  1. I'm not so sure about that. A cheapskate friend of mine HAD a heart transplant and he's STILL a cheapskate.
  2. I always get increasingly beleagured listening to people I "dislike" until I stop listening to them all together. Yet I can listen to people I "disagree" with forever and NEVER get beleagured enough to stop. Are you SURE you disliked Trudeau? I don't think so.
  3. EVERYBODY acknowledges that he is smart, & understands issues, etc. etc.. It's easy to praise someone who you know is an absolutely zero threat. I too laughed my butt off trying to imagine him as "Prime Minister Stephen Harper". Never in a million years, Goldie, never in a million years.
  4. Reading the article "Colliding with Camelot" in today's NP I was amazed to find out that .... (and I quote): "Until just a few years ago, everyone in Massachusetts, including Mr. Kerry, assumed he came from Irish Roman Catholic stock. Then it was discovered his grandfather, Frederick Kerry, was originally Fritz Kohn, a Czech Jew who changed his name and converted. He moved to the United States in 1905 and prospered as a business consultant in Chicago, before going into the shoe business in Massachusetts." Having been born in the Czech Republic, and still having contacts there, I immediately called my most trustworthy contact , Jerry Pokorny, to give me the real scoop on Fritz Kohn. He said: "Ru, my friend, don't quote me on this, but this is what I think transpired. Fritz was a successful shoemaker here, but like many a shoemaker in Czecho back then, he was put out of business by the GSMOAT (Greatest Shoemaker Of All Time), Tomas Bata. So he hightailed it to Austria to ply his trade there. He then saw that Bata was already blowing shoemakers out of the water in Austria too, and so he became disgusted with his fellow Jew, Tomas, renounced his religion and hightailed it to America. There he soon started itching to get back into the business he knew the best, shoes. But the GSMOAT was relentless, and soon after Fritz opened up shop Bata also invaded the US, opening up factories, left, right and center. And so poor Fritz said to himself ... "enough already " fell into despair and commited suicide in 1921. That's what I think happened. But as I said before, Rudyard Sileny (Rudyard the Insane), it's only my opinion so again, please, don't quote me on this! CAPICE?" I trust that Jerry is right. How about you? Ru
  5. Kim wasn't exactly a pig in a poke. She was a brainiac with political experience behind her. Sure she & Belinda are both blonde & female...but Harper & Hitler are both brunette males with odd little hairdos....but I don't think it would be appropriate to compare them strictly for that reason, would it? Maybe a few other reasons...but that's another post. Ru
  6. NO KIDDING. BTW - The only reason Stronach is gaining so much (fake) support is because today every thinking Canadian is realizing that Paul Martin is the best thing that has happened to Canada since Preston Manning and they'll do anything to assure that it is not in any way spoiled by pretty boy Stevie.
  7. I don't know Baron.. That seems like a rather sweeping statement backed up by little fact. To YOU Dief made personal connections, because your mother was his secretary. I'll bet Lester Pearson's staff's family thought he was a great guy...hell...I'll bet that John Turner & Kim Campbell touched a few kids hearts in their summer jobs. And as for Trudeau...I personally revere him as you know...but he was more known for his imperious manner & giving people the finger than discussing their pet's illnesses. Ru
  8. Baron- How can you put down Belinda? My god...she managed to get to the helm of a huge corporation all on her own merit! She CHOSE to be born to that family. VERY smart lady. Ru
  9. - MH - I don't know what gave you the idea that this board was about details but if it is true, this is the only political discussion board on the www that is about details. Most of such boards are about sweeping generalizations with no details (bullshit) and/or about some arcane and irrelevant trivia (e.g. Bush got caught 25 years ago driving while plastered) with no true relevance to the current situation and posted purely for partisan purposes (birdseed). - Since most boards are almost exclusively of the bullshit and birdseed variety, I rarely bother to post on most boards anymore. This board is refreshingly more substantive and civilized (as long as the Rudyards are kept out) than most and does, indeed, provide more detail, context and relevance than most. But I fail to see how some sort of daily diary of Tony Clement's record as health minister or whatever it is you are looking for will accimplish anything much here. It certainly won't change your mind about him or the Harris government or compel you to switch to the PCs from the NDP. So I shall pass on your request. Hope you understand. Hi Unc'... Glad to see that you're hale & hearty & posting. I was a touch worried when you disappeared from Frank. I know you care...so I'll tell you what my opinion is about this wee Canadian fiasco. Paul's da man. I actually think that ( like Demosthenes was hoping for) we've found an honest man. But unfortunately I think that your fellow Ontarians have the collective IQ of the poor chickens we just gassed out here in BC & may not actually notice. I hope they are in a coma & just vote Liberal via muscle spasm, as usual...as for once they will be right! Your bestest friend, Rudyard the Insane
  10. What do you MEAN "if" ? There is no ifs ands or buts about it, Lord ISN'T running. Maplesyrup told us. LOOK! "New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord will not be running for the leadership, CTV has learned. Lord will be making a statement later today." Are you deaf or something?
  11. Dick Clark said of his experiences with musicians: "I met thousands of musicians and none of them could pound salt down a rat hole." Thus to your question: ... "Does Music Shape A Person's Values?" Answer: ... I hope not.
  12. NOW YOU'RE TALKING!
  13. Let the stupid ones be incited by their caretakers into exercise, I have no problem with that....they can horsewhip them if they have to. But, like Scrooge said ... "If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population!" Smart people DO do aerobics! Six hours of powerwalking a week will do it. That doesn't exactly give you "jock" status, but you will be aerobically fit as a fiddle.
  14. I disagree with Galahad. School is not just about developing the brain, school is about preparing children for the rest of their lives. And while I don't expect all kids to be Olympic contenders, I see no reason why every young person cannot live an active life. Wouldn't want our geniuses dying at 45 of a heart attack, would we? Smart people KNOW about the great benefits of aerobic exercize. And the rest? Most will live to 65 just by not overeating and the exercize they get from performing menial jobs. And after retirement I don't see ANY reason why we should worry about whether they live or die. They're quite useless by this time, don't you think?
  15. So what do you want, should children start goose stepping in kindergarten? One goes to school to develop their brain not their brawn. Or do you want your child to be dumb like Hitler Youth, not even knowing when to give up? Show them all the sports and they will naturally pursue the one they have a talent for, but don't force them to participate if they don't. Let them compete with others in their own way, i.e. by using their brain to even the score with the jocks brawn. Did you ever see a jock genius? Didn't think so. Thus I rest my case!
  16. I've never heard of Paul Martin stabbing anyone in the back, Goldie. Please let me in on it, I'm all ears! In return I will quote a passage out of Preston Manning's book "THINK BIG" where he talks about Harper's accusations of him. It'll make your skin crawl, I promise you that. Go ahead! Let's compare! Thanks!
  17. I would too, but he's retired to the Fraser Institute.
  18. Yup Paul is sounding ALOT like he's reading from Preston Manning's book & that's why I'll vote for him this time around. I voted for Preston...liked the book. Voted for poor old Stock, as it looked like he was staying with the book. I'll follow the book wherever it wants to go. The only books Stephen has written are "How to stab your boss in the back by inferring that his wife overspent" and "I'm taking my ball & leaving because you won't do it my way". Kid's books. Not interested. BTW - Guess who once said to his staff in Finance, "Screw the Red Book!"? .... Yup, Paul Martin.
  19. Comparing a game for the leadership of the party to a game for the leadership of the country is like comparing a game of baseball to a game of football. Paraphrasing George Carlin: The objectives of the two games are completely different. In the federal election game, like in football, the object is for the party leader (quarterback) to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use a shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line. In the party leadership game, like in baseball, the object is to go home! And to be safe! So, while Paul Martin was playing a gentle game of baseball and was just wanting to go home, Manley was applying the brutish tactics of football players and boxers. Did you know that some athletes suspect that he even cheated in the 2001 NYC Marathon, mixing up the game of long distance running with some other sport and taking a short cut? Manley's only claim to fame, making him a wee hero for a few hours was that he didn't call the Americans morons. Great statemanship indeed. Considering that the Senate is appointed...it's not really such a bizarre idea is it? He forgot that Canada likes to maintain the pretense that the Senate is one of our chambers of parliament, rather than a retirement home for washed up party hacks, with uncomfortable seats. I can't fault him for lapsing into actual thought for a moment. Actually I was thinking of Don Knotts in his role as Barney, with his one bullet. Which he can never find, nor get out in time to use. Harper's one bullet is that Canadians are dissatisfied with one party ( Liberal) rule. But poor old Stephen just can't even make that one bullet useful. He fumbles, he dithers & by the time he gets the bullet out, everyone has lost interest.
  20. You know, there IS a reason for the media to try to fluff up Stevie Harper. Like they did with Stockwell Day before the last election. Remember? .... He's got the flair of Pierre Trudeau, he's got a photogenic face, he's got a photographic memory, he's got a brilliant mind, he's a sportsman etc.etc. they said. The reason being, then & now, that without them fluffing him up no one would show up for this one sided federal election affair and the newspapers would sit unsold in their stands. Would you watch a Muhammad Ali vs. Don Knots bout if the media didn't fluff up Don? I rest my case!
  21. Whoever wrote this editorial must have been watching Peter Pan just prior to writing it ... while still wishing upon a star. How else can I excuse someone who chooses to disregard the fact that the East still has twice as many votes as the West ?
  22. I haven't noticed the Liberals criticizing him for his firewall fiasco. Why should they be wasting that marvelous bomb at a time when there's hardly anything to gain? Come election time & just in the right time, they'll throw that daisy-cutter right in Mr. Harper's lap, just you wait and see. But that's only if he wins the leadership, which he won't.
  23. This seems like a made-up quote. Hey there.... you accusing me of making up quotes!! Even Mark Steyn knows it was true! In the following article Mark says of Saddam: In his first interrogation at Baghdad Airport, he was asked if he'd like a glass of water, and replied: "If I drink water I will have to urinate and how can I urinate when my people are in bondage?" I don't MAKE UP quotes!! Here's the article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jh.../ixopinion.html
  24. I bet you Greg would be singing a different tune if it was he who were beating the pants off of everybody instead of Siriff. Congrats Siriff!
