Its official, Trump broke the law
godzilla replied to godzilla's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
you may be right. i'm certainly not up on it enough to say either way... but thats more a process then arguing fact. the Ds rushed things for a reason, because they didn't want to be looking over reaching close to an election. now they have carte blanche to proceed into the election cycle at the insistence of the Senate and Trump impeachment legal team. should be interesting. -

something like 70% of all americans wanted witnesses... even R voters (albeit because they got sold the lie that witnesses would be a good thing for Trump). R's just want this to go away as soon as possible and change the channel... D's certainly aren't going to let that happen. in fact, i'd suggest that D's are the free ones now. the drip drip drip is going to keep going and D's will continue to have investigations that won't go anywhere because they can blame R's that there's nowhere to go... the Senate is not a just environment. and on top of that... Trumps impeachment team argued that the courts were where the fight for information should be. while at the same time Trumps judicial legal teams were arguing that only the Senate could do such things. so now there is going to be a good wind for D's in the courts. -

49-51? thats a one vote ass kicking i guess... hahahaha! and i don't think D's thought for a second that the Senate would do their job. but like i pointed out earlier... the R's are not interested in doing their job in the Senate. there _are_ no good witnesses. R's will wear this... D's have something to say over and over again going into the election cycle. the trial with no witnesses. the trial with jurors that are in bed with the accused. etc. etc. -

looks like Trump will skate shortly and feel even more emboldened to break the law in whatever way he pleases. will we be seeing him having his political opponents and generally anybody else who doesn't think he's a god arrested or just disappear in the night? there appears to be nothing that god Trump can do to sour his support with his base. politically i'd suggest this isn't as good as R's even hope. the House was lost to D's because the electorate wanted checks and balances on Trump... not that he has absolutely no checks and balances? R's might get creamed in the fall because of this. -

its admitted circus messaging by R's:Trump allies see witness-swap scheme as impeachment messaging coup they wouldn't even go through with it as Rue suggests. imagine Joe Biden up there. on every question he would say "i have no idea, but what i can tell you...". a free pulpit for his presidential bid worth millions. i bet the first thing he would say is "i'm here... where's scared tail between his tail Trump!?" -

yeah, it will be like "Mr Biden, what do you know about Donald Trumps phone call with Ukraine?" again, they're not on trial! the believers of the lies need to get that into their thick skulls. if there needs to be an investigation into the Bidens, Schiff or the whistleblower then no one is in a more powerful position than the leader of the free world and the R's... yet without a shred of evidence then no one is willing to risk their careers on a total goose chase and to be called out for it later. they got nothing. what idiots don't understand and whats so dangerous about this whole affair is that the rule of law must prevail! because if it doesn't then democracy itself is in peril. -

Dershowitz attempts to clarify controversial argument about presidential powers the argument that the president can do anything that they believe in the public interest (and i guess since they are one of the public then anything thats good for them) and it can never be illegal, i guess is not going over so well. further to this, i'm sure Trump thought that Ukraine might be corrupt and that makes perfect sense why he tried to leverage that corruption. because he's able to run a corrupt administration but not corrupt the US judiciary, that would take a lot more time and influence. i'm sure he's tried to have the Bidens investigated here but his council just says "theres not a thing to go on, i'm not risking my career for that". remember "lock her up!"? remember what happened to that? there was an investigation and it was quietly wrapped up without charge! no, Trump operates on a currency of his constant lies and those who choose to believe those lies. -

again, as has been stated repeatedly... Trump has obliterated all independence of the Department of Justice, the FBI, the CIA, etc etc... Rs were in control of the House, they are still in control of the Senate. where is the investigation of the Bidens!? where are the subpoenas!? its a total charade, a total story, because they aren't even able to produce one tiny shred of evidence! they aren't even confident enough to start an investigation into the Bidens! -

didn't say he was guilty or not... just that it looks guilty. whats the reason!? theres gotta be a reason. prerogative is not a reason. hiding guilt is a reason. that could be it. thats the only reason you would not want to say. if thats not it then there is another reason. its not "straws" when you employee someone to run your business and they keep all management activities secret from you. this is the whole problem with politics. the general population would never be able to run their own business. they don't see government as a business that they own, which it is. all they do is vote for someone they like. and then its somebody else's fault because they are unable to read a resume or even understand what their business even does and how it works. -

i love the Trump defense team's argument... essentially, "he didn't do it, but if he did, its not an impeachable offence" haahha! i love the "but" in there. -

My question still stands and remains unanswered... What is the justifiable reason for Trump to refuse documentation and witnesses when he's innocent? -

Oh no, they just successively voted in both D and R law makers who did so overwhelmingly and who continue to to support it. Name a Senate or House R who insists on pulling Ukraine support... Can you do it? Is there not one? Not even Donald Trump has advertised letting Ukraine go... You're watching too much Fox opinion TV. -

he didn't "ask" you idiot!! he wasn't asking! he was hanging desperately needed military aide over the head of a small country at war with a large country run by ruthless thugs that the american people already decided that they were going to help! and he doesn't give a fuck about corruption! what other "corruption" issue has Trump pursued during his time in office?! provide one! you can't! -

again... again.... again... you are wrong. the bank robber does not get to blame the cheating bank. thats how the law works. Trump is on trial, not the Bidens. R's have all the power to start investigating the Bidens. they do not do so. now, please address my question that you seem to have no answer for. why does Trump not release the documents? -

no end of chat seems to convince you that they are different matters. if a bank cheats then the bank robber doesn't get to blame the bank. they are different cases. and again, we have R controlled everything except for the House. start the investigations! not happening? funny that... the Ukrainians were told they didn't even have to perform the investigations... just announce them. Sondland: Zelensky Only Had to Announce Biden Investigations, ‘Didn’t Actually Have to Do Them’ in any case, are you arguing that Trump shouldn't be transparent? whats the excuse then? "the Bidens aren't being transparent" is... pretty weak! -

"How can we set up a system which encourages individuals to strive and excel, and yet which shows some compassion to the weak, and weeds out madmen and tyrants?" The equal branches of government are there to protect against the tyrant. "It is the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins." - Ben Franklin -

Then demand the transparency that will show Trump absolutely innocent. If Trump is innocent then he himself is the cause of all of this fuss by not providing the documentation and witnesses that proves it. But of course its just common sense why the guilty attempt to hide their guilt. What strange excuse can you come up with for that? In fact, what is the official reason and the reason promoted by his supporters? Farcically, they make up all kinds of reasons why what happened, happened. But they are unable to provide any even imaginary reason for not supplying supporting documentation and witnesses. -

Bolton account of Ukraine aid could reignite call for impeachment witnesses "former national security adviser John Bolton wrote in an initial draft of his forthcoming book that Trump told him that critical military aid to Ukraine would remain suspended until the country’s government helped with Trump’s desired investigations targeting former Vice President Joe Biden and other Democrats." And there you go... Yet another smoking gun. This might get interesting real fast. -

No, but it a crime to use the public purse and office to make it happen, irrespective of ANY reason according to law. And everybody knew this, everybody was told, lots of knowing participants "talked to the lawyers". Its farcical to imply anything else. Let the lawyers speak! Lets clear this up. But of course there isn't anything to clear up. Its already clear. Trump fucked up again. -

Majority of Americans want witnesses, new testimony in Senate impeachment trial: polls this push by the GOP Senate not to have witnesses is fascinating... as much because its such a difficult box to get out of for the GOP. they don't want to call witnesses because they don't want the WH to again refuse to produce to a GOP led Senate. the old excuses used refusing the House the same don't apply here. and, of course, the WH and GOP don't want those witnesses producing... its only going to be more bad news for Trump. they are all going to say the same thing, that they can't clear Trump of these charges... only further imperil them all. and if the WH refuses the GOP Senate then Trump further imperils the Senate. the GOP Senate will be looking toothless. an unequal branch. imperiling Senate power and democracy itself. and yet it looks bad to the American people that the GOP Senate don't want witnesses. -

there is a date. and Ukraine didn't get all of the assistance because the administration delayed too long.
