Its official, Trump broke the law
godzilla replied to godzilla's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Flynn is probably one of the most interesting characters. because its as if he really does have the goods on Trump. Trump seems to be sweating this one. And its interesting how he can assume unsubstantiated information as reason to pursue his agenda... so that he can blame someone else later i guess as thats seems to be his MO. Donald Trump 'strongly considering full pardon' for Michael Flynn -

what are you even talking about? what a bunch of pseudo medical science arm chair stuff, Rue. come on. look, i get your position. everyones going to get it so... let it go. if you don't agree that we should be attempting to flatten the curve to ensure that the medical system stays intact and that everyone gets the attention they need then thats fine. they can do this in Taiwan and Japan but maybe not here. and current shutdowns are simply trying to blunt the first wave and attempt to exhibit more control on infection rates. Is Taiwan's impressive response to COVID-19 possible in Canada? but i might add that its most interesting the amount of "fear monger" discussion going around and how its directed at "media" or "politicians" or whoever but never at the medical community! they're the ones on tv everyday warning that the medical system will shortly be overrun. i'm not worried as i'm not old enough to be seriously at risk. but i don't want to have our medical system inaccessible for the next year either. or having our economy shut down indefinitely because we can't get people to not take it seriously. like i said, i have family in Japan and its business as usual over there aside from a lot more masks in public. the economy hasn't taken any kind of a hit. we can do the same here but my understanding is that we need to blunt any kind of wave. and the wave is the drastic upwards trend being seen by the medical community. those are the charts with the rockets going straight up! -

Trump is doing well in the polls with this currently. if you go back and read some of the good posts at the very beginning of this thread there was a bunch of good back and forth about how well this could turn out for him if he handled it properly. i'd suggest his floundering on not keeping a strict war footing (like most state governors) is precarious. he seems enthralled by the state of the economy and that if the economy isn't spectacular then his political fortunes are sunk. he needs to give that up. history has provided that "war presidents" do well irrespective of the economy. as also identified, this is a perfect situation for him to further solidify control of power. given how directly he has approached this in the past he is not seizing the opportunity. here nor there as long as he thinks he has the political capital to continue. -

we're at the very beginning of a logarithmic curve, man... check it out, the curve is a rocket going straight up: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ do the math. for every 100M infected there will be 2M dead. its unknown how many will be infected in the first wave. but without immediate severe action then it could easily be 1/4 to 2/3's of the population in the US. 1/3 gives you the 2M dead. i'm not really sure what "fear mongering" people are talking about. -

this article is a must read as it identifies specifically what was discussed earlier in this thread. whether Trump, the authoritarian leader, would take the bull by the horns and run with this opportunity for absolute federal power. Trump Is an Authoritarian Weakman "Coronavirus would be the perfect opportunity for an autocrat. Trump isn’t taking it." "But the stylistic question—how much ability Trump has to tailor his brand of politics to fit new circumstances and meet new demands—may well have been settled decisively in this crisis. The answer is no." i'm proposing that this puts him in a weak position going into the election cycle. it was either all in or not. -

lavish blanket appraisals appropriate for those who prefer dog whistles to informed dialogue. people aren't republicans or democrats... they're people who vote either for republican or democrat candidates. and when properly informed are completely capable of coming to sane decisions that benefit everyone involved. -

Republicans Are Worried Coronavirus Stimulus Bill Is Too Generous to the Unemployed "Lindsey Graham thinks it “incentives” people to lay themselves off, because he has no idea how layoff works." this should be popular with southern rural voters... of course, they'll be watching Fox News so they'll never hear about it. -

i don't use words like that. look, if you want to say that R governors saying stuff like the presidents message is "confusing" or "of no help" or whatever is a clear case of them bonding ideologically with the president then so be it. to use blanket dog whistle words that are designed to blanket all criticism or investigative thought is an entirely different matter. -

the original thoughts of the post still stand... Trump is in hot water. yes, his base may support him no matter what. if grandma and uncle can't breath and can't get a hospital bed and then die then they were killed by a virus manufactured by globalists to destroy the US. but different presidents get elected all the time. its not just about the base showing up on election night or not. there are others who vote back and forth. Trumps re-election has always been on slim ground. he seems to think that his base is all that matters. he's unable to reach out and big tent anything. and when everybody is happy then that probably doesn't matter much. but people are not going to be happy shortly, if not already. -

this is really hilarious... its only fake if they actually didn't say it. its widely reported that they did. On the political right, anger and suspicion over coronavirus precautions "When Deborah Frank Feinen, the mayor of Champaign, Illinois, drafted an emergency powers declaration Thursday to confront the coronavirus pandemic... the next morning, the National Rifle Association had blared a “national alert” saying “anti-gun extremists” were moving “to undermine our firearms freedom.” "Nunes’ Fox News interview Sunday, in which he encouraged Americans “go to a local restaurant, go to your local pub.” "Rev. Rodney Howard-Browne, an evangelical pastor and conspiracy theorist who has prayed with Trump in the White House, encouraged his tightly packed congregation to shake hands, to prove they were not “pansies.” "pastor Guillermo Maldonado, another Trump religious adviser, derided members of his flock who stayed “home in a cave afraid of the virus,” according to The Herald, saying, “If we die, we die for Christ.” you can't make this shit up. -

how is it fake news? so you're saying that Larry Hogan never said those things? 'Pretty confusing’: Hogan criticizes Trump on CNN over coronavirus messaging "When asked about President Donald Trump’s comments Monday, when the president seemingly downplayed the outbreak and suggested Americans in self-isolation would be released within weeks, Hogan said 'some of the messaging is pretty confusing.'" "“Some of the messaging doesn’t match,” Hogan said. “You have the surgeon general [Vice Admiral Jerome Adams] and [National Institute of Allergy and Infection Diseases Director] Anthony Fauci saying things that were almost completely opposite of that yesterday.”" fake news is where they say things happened when they didn't. -

its purely subjective but just seemes to me that there is far less partisan bickering at the moment and politics seems ultra focused on whether the federal and state governments are doing enough or are able to do enough and how long that effort will last. with the two extremes (because it seems that extremes are all that politics is about anymore) being "yes, its going along nicely and we'll be out of it soon" and "no, the worst is yet to come". but the "yes, its going along nicely and we'll be out of it soon" position seems entirely centered on the president and his tendrils while the "no, the worst is yet to come" position is fairly broadly based on the healthcare community and states. and those stresses are fracturing R lines: Red state governors buck Trump and stick with social distancing ""You can’t put a timeframe on saving people’s lives. We’re going to make decisions based on the scientists and the facts," Maryland's Larry Hogan, chairman of the National Governors Association, said on Wednesday." -

this is interesting how currently R's are on the defensive from the medical community. note D's have been fairly quiet really, they only have to differ to the medical community. -

‘I’m all in’: Texas Republican urges Fox News viewers to risk their lives so coronavirus closures end there's real courage for you! R politicians are volunteering the lives of the boomers! carry on! seriously, this gets back to the original thoughts of the thread. Trump seems to be flirting with this concept and ready to sell it hard. his pundits are floating it. will the boomers be on board? ready to run the gauntlet for Trumps economy? -
then it gets paid for over the next 10 years. is it stupid to save for bad times? what if one can't afford abstinence education?
-
seems to be going both ways: "Republicans included a provision for extending an abstinence education program that was set to expire in May as well as a provision that prevents nonprofits from receiving Small Business Administration funding" etc... Coronavirus rescue package stalls after Democrats defeat key vote how about a repeal of the $2.3T Trump tax cut too.... should pay for all of the necessary corporate bailouts. At $2.3 trillion cost, Trump tax cuts leave big gap

i do find the number of infections per 1m people interesting though. if one arranges by worst on that stat: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ and then compares world populations: https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/ then the US is sucking hard. there is no other country with anywhere near the population of the US that is doing so badly. -

universal health care may have no effect with something where there is no treatment. although we may see some social disruption if/when private hospitals and doctors start to refuse patients. or the well off start to get special treatment... etc. its ridiculous to identify this as a topic so early and you know it... the wave is about to hit. lets watch then. -

i'm not playing games with math... it is what it is. i don't suspect that its going to change much because once you have it, then without treatments then you are either dead or not dead. it really plays more into the overall health of a population and not the degree of care they are getting. -

whats your math? US: 512/42163 ~ 0.121 Canada: 23/2035 ~ 0.113 why would mortality rate currently be any different? i don't suspect they are going to be different in the long run. when did this become a Canada vs US thread? we're both doing shitty compared to Japan. but its currently exploding in the US. -

Trump is getting extremely fearful of the economic impact... this should get really interesting. its not like he is really a wartime president. people are not volunteering to go fight an enemy. there could be waves of disease over the next year. what Trump and other governments that have not been able to get a grip on the situation, including Canada, will be asking is that the old and weak volunteer... to die for the economy. i'm not sure any politician will be able to safely navigate that.
