religious beliefs) kill people every day. They care more about 'the African spotted Vulcher' than they do about 40 million Africans people dieing every year from malaria, dengue fever, sleeping sickness, river blindness, shistosomaisis etc. etc. etc. -
Christian Left exists in Liberal Party

The silence from the left is deafening. So much for Sweal's theory on one party attracting all the Christians . -
Toews: 'Free Vote' on Same Sex Marriage

Sounds pretty normal to me. -
Toews: 'Free Vote' on Same Sex Marriage
I miss Reagan replied to takeanumber's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Who's the jerk on the forum? Sweal are you related to Takeanumber? is there some reason why you're loyal to an obvious bigot? -
I'm not argueing that at all. I'm saying Mulroney was the one who actually got something done. He understood what the Libs and the ND's still don't understand. That pissing in the face of US Presidents does us no good. Trudeau was a terrible diplomat and an expert at burning bridges. It always seems that Libs just want to take any opportunity to piss off the US just to get a little recognition, no matter what the cost. I'm reminded of the quote: "If America was trying to keep the bubonic plague out of its hemisphere, Canadians would import it just to show their independence of American foreign policy" -Barbara Amiel

There's no doubt this is true, but I think you need to be realistic. George Bush nor any other nation's leader will ever personally fight in a war. He was elected to make these difficult decisions. The people weighed his decisions and agreed they were correct. I will give Clinton credit for going to a non-strategic country purely to help out starving people. However, pulling out with out finishing the job gave terrorists a victory and platform to build on. And of course it's quiet now. The people are oppressed by warlords and criminals. There's no one there to protect them. Ya ya you got me there But reaganomics do not necessitate leaving poor people bleeding in the streets. This is my opinion. From my view I see an economy that has consistantly recovering. I see a leader in favor of free trade and opposed to restrictions in trade. I see tax cuts as a huge impotus to this resurgence. And in this day and age of terrorism, I have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Jefferson. Perhaps it's just his contrarian nature, but we've had a few passionate debates where he adamantly defended the Dems against the GOP. Well like I've pointed out before, the political spectrum is circular rather than linear. This just proves my point.

No she doesn't deserve it but you have to keep the deal in order to maintain the integrity of law. Otherwise no one will be forthcoming in plea deals etc. because they have no way to know whether the deal will be honored. It sucks but that's the system. But from what I understand the crown didn't even need to make a deal with Karla to get Paul. According to the investigators they had plenty to nail him with out her testimony. The prosecutors should lose their jobs.

Yes, and we didn't believe it. You slandered her. You gave no indicatation as to what your tone was or what you were implying.

According to the Canadian heads of the Sierra Club and the World Wildlife Federation and even Sheila Copps, Brian Mulroney was the Greenest Prime Minister. Not surprising though, who could forget all the meetings instigated by Mulroney to push for an end to acid rain. And he actually accomplished something! Just goes to show you how far a little common courtesy, towards your neighbor, goes despite differences in opinion. I'd like to see a Jack Layton or Paul Martin make any progress what-so-ever in getting the US to do anything. Beef Ban, case in point. Despite us conservatives being portrayed as tree killers, I think we do a pretty good job at being stewards of the environment. Green PM

Can you articulate the differences between these people? Preferably in terms of their political beliefs and ideas? What policies of Clinton did you like? As far as I can tell, the only real differences between him and Bush are that Clinton is pro-choice, anti-gun-ownership and evidently pro-infidelity. They both like big government and big spending, neither worries about deficits, both believe that government can actually do something about poverty and other social ills (and then, worse, actually try to make it do something), both declared war on a country that hadn't actually done anything to them without the approval of the UN, etc. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I see what you're saying Hugo. Obviously it's relative to where ever you're looking at it from. If you're a Chinese communist, obviously there's little difference between the two parties. Or in your case, an anarchist right? there would be little difference. What I like about Clinton were his center-right economic policies (American perspective). What I really don't like were his policies with respect to the military ie. cutting it by 2/3's and not having a strong resolve in fighting terrorism and being weak in places like Somalia. With respect to his social policies I like his attitude on gun control and more socialized (I hate that word) medicine. He was actually pretty fair on abortion and same sex marriage. His attitude was abortions need to be available but shouldn't be common and I believe he is in favor of civil unions. I could care less about his infidelity, although I don't appreciate the straight faced, lawyer type of lieing and equivocating he would do. With respect to Bush, I think he's dead on with respect to foreign economic policy, taxation and defence. I think he has grown the government a lot, but I see it as nessesary considering the war on terror. The one thing I do hold against Bush is the Southern border and relations with Mexico. I wish he'd sinch the borders and stand up to Fox. And although you put a negative spin on Bush and Clinton, I'm glad you recognize the similarties in policies between Clinton and Bush. The radical left *cough* blackdog *cough* hold these two men to completely different standards.
-
I actually like a lot of Dems like Lieberman, Reid, and even many Clinton policies. What I can't stand are the liberal Dems like Feinnstien, Hilary, Kerry, and Kennedy. A desperate man, losing a debate. It's hard to argue that a lighweight like you can come up with anything other than personal attacks against George Bush.

Good topic August. It seems everyone has brought up valid points to consider. I think everyone on both sides can agree that keeping society safe is important. Does everyone think this is the most important issue with respect to our justice system? It doesn't appear that way because Holmoka isn't an isolated case, it's just in the spotlight. It seems Judges are more concerned with giving the benefit of the doubt to the criminal. Canada's view of crime is that alot of blame lies with society rather than the criminal. (Go figure that thinking in a nanny state like ours where you almost have to try to fall through the air tight safety net.) As usual, taking away accountablity from the individual. How many times do we have to hear about repeat offenders getting out and committing crimes not just one more time but 3 or 4 more times. From drunk drivers to child rapists. And as for murders, I'll never understand how a life sentance equals 25 years. That is not justice.
