Whatever. We can argue about this on and on and the only thing we're going to do is get farther and farther away from the word 'sham'. They were not a 'sham'. That's just a 'talking point' from some website without any decent reason to call it a 'sham'. It was every bit as legitimate as any of our elections. .
-
Keep telling yourself that. No they weren't. More of them voted than us. There were allegations of voting irregularities (as there often are in a lot of places including here), and it's true that a large (geographically, very little by population) region was unable to participate, but that logistic problem has been worked out for next time. What so many seem not to grasp (or admit) is that even if the first administration is a little composed and rushed it doesn’t change the fact that now the framework has been set for the future. They can do whatever they wish with it. but they were investigated and it turned out to be nothing. It's an insult to the people who worked so hard to make it happen and to the Afghans who risked their lives to participate to call them a sham. They were, in fact, probably more legitimate than most of ours are. .

I have great respect for Gwen Dyer. One of the few I will still listen to. If he were here right now one of the first things he'd probably point out is that you can have a firm grasp of all the information you can possibly gather, you can have years of experience, and you can be brilliant and still turn out to be wrong (at least a little). So much more refreshing than all the people who wish they could sound like Gwen Dyer (because he's intensely intelligent, well known and has thusly created a fashion of himself without realizing it), and yet don't really understand their own talking points. .

Nah, I'm just having a little fun. This is the NHL play offs not a proposition from Lichtenstein. Have fun...or have you given up on that too? lol. :-) .

lol. No doubt. Of course you notice this trend, geoffrey. This is 'your trend'. :-) This is your pattern. Not unlike some people who can only see certain patterns and nothing else, leaving them unable to tie their shoes, but they can multiply 6 double-digit numbers in their head. You decided long ago that everything has to have something to do with America and the Republicans. I know you're joking but I also know deep down you're not really sure if you are. Bottom line you pussies is that you need 4 games to win not 2 and not one either, so you can cheer for the other side hidden behind your doom-and-gloom crap and disguising it as an intelligent sceptical observation, but I know.... Edmontonians know, that the truth is yer just jealous and you want us to lose because you Easterners just can't take it when we have something you don't. Navel gazers like you guys don't get to participate when we win. When we do, to you guys it won’t be that Canada won it but that Alberta won it instead of you and that's just too lame. Regarding the rant: I can rant. Sue me. .

Muslim leaders claim society excludes youth
killjoy replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I believe there is 'truth' to it, but not relative truth which is all that counts. By relative truth I mean it is accurate but moot if you consider so many immigrant youth are in that position and don't blow shit up. I actually disagree entirely with what the article seems to be suggesting which is that these TO terrorists were marginalized by the rest of us. This is BS. They were second generation and fully 'Canadianized'. They became 'radicalized' through, apparently, self-appointed religious leadership.....like Rev. Moon. There are youth in this country that just got here and can't even speak the language(s). I imagine they are very lonely and have plenty of reason to feel 'marginalized'. They are also, statistically speaking, the best behaved. I disagree with the conclusions entirely. I have nothing to go on 'cept going on 14 years of experience with 'militarized' young men and women. They need to rebel, but paradoxically need to do it by conforming to an esoteric group mentality. Not surprisingly, when you strip it away, Left and Right youth are exactly alike. I totally know what makes the 'wrong' ones tick. In my opinion they got to know Canadians too well. Their tacit approval for at least the underdog, if not terrorists. Their 'hatred' of America. They did it because their Canadian peer group would not hold objection, while their immediate Muslim peer group encouraged it. Read their bios. They were all 'well liked in school' and had 'many friends', until they came under the wing of some psychos, at which point they slowly disengaged from society and 'got weird'. They remind me a lot of Malvo. What this article suggests is total crap and likely a product of disbelief. Having said that, I still think... ...someone should take that hand and quick. You don't like Afghanistan? Fine. You don't like Bush or Iraq? Well I dunno what that's got to do with us but fine. When you start desperately trying to make up reasonable rationales for this (alleged) crime, then you're really behaving like those poor drooling idiots who spend hours trying to put every peg in the round hole except the round one.....thats the last one they try and only after trying the others over and over again. They were wrong. They were wrong. They were wrong. Surely there's a 'reason' why they wanted to do it, but it wasn't because they were lonely. . -
How would you fix our current problems in Canada?
killjoy replied to mikedavid00's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Excuse me. "mere"? A "mere" 10 million? Please look up the numbers of armies through out the world and then come back here and call it a 'mere' 10million. China doesn't even have 1/2 that many soldiers. We could beat China, "fairly easy without nukes"? I disagree. They're even all in one place and wearing uniforms. Look at it another way: The number of acting, involved Islamic terrorists out there, (NOT including Iraqi insurgents) has been estimated by many experts to be under 5000 world wide. Lets double that and call it 10000. That's 10000 people who are walking the walk, not just talking the talk. Look at the trouble we're having now. I mean people want tokick out all muslims for the actions of 17 teenagers (or equivilent to about 2 men). Please re-evaluate your 10 million is "mere" statement Easy?. No way. I stand by what I said. we get 10 million Islamo-fanatics and everyone muslim or otherwise is in serious, serious trouble. You can fight a small portion of 10000 of them, or 10000000 of them. I'm not interested in what's fair. I'm interested in what's possible and least bloody. no. In 1978 Canada was the second 'fattest' country in the world. 'Participaction' was a program launched by the government that included commercials by athletes and MP's and regular people. In 3 years we were MUCH healthier and slimmer, (of course since the we've grown 'fat' again but that’s not the point). I suggest the same thing. We have Muslim MP's who have already spoken out against this (of course) we need to get them and community leaders on TV doing opinion pieces. I also suggest creating police initiatives to work with the community. Accommodating bizarre religious practices is not something I was going to suggest, nor do I understand why it would help. Also I don't understand what 'bizarre religious practices' we're stopping now. I would also point out that a few years ago the Supreme court laid down the law and allowed Sikhs to carry ceremonial daggers....much to the chagrin and paranoia of many. Nice to see that it's been such a 'problem' that no one even remembers it anymore. . -

All the power to him. I'm guessing he didn't watch the video. Amazing how long you can stay alive while someone is cutting your head off with a butcher knife. Hogtied with three guys on him. Reminds me of the farm. Silence of the lambs, so-to-speak. Revenge. Someone hits you and you don't hit back because you're afraid he'll hit you again. Trust me, he'll hit you again anyways. Revenge isn't the same as open conflict. How were those kids in Toronto "hit"? What inspired their 'revenge'? Before you rush to answer think about how many people are out there being truly wronged by someone or something, who are truly upset with the 'system' and how many of them aren't ever going to blow something or someone up over it. When was the last time the Natives blew something up? It's one thing to have grievances. It's another to kill indiscriminately over it. . -

killjoy replied to mikedavid00's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Not really no. I think what we call them out here is "Bob" or "George" or "Sashi" depending on what their name is. Last time the word "Pakies" was used in Alberta with any frequency mullets were 'new' and 'cool'. Nobody in a population mass of more than 20k in Alberta uses that word (or other like it) anymore. As to the rest of it I don't know what you're talking about. Alberta has a very low unemployment rate and about 30% of us are either self-employed or own our own businesses. I have a feeling the writer of that post moved from Alberta before the influx of Eastern immigrants in the '90's. Half of us are asian now. Deal. . -

I have no problem with the right to own arms, within reason. But a cop is more than just a guy with a firearm. . -
I agree, but honestly I think between the press and the coalition the only ones who think this is big news is the press. I don't believe your or Liams' points are lost on the coalition. It's the press that is perpetually in love with the 'newest thing'. .

We do and we are. You can multiply the number of cops until we're all cops and they still won't prevent crime. Steel bars on windows, loud alarm systems, decent work, decent jail sentences and friendly dogs all prevent crime more than the police can. . -

If you say so. I’m not going to defend either side. If it's your perception that the left are a "little more nuanced" than the Right, well so says you. Again this all comes down to point of view. This puny, tiny insignificant forum is the know-all end-all barometer of what you're talking about? If so than forget that I ever replied. All in all I'd have to say it comes down to both perspective and attitude. If you're on the Left/Right and you never (rarely) use derogatory hyperbole to describe the other side then I can image it would get very annoying. If it all comes down to August, well then you should've said "Where would August be if it weren't for the Lefty straw man?". I feel certain I wouldn't have replied or even raised an eyebrow on that one. Overall I think we only see what ‘the other side’ does. Luckily, speaking of political alignment, I remain on the fence where the grass is always green. PS: I've been a member on a few forums. I hope this isn't too discouraging but I'd have to say that this one ranks at least an 8 out of 10 in terms of maturity. (at least) . -

They were never installed with the idea in mind to prevent crime, only to try and discourage it and collect evidence and identification to help find and prosecute. It's really no different than the police. Ask any one of them and they'll be glad to tell you that 99% of their job involves tracking down criminals after the fact. This idea that cops or security cameras prevent crime is just plain wrong. They don’t. They never did. They never will. If you're going to live in a free society then you have to put up with the fact that anyone can commit crime if that's what they choose. Unless you want to live in "1984' and have a cop on every corner complete with assault rifle. If you think police or cameras were ever there to be at the right moment at the right time and prevent crime with any sizible effect then I have a stone that prevents bears from attacking you. . -

No you actually miss the point, if you don't mind me saying. You feel frustrated because all on the Left have been reduced to a meaningless definition. My point is why do you think this is only going one way? The Left love to do it too. I find it ironic actually that you feel this is a phenomenon only perpetrated by the Right. The Left LOVE to do this. IOW you can you sit there with a straight face and ask, “Where would the Right be without the straw man Left”? when it’s blatantly obvious that the question should be reversed. You think people enjoy being likened to Hitler every time they have a viable immigration concern? Most of the "Left's" net is also cast so wide as to mean, eventually, that someone is 'Right' if they don't see things like the idividual in question does. Seems to me you believe the Right is more guilty of this and it's just not true. So really the statement is a little pointless. . -

Where would the Left be without all the 'Little Eichmann's? Where would they be without the 'neocon's and all the ridiculious conspiricies? I'm sorry you feel picked on but it's an ebb and flow mentality. When people feel society is insecure or in danger, they go Right. When things are good and it's time to burn your money, people go Left. . -

Me2. The idea of the underdog or the weaker or losing party lends the illusion of automatic righteousness. The two are not indicative of each other. Just because you have been hit, just because you are losing a struggle, that does not mean you don't deserve to. Just because you are playing David to someone else's Goliath does not make you more deserving. Like this girlfriend I had for about 2 weeks who would cry on cue when she wanted an easy way out of an argument. The allure of the 'guerrilla freedom fighter' has become a cultural icon, literally and nothing more. People base their whole poly-sci 'intellect' on cool t-shirts. .
