VICTORY in Iraq now in sight
theloniusfleabag replied to blackascoal's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Dear bush_cheney2004, Indeed, the Rwandan genocide was a shame (though you may view death as irrelevant unless it is your own, but then again, why would one care!), and though Canada was one of the few that tried to make a difference, I was disappointed at their lack of producing results. However, it leads me to a question for you. Evidently, some one in the US chain of command, when asked why no US troops were sent to Rwanda, replied that an 'informal cost analysis' was done. It was determined that some 80,000+ Rwandans would have to die before it was 'worth' the life of 1 US soldier. So, the question is, what is the formula you use? I suppose another parallel you might consider is that from a strictly amoral standpoint, Hitler's attempted eradication of the Jews was folly only insofar as he lost some great scientific minds, and could have developed the atomic bomb first, and won his war. Do you view the 'Holocaust' as merely an economic mistake? -
I knew I had heard the name 'osiris' (and most certainly Isis) before...something about being related to Ra, the ancient egyptian sun god....then it hit me. Looney Tunes! One episode with Bugs Bunny visiting 'Deepinaharta, Texas', he led a cheer..."Ra, Ra, Isis Boom Bah, Bugs Bunny, Bugs Bunny, Ra Ra Ra!" As to the age of Aquarius thing, I only recall the Fifth Dimension doing it. Featured in the hippie musical "Hair". Is that the point of the thread, that the 60's are coming back? Groovy... far out. The Fuzz are gonna like, freak out, man.

I say that this is the kookiest thing you have posted to date.

Your Toonies Are Watching You!
theloniusfleabag replied to BubberMiley's topic in Canada / United States Relations
I think that this thread can safely be dropped. The claim of spying has been retracted, and there are plenty of other 'america-bashing' threads to choose from. As BubberMiley states, ...when the 'doubloon' first came out, there were some problems with the centre piece not being firmly secured, and some did come apart. It's possible, I suppose, that some of these coins were still in circulation, forgotten about in someone's travel bag. Then when he heard that some co-workers were headed to Canada, he might have said "Here, take some of these funky Canadian Pesos I found in my shaving kit!" -
Dear jefferiah, Indeed, this argument is pretty much the epitome of the 'false dichotomy'. August1991, I am afraid Liam is more right than you. If they are 'profit able' now, then they would have been equally so before now. Such was not the case. In fact, WWII did more to put women in the workforce than either feminism or 'free enterprise'.

Poverty in Canada - Damn Statistics
theloniusfleabag replied to Keepitsimple's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Dear Canuck E Stan, I wouldn't waste time responding to this poster, who is either full of shit or trolling. You are perfectly correct, it is about the choices one makes. I was once 'poor', due to my own decisions. There were times I ate nothing but rice for a couple of days before payday, and sometimes even soya sauce was a 'luxury' I couldn't afford. However, my first stop after payday was always the beer store. Looking back, who was to blame? -
Dear jefferiah, Very well, my apologies. However, without context, (whether or not you agreed with them, for example) motivation or intent is open to interpretation. For example, if I were to cut & paste some racist jokes from some skinhead sites, and said it was simply FYI, I think I could reasonable expect to be reported, even if my original intent was to say, "Look at what these morons believe! Why do we allow them to reproduce?!" Without the caveat of intent, some people would get their nickers in a twist. This says a ton more, and then becomes a debatable point, one that I agree with you upon. But, really, is there a difference betwwen 'feminism' and radicalism? Or is it simply the bleatings of a special interest group? Is 'equality' (of not just the sexes, but of races and abilities)greater than 'feminism', or are they 'equal but different'?
-
Dear jefferiah, Finally, you have made a debatable point. As kimmy pointed out, without this, inflammatory quotes are merely 'flamebait'. Some of the quotes you provided are indeed, as you named some names above, the extreme edge of the tattered fringe of reason. While it is true women have been historically treated (in some places, to this day) as inferior, the nonsense spouted by Marilyn French (and others) in your quotes does absolutely nothing positive to address the issue. I recall a woman by the name of Judy Rebick, who was formerly the head of 'NAC', or "The National Action Commitee on the Status of Women" (succeded by Sunera Thobani, I believe) whose militancy and abrasiveness probably drove away more women from the issues than it attracted. Thobani was much more level-headed and reasonable when she presented issues, though I haven't followed anything from the group for quite some time.

Dear August1991, As to Iran, I can't say that I have heard that an exit strategy is a consideration, though they have supported the insurgency.http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/library/...70112-voa01.htm Here is the US' 'exit strategy', and they must have one, or Iraq might someday be designated 'occupied territories' as Palestine has. Quagmires and Vietnam comparisons? Perfectly legitimate if you've read the history. "The 10,000 Day War" by Micheal Maclear sums it up pretty well. An unconventional war in a distand land can't be won like in the old days, because no one ever signs a surrender document. The problem is, the US sees the signing of a troop withdrawl order as said surrender document, so they've screwed themselves.

How Canadian Are You?
theloniusfleabag replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Dear M. Dancer, I thought the capital letters explained everything... Lol. This doesn't mean sh!t, nations are going to to be things of the past in the not too distant future. Next thing you know, there will be some sort of crazy demand to consider all people as 'members of the human race', or some such nonsense. -
Dear geoffrey, Apart from you and Black Dog replying here, it seems like our resident troll is simply having a conversation with himself, via multiple names. The point isn't to have actual debate, it is to get you and Black Dog to waste your time by responding. Our troll will have a hard time beating the guy who translated the bible into 'pig latin' for the 'time-waster award', though. http://www.museumofconceptualart.com/ible-bay.html

Afghan mission "doomed to fail"
theloniusfleabag replied to Saturn's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Dear Army Guy, First let me thank you for putting your butt out there on behalf of our country. However, I must admit that I attend the Diocese of "Our Lady of Perpetual Cynicism". So, in that light, I have slim hope that this 'war' will ever be won the way it is presently being fought. The Russians were ruthless, dropped millions of anti-personnel mines, etc, had state of the art equipment, and still 'lost'. The mission is going about while not killing the right people, in my opinion. What I by that is, the fighting will continue ad nauseum as long as there are people (clerics and Imams) teaching others that the Canadians (and NATO) are fighting against Islam and for occupation, rather than self-determination. Would not 'targetted strikes' (read: Assassination) against a key few be far more effective that patrolling, waiting to get attacked, and then returning fire? -
I missed the show (not surprising), but some of the responses here were right about what I expected. 'Funny, cute, but safe'. By the way, it is pretty obvious 'mikedavid00' is a 'FLAMING INTERNET FORUM TROLL', in case no one else has noticed. Gawd I hate those. I truly believe he, Jerry Seinfeld, and about 500 others here are really the same, bored person.

I'll have to concur with August1991, and I'll have to add...The Moderator has requested that multiple threads be ended, yet there are several on Global warming already, and now this one, simply a regurgitation of already posted stuff. Really this is nothing more than 'partisan trolling' and should be reported.

Dear Charleas Anthony, Somewhat. I could have said 'cars', or somesuch, but really I was referring to 'corporate culture', the idolatry of money and power, and the notion that 'the market' will solve all problems.

Copper, Transit Workers & Bicycles
theloniusfleabag replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Dear geoffrey, Darwin strikes again. I think I would try to pull off a diamond heist or something, rather than steal live power lines. Evidently there is a television show about some dumb criminals, called 'Trailer Park Boys'. A customer of mine asked an aquaintance (who was a cop) if people could really be that dumb. His reply? "Oh yes, we deal with people just like that on a regular basis." Scarios. -
Dear Charles Anthony, Sorry old boy, I certainly didn't mean to avoid this, but lately I have been pressed for time. It's the loonies. No shortage of them, and I have no desire to dodge roving bands of maurauders and drugged out zombies while seeking my daily bread. In fact, I do too much of it at my place of work already.
-
Dear Charles Anthony, Yes, and pronto. I don't like the idea of messing around with that which got us here in the first place. It is for this reason that I lean towards 'environmentalism'. People (maybe not all) could survive without 'big business', but not without the environment. A while ago, (and in some places, even into this century) everything some people needed to live was free for the taking.

Dear August1991, Interesting. Albert Speer was an architect for the Nazis and Hitler pre(and into)-WWII, and was asked to build a huge stadium. He did some sketches (after some trips to occupied territories like Greece) with the notion of 'What will this look like centuries from now?' and called it 'the theory of ruin value'. A lot of the Nazi party members were appalled, as it suggested that the Reich may not last 1000 years, as they wished to believe. However, Hitler, who fancied himself and architect also, gave his blessing to the 'radical idea'. It was not to be, though, for the war interupted the project, and only the sketches and one test section were ever completed. The 'National socialists' thought that some projects like this were a showcase of it's nation's spirit, and expected the world to be envious of their fine stadium (they also expected to host Olympics, etc. probably exclusively in the future). So, the question is, what is expected of the stadium (or any other gov't project) that they (the gov't) should fund it?

Dear Charles Anthony, Very well. All of the dictionaries I have (which number 7, I think, ranging in dates from 1948-1997) contain 2 definitions for 'Anarchy', and 'anarchist. The one I was referring to is the "Wesbster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language" (1983) under 'Anarchist' (pg53) #2. Now, to be fair, all of the dictionaries also include your definition of the abolition of gov't and cooperation in it's stead. So, there are really two definitions, with one truly in 'abasement'. The problem is, the one with the nasty stigma attached to it is the more recognizable one, whereas you have to explain yours. There have been other names that have been changed because they shared a meaning with something else, and that something else was unpalatable. Canola oil used to be called 'Rapeseed oil' (and on the Farm Report on the radio, the commodity was called 'Rape') when I was a kid. No one really wants to tell anyone else over a beer that they specialize in 'Rape'. http://www.farm-direct.co.uk/farming/stock...rape/index.html Due to the negative connotation of the word, (and partly due to the fact that canola is a genetic modification) the name got changed. Which is much of what I feel about anarchy. Perhaps if you were a 'type 2 anarchist', or a 'libby', or something, there would be an easier distinction made.

Harper New Year to everyone

Dear kimmy, Thank you so much for the 'trite incarnate' response that you probably read in a fortune cookie. By the way, we all love you. Banter is commonplace here, but your floggings are too rare.PS. I have been drinking. -
Dear geoffrey (and jbg), All animals should be bled upon slaughter, as the blood and fatty deposits left in the meat make it decompose faster. However, as I understand it, the Rabbi 'bleeds it' with the cow's head in a stock, and uses a large machete to slit the throat about 3/4 of the way through. It kicks up a helluva fuss, but not for long. The point is, it was killed and bled by the hands of a rabbi (therefore, making it religiously and 'scripturally' acceptable for consumption). The Muslim equivalent is 'halal'. The rituals for 'kashrut' can be simple or incredibly kooky or complex. Here are some for utensils, etc. http://www.star-k.org/cons-appr-tvilaskelim.htm I have read that to make an electric kettle 'kosher', you take it apart, (immerse it if you can) and have it re-assembled by a Jew. Then it's ok. Please look up these things yourself, because I may be full of shit. It happened once before
