In any case, if crime is down from 91, but up from 62, what was going on between 62 and 91?
-
I would like demographics state, but I am not sure you can get the 1961 census online. It appeared to be " print only " when I searched.

One other thing... Are all of these things going to be made serious offenses carte blanche, or only when related to organized crime? Seems silly to charge a lone prostitute with a " serious offense " if once in a while she turns a trick in her own home.

I am adverse to gambling, even with friends. But even if I did, I would avoid slot machines like the plague. There is no skill or judgement involved at all. Whether you win has nothing to do with you. Blackjack and poker are the only casino games that interest me at all.

Face Covering in Public in Canada
Remiel replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Empirically speaking, how many of the people who wear the veils in Canada have actually pursued employment? -
I had thought about that, but I was guessing that there would be ways to get around it, suck as hiding the chips by putting them in random places, or where they would not be visible. Also, there is the possiility that we not reveal that the " shots " are actually injecting microchips. I realize that is rather underhanded and perhaps unfair to the people getting them, but in the pursuit of eliminating the threat of the LRA, I think it could be justified. How well it could work I think depends on how much of an understanding of technology the people in the LRA have. By the sounds of it, they should have practically none, but an expert on them would know far better than I. Do they even know what a microchip is, and how it could be used to track someone?

Whoa! Hold on here. That is not the sort of accusation you should make lightly, and without meaning the full comparison. After all, no one says, " You're as bad as Hitler, " just because they think someone is insane. They generally have to be a mass-murdering psychopath to go with it. -

I do not know about that. I do not think secular respect for the teachings attributed to Jesus is any worse than respect for anyone else on the basis of their morality. Not only religious figures get praised. -
Harper Neocons favour ideology instead of data

Actually, that designation supposedly goes to Ted Menzies this year. Not Day. -
As a favour to you, I think I should point out that you should avoid making statements like this in the future. Whenever someone says something like this, they are almost always implicitly directing it at someone, which in turn makes in an ad hominem attack, which just includes them in their own definition of idiocy.

A person such as you who advocates the murder of their opponents has no business praising Jesus. -
I was thinking that one effective way to combat them would be to chip everyone at risk of being taken. Once the group could be tracked through the people it has kidnapped, surround them, and move inwards until you have gotten them all. As popular as hatred of Islamic fundamentalists is, I think these guys really take the cake for most screwed up and depraved " religious " group.

I want to sleep. So, for now, I am just going to post this DiManno article on the LRA: http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/843637--dimanno-child-sadists-child-victims

The really weird part is that Day does not seem to get that you cannot lock up people that are not reported. You build prisons for the prisoners you have, not for the ones you think there ought to be. -
Palestinians - Pawns in Arab "Scramble for Land"?
Remiel replied to jbg's topic in The Rest of the World
Maybe I am having an obtuse moment, but I do not understand what I am supposed to get from this. The " Western cheerleaders " of the Palestinians do not understand that other Arabs do not give a crap about Palestinians... therefore the " Western cheerleaders " should not either? Seems rather flawed to me. -
Palestinians - Pawns in Arab "Scramble for Land"?
Remiel replied to jbg's topic in The Rest of the World
I was not anticipating that millions would want to. Jews still have an attachment to Israel after thousands of years. There is no reason to believe that anyone elses attachment to where they are from is more fragile. -
The scale, however, really means, " equivalent " to though, does it not? Because we cannot capture alls of Earth's energy without killing off every other living species, really. Capturing all the energy of the Sun might be doable if a dyson sphere were actually possible. But literally capturing all the energy of a galaxy... I doubt it could be done. I would bet some phenomena just preclude capturing their energy... And I would also imagine putting a dyson sphere around every star would have weird consequences...

Palestinians - Pawns in Arab "Scramble for Land"?
Remiel replied to jbg's topic in The Rest of the World
Were I in the business of wishing the past to have been different, I would wish that Canada had offered to become the home of European Jews fleeing prosecution. And if there are Palestinians would want to leave the rat race of the Middle East behind, I would be happy to take them here. But I think trying to set up a seperate state for the Palestinians, or the Jews, somewhere else, would just lead to a variant of the same fiasco things are right now. Also, jbg, what makes you think that Palestinians have not known for years that other Arabs did not give a crap about them? In any case, if for some reason the " Hashemite Kingdom " were to suddenly disappear and be replaced by a democratic Jordan... Well, suddenly we would have a country where Palestinians are in charge. I do not see a lot of appetite for that regime change, however, here or there. -
My wild guess is that rather than the brain being rewired the resources may have been freed up to carry on with those operations. Depending on how much of a role the brain plays in the normal function of the body, if something is about to give, it may be the brain does not keep wasting computing power on it.

On a more technical note, is solar energy that reaches the Earth counted as part of the energy output of the Earth or the energy output of the Sun for the purposes of the scale? I am not sure if it was Kardaschev's estimate or someone elses, but there was a suggestion that we could reach Level 1 by 2100... Though I am kind of skeptical about that. Supposedly we currently use only about 0.16% of the Earth's energy output. The estimate for Level 2 though... was 11000 and change.

Brutal attack by Lebanese forces on Israeli border
Remiel replied to Bonam's topic in The Rest of the World
I had a point by point reply, but when I tried to submit my internet pulled some bull about not being able to find the page. So screw it. -
One signigicant problem I see with having a technical solution for everything is that technical solutions often require a lot of energy to implement. The idea behind something like the Kardaschev scale is that civilizations use exponentially more energy as they advance, right? While there are some promising new technologies on the horizon for energy production, I am not sure if they can deal with exponential levels of demand...

I think that is an interesting idea. I take it then you were not in favour of the decision to close down prison farms? Day also says the Niagara River runs North to South.
