Well, if you're talking about Soviets who promoted idea of equality and fought against wealthy elites, then remember that rulers of USSR were exactly such wealthy elites. It was a joke in Soviet time, something like "everybody's equal but there are someones who are more equal than others". It was always a huge distance between Communist elite and ordinary people. What you observe now is the result of reconstruction of Soviet barracks tried by those elites led by Gorbachev. Communist bosses had almost everything except their right to pass the wealth to their heirs. Now they got that. They got everything, the former Communists and KGB officers. And the gap between super rich and very poor got simply wider. Much wider, because those ex-Commies are now not restricted by any so called Communist moral anymore. It was no law in the USSR and there's no law in the Russia's Federation, which is the decendant of USSR.

In order to get Crimea, Russia's going to make Turkey forgetting about this peninsula in the Black Sea. How? By sponsoring the Kurds. Now, think what would war (or liberation?) in areas with Kurdish population would bring to the rest of the world? We're talking about Turkey, Iraq and Iran. US is going to withdraw from Iraq, correct? Then what would happen to it? What would happen to the oil price if the war was nearby of the oil production regions? I'd agree with author, that it would pump the oil prices up. Who would benefit of that? Russia, with it's export oriented oil industry. It's not just about Crimea. You're quite right, who cares about Crimea. But do you care about the Middle East region?

I agree, it depends on terms and conditions. If I hate totalitarian & police state, then sure, you could operate with word "hate" while talking about me. I stand for freedom and progress, no matter where. People first, state last. Russia's joy of gas supply from the South is obviously coming to the end. As an example, new Turkmenistan leadership prefers contracts with China rather than Russia.

Russia's natural gas & oil reserves are already exhausted due to barbaric production for the last 10 years and absence of relevant development of new fields. Mr.Chubays already hinted to reconsider contracts with the West because of the growing gas production decline in Russia and possible interruption of service. Basically, it's almost the only way for the freedom of speech in Russia today: to build really independent website outside of Russia's jurisdiction and share ideas freely then.
