If they had good leadership then they could work some good for the country. However the last debate I saw was one of the worst debates I have ever seen. Absolutely no ideas were circulated, it was only Harper bashing and cheap shots. Nothing was brought up how they wanted to make the country better, only the idea that Harper is an evil "Bush Republican". If a liberal government got in again that would do major damage. Alberta would be up in arms again if the loss was seen as simply a backlash against Alberta, and knowing the Liberals they'll target western Canada in order to gain votes elsewhere as they have for the past 25 years. If Frank Mckenna, Brian Tobin, or John Manley were leading then maybe the story would be different. I think that most Canadian's have given up on being heard, only around 60% even bother to vote. So a government might get a majority with only 20-25% of Canadian's voting for them. Thats a sad state of democracy, Sweden just had an all time low in voter turnout which was 80%.

If it was directed towards the individual, then no it wasn't sexist, its a personal insult, similar to calling a man a pig, or a chauvinist. If Mackay had said all women are dogs, then that would be considered sexist. But he did not, so it wasn't a sexist remark.

The Mid-Term Elections
Canadian Blue replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Democrats deserve to get a majority in both houses. The Republicans screwed up and are no longer in touch with the American public. As well alot democrats are starting to reach out to pro-life voters which is a good sign. Even Hillary Clinton have started saying that a government should try to make abortions safe, legal, and RARE." -
Tribal politics, something that we in western society should try to throw away after seeing the effects it had in other countries. Why can't a woman be a social conservative, or a social progressive, a socialist, a liberal, a libertarian, an authoritarian, conservative, etc. Why is it predetermined that a woman must have one way of thinking in terms of politics. The same can be said of race as well, should politics be chosen based on your racial identity. Every human being has different identites dealing with race, religion, politics, social ethics, morales, sex, etc. However a person should have the freedom to have different identities based on their own individual beliefs. As well forcing a person to have a predetermined identity based only on race or sex is wrong, it is against democracy and liberty. Canada is probably behind most of the world in terms of democracy, their are few countries in the western world where their are so few checks and balances in the Judicial, Executive, and Legislative branch. Canada needs to look at changing how Canada's democracy works, and thats why in some ways Green party representation wouldn't be a bad idea in parliment. Belinda Stronach is kind of similar to George Bush. Same type of background in a way. RB, the sad thing is that these people have adopted these values and our blind to anything else around them. GH is a hardcore Liberal, yet he will not be willing to acknowledge anything wrong with the Liberal party, past and present, thus he is simply blinded due to the fact he considers being a liberal part of his identity. As well in arguing the point he seems to believe himself and other Liberals are superior to other people based on this belief. Once again this is tribal politics, and it does nothing to serve democracy. The same can be said of people who support Bush 100% and believe people who do not support him are un-american and aren't patriotic.

Thats because most Canadian's wouldn't be able to name more then two PM's before Trudeau. As well most Canadian's probably are more infatuated with his style rather then substance. No offense GH but why are you so avidly supportive of the Liberals despite alot of their hypocritical stances. The conservatives aren't the best, but at the very least they are in touch with reality and have made some common sense decisions like arming our border gaurds. By the way, what preparations did the Liberals make in the past 13 years to be able to make Kyoto targets, none. This government wasn't really given many options due to past inaction by the Liberals. The arrogant approach to your fellow Canadian's is pretty disgusting as well, about 60-70% of Canadian's don't support the Liberals, that doesn't make them inferior. That attitude is sickening, and you don't have any right to bash your fellow Canadian's that way, it only divides a country.
-
Well, are all Canadian's left of center Liberal party members that hate the conservatives. I doubt it. The type of attitude just displayed on both sides is the reason why Canada will become more divided. No side is 100% right ever. I like some policies from the Liberals, NDP, and Conservatives. I'm not that impressed with Stronach, on a radio show when asked a question about how she solved problems at Magna she couldn't even give an answer.

I'm somewhat socially conservative as I am against abortion, racial qoutas, and support some traditional conservative values [with the exception of gay marriage and adoption which I support]. However at the same time I prefer economic liberalism and don't mind more government intervention in a mixed economy if it means helping the disadvantaged and middle class. I would be supportive of a pro-life democrat if I was down in the states. Try to find a Canadian political party that stands for that. Personally, PR would fix alot of the divisions in Canada right now, then no goverment would get 100% of the power, from 60% of the seats and 40% of the votes. If PR was in place more political choices, and governments would have to compromise in order to have a government. It works alot better the having the minority rule the country. PS: Wasn't it Jean Chretien who promised to bring in PR in 1984!

If its rediculous then why have several jurisdictions brought in civil unions. I think the SSM debate is a bit more complicated then you like to think. If were against legislating morality, then we could make pretty well anything legal. The basis of most of our laws are on morality and what the nation as a whole views wrong.
-
How is simply changing the definition of marriage in the dictionary a human right. Last I remember the Conservative were supporting civil unions which give the same benefits. It's not basic human rights, its basic stupidity. Human rights are important, but they have to be balanced with the needs of a community as well as the moral compass of a nation. I think civil unions would have been a logical balance or for that matter getting the government out of the marriage business all together. As well the right to life is also suppose to be the most basic human right, but Western society obviously doesn't respect that right. It was also the former Reform party that got shredded to pieces when they allowed MP's to say whatever they please, if anything its the Liberal party and media's fault for the iron fist, as unfortunately the only way to lead in this country is through an iron fist. Chretien showed that strategy worked best.

Thats what I admire about the Green's, in all honesty I think a large proportion of Albertan's would choose the Green's over the Liberals and NDP. They seem more moderate towards issues such as abortion and gay marriage, and I think alot of people would love to see their democratic reforms implemented. But I think they may need a different leader down the road, one that can appeal to a broader base of Canadian's.

The Simple Reason For Religious Homophobia
Canadian Blue replied to threnody's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Well, the world would be better off if Christians actaully followed what Jesus told them to do. Jesus was originally a pacifist socialist. As for the old testament I believe they are mostly fables, however many of them do relate to history. As for saying if we were all atheist their would be no more killing, atheist regimes in the 20th have killed countless millions. Human's kill due to small differences, race, religion, political allignment, etc. -
I think the Green party would be a great addition to the house, imagine if they could garner enought support to completely wipe out the Liberal party and become a viable alternative for government. That would be a great thing for the country, I checked out their platform and agreed with quite a few of the positions.

My second choice would have to be the Green party as well. Despite disagreeing with many of their social policies.

Liberals, Tories in dead heat
Canadian Blue replied to gerryhatrick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I think the worst fear mongers in Canadian political history have been the Liberals, remember the "soldiers in our cities" claim that was completely false. -
No offense but isn't that pretty high and mighty coming from a guy who supports the Liberals whose backbench MP's were merely party robots. As far as I can tell the reason he was kicked out wasn't because of his political leaning, but leaking confidential info which will get you in trouble with any political party.

Memorable Garth Turner quotes
Canadian Blue replied to gerryhatrick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Craig Oliver even said that Turner was basically begging to get kicked out of the party. I think the problem was more or less with leaking information about caucus meetings which are supposed to be out of the public eye. -
We ought to be proud of what we are doing in Afganistan. Alot of the troops are also proud of what they have been able to accomplish. Unfortunately when some people try undermining their efforts by saying they are getting killed for nothing it hurts morale. If you don't agree with the war, do so for valid reasons instead of rabbling on because we are either not handing out enough candy or being more peaceful towards those "friendly non-aggressive taliban" as some people on the left believe them to be.
-
So let me get this straight about 36% of Canadian's are far removed from Canada because they disagree with the Liberals.

Liberals, Tories in dead heat
Canadian Blue replied to gerryhatrick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I believe that before the 93 elections polls showed the PC and Liberals in the mid 30's. After a few weeks on the election trail their fortunes changed. My point is that you can't buy too much into polls. -
Liberals, Tories in dead heat
Canadian Blue replied to gerryhatrick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I wouldn't read too much into polls. The 93 election showed the PC's and Liberals in a dead heat as well and we all know how that turned out. -
You know how you can tell most of Harper's opponents can't come up with better ideas when all they do is say Harper's a scary Republican akin to Bush. I'd say Harper's closer to Clinton then Bush. I thought Stephen Harper eats kittens

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9/11_Conspiracy PN, do you buy the anti-semitic theory behind 9/11 that it was an inside job as well. Seriously, maybe a breakdown in intelligence and counter terrorism. But I'd hope your mature and smart enough to realize the BS behind the conspiracy theories.
