First Nations Issues
Accountability Now replied to TheAboriginalMan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Please show me where my statement about them not paying taxes when living on a reserve is incorrect. I'll wait for your articulate answer... Sure they can. Of course the point I was trying to prove and to which you now agree to is they don't pay taxes when they live on a reserve. Now that wasn't so hard to figure out...was it? No...its not. They buy the vehicle and then sell it second hand. All they have to do is prove that the vehicle was on the reserve at one point which is usually done with a photo. Not ethical but not fraud. However renters do pay it indirectly which is still YOU paying the tax which is paying for the school. How do you not understand how this is different that having the Feds pay using money that you contriubuted nothing to (directly or indirectly). Again...healthcare is subsidized through taxes which again would be something they would be paying for assuming they are working off reserve. I know that Alberta used to require a yearly payment from the individual on top of this whcih was about $200-$300 more per year although they got rid of that a while back. Again...you miss the main point...everyone pays some tax as long as they aren't living on the reserve. Name one tax that people living on the reserve have to pay. -

Portray? Its the reality of the situation. I personally know members of a First Nation reserve that brag about not paying taxes. They even offered to buy my truck for me to save me the GST. So i don't need to portray anything. If they moved to a city then the education and healthcare would be paid for by their local property tax and income taxes like everyone else. If they stay on the reserve, the federal government is paying for it. So yes...there is a difference! When you're tax dollars are paying for it that means YOU are paying for it even if its declared free. Just like our 'free health care' that we pay for through our taxes. Getting it paid for by the federal government truly means that DID NOT pay for it as they never paid the taxes to fund it. -
First Nations Issues

This is truly the sad part as its simply not true. I can't see how either side thought that the treaties would or could last forever. I always believed the British were using the treaties with the ultimate hope of assimilation but that hasn't happened either. Fair enough. I can see how the First Nations wouldn't trust the government but I do think they have an opportunity to set themselves up if they do it right. The kicker is that by doing it right, it would involve some sort of end game which is how the government would sell it on the people of Canada. -

Are you having troubles with the word? The dictionary can be your friend They may get it but the Federal funding only comes when they live on the reserve. -

Yes...that is my understanding I don't understand why they would stay for that either but some do. -

Sorry forgot to add the benefit of not paying taxes while living on reserves. I've heard that one discussed too. -

Honest opinion. I think that the idea of reserves is ludicrous. The intent of reserves was to allow a peaceful coexistance through the treaties however so much has changed since this time. I have often heard of natives on reserves staying there for the 'benefits' like education or health care however those things are often pushed out the door or outweighed by poverty, drugs, alchohol and abuse. Its a catch 22....the goverment dangles the carrott but to get the carrott you have to stay in some of the worst places in the world. Looking from the outside in....I wouldn't do it. (of course that's easy for me to say...I get it). I think that the First Nations need to move on from the 'treaties' and 'reserves' and use whatever leverage they do have with the government to pave a new future for their people. A future which is part of Canada...not separated. I think as long as its an 'us versus them' thing then no one will win. To do this, I think the goverment should divide the treatied land equally and fair among the people of each reserve. At that point, those people become owners of that land for which they can do what they want with it. The reality is there are massive issues with many/most reserves and the governments ability to deal with it properly is limited to throwing money at the reserve which we know won't help. Of course the problem with any solution is that the government is not dealing with one group but instead 100s of groups which don't agree with each other. Makes it tough to have a solution that works across the board. Perhaps, the government should create a buyout or phase out option and allow each nation to decide. -
The Christian church is finally starting to change its ways after seeing what being stuck in the past will do. Even the Pope has come out for the homosexuals as of late. I don't know what will happen in the future and you may be right in that more people will become non-religious however I'm not talking about the future. I'm talking about the current leader who was elected by the current population from which a comment was made that his religous background is a shortcoming. Again...I find that hard to beleive considering 2/3 of the current population share the same basic religion.

I see SmallC cited the article I had read. What other cites are you looking for which make you think that I'm making this personal? It's a fact that he's a very wealthy man of which he's made his money speaking for environmental causes. I don't need to point any further than his statement about having too much to lose to point out his hypocrisy

That's pretty cool. I have to wonder what would happen if the Canadian anthem went out in a US rink? -

The only similarity here is that a lot of doctors go into it for the wrong reason too...money. But they certainly aren't going into it because they think its easy. Ask any resident. -

I never said it was easy. I said a lot of the teachers go into it thinking it's going to be easier than it is and then spend their career complaining about it. Almost all of the ones I know that do this are teachers by default meaning they chose it only because they couldn't get into the profession they wanted. The teachers that are truly teachers get into it knowing it's not easy. -

Unfortunately you see it more in teachers than any other though. A good number enter the profession as a back up plan as it offers great benefits, decent pay and of course summers off. It isn't until they become teachers that some realize it's not as easy as it looks. -

I had really good teachers too but the reality is there are some teachers that don't take the job seriously or understand the demand when they first decide to be a teacher. As such you get some that are jaded which reflects in their work and attitude. -

Shots Fired On Parliament Hill
Accountability Now replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Good link. I have been wondering what this guy's actual motive or plan of attack was after watching the video. If he was intent on a massive killing spree then he had numerous opportunities to do so along his path. There were people on the pedestrian entrance. There was the driver in the Minister's car. There were people along the entrance to Centre Block. I would have assumed he could have done some damage that way if he wanted to. I know nothing about guns so perhaps he knew that he had one or two shots and he was saving them for a notable face. -

You're right. Its the French we should be fearing. Bourque, Lepine, Zehaf-Bibeau, and Rouleau! Add in the FLQ....damn....you're on to something here! I'm being sarcastic about it being the French....in case you can't tell.
