  1. Not going to play guessing games with you. How hard is it for you to spell it out? Never heard of it. What does it have to do with catholic and protestant school boards? I thought that's what we're discussing. As I said, many Canadians don't support late term abortions anyway. So we don't perceive a gap. See above. You really think late term abortions on demand are such a great thing to crow about?
  2. Please back that up. Why do Canadians earn less because of medicare when the employer doesn't have the expense of paying for medical insurance for their employees? Try to do it without being snide, if you can. Why does Costco charge more here than in the US because of medicare. You'll have to do more than just keep asserting it to be so.
  3. You keep repeating this point. I've worked in the US, I know how the system works. Employers don't legally have to pay, but they do. Why? Not from the goodness of their hearts, but because they want to attract employees. If the govt provided that health care, think of how much more the employer could pay their employees, even if some of that was taxed back to pay for the system. Remember you're already paying taxes for medicare, medicaid and military. I worked in the US fresh out of grad school. My employer provided HMO coverage. I couldn't choose my own doctor, had to get approval for procedures from Kaiser, had to go to Kaiser hospitals, had to co-pay for procedures and had to co-pay off my paycheck as well. Blew me away. I was glad I never had to use that system while I was there.
  4. Such as? Got nothing to do with down south at all. Just that the system doesn't seem very broken, and trying to fix it might make things worse instead of better. It's complacency because there's no real problem. When one arises, attitudes will change. All true. But, you all have access problems too, and a lot more religious interference in your abortion laws and abortion providers. We did lag behind, but we don't anymore. That was then, this is now. As for women travelling to Kansas, that's sad, because I'm not in favor of late term abortions anyway. I would outlaw them, so women would still have to travel to Kansas. Until your religious right manages to shut down abortions all together, that is. Then American women will flood across to Canada.
  5. What utter bullshit. Life in Canada is more expensive because of economies of scale. Americans do earn more gross pay on average - what's that got to do with healthcare? Americans don't pay taxes for some of their medical system (Their's is only 50% public, ours is 70%) but employers pay huge amounts to private insurers. To the point that American employers tried to argue that the Canadian system was an unfair subsidy to Canadian business. Think of how much more an American employer could pay their employees if they didn't have to pay those healthcare costs. Think of how much more money and American employee would have in their pocket if they didn't have all those co-pays on their employer supplied insurance. Nice little insult, but it seems you who's just willing to make up economics to suit your bias.
  6. You have no problems with FN's or vis minorities? Ha ha. Actually we're the country others look to for successfully dealing with large scale immigration of visible minorities. Don't see how schoolboards in Ontario have anything to do with FN problems. I don't know what this means. What universe do you live in? Canada's supreme court nullified our abortion laws after a number of challenges. No new laws were put in place. (So nothing to do with the US) Doctors in Canada have decided to put restrictions on when they are actually willing to perform abortions. I totally agree with that, would like to see that legislated, so we don't do late term and partial birth - might as well just do a cesarean at that point.
  7. Defense from what? The system works fine, much better than yours. We had our little scare with religious funding (for Christians) by the conservatives in Ontario, they got their asses handed to them as a result, so it's doubtful anybody will go there again. It's not theoretically perfect, but works well in practice. Just like our abortion (lack of) laws. Remember that politics is the art of the possible. That's why you have such a dog's breakfast of new healthcare legislation. Because something sane, like our system, just wasn't possible down there.
  8. It is when the outcomes are the same. Or better if you take infant mortality and life expectancy into account. But that probably has more to do with less income inequality and a better social support system. You're wrong about our system being the most expensive. France, which you tout, and Germany both spend more. And yes, we should look to Europe to improve our healthcare system. Unfortunately the horror show down south about theirs drowns out any possibility of introducing any more private elements into ours for fear of the slippery slope. (Our system is about 70% public, yours is about 50% public) UNITED STATES: 15.9 pct of GDP, $6,657 per capita BRAZIL: 7.9 pct of GDP, $371 per capita CANADA: 9.7 pct of GDP, $3,430 per capita CHINA: 4.7 pct of GDP, $81 per capita FRANCE: 11.1 pct of GDP, $3,807 per capita GERMANY: 10.7 pct of GDP, $3,628 per capita INDIA: 5.0 pct of GDP, $36 per capita ISRAEL: 7.9 pct of GDP, $1,533 per capita JAPAN: 8.2 pct of GDP, $2,936 per capita MEXICO: 6.4 pct of GDP, $474 per capita SOUTH AFRICA: 8.7 pct of GDP, $437 per capita SWEDEN: 8.9 pct of GDP, $3,598 per capita RUSSIAN FEDERATION: 5.2 pct of GDP, $277 per capita UNITED KINGDOM: 8.2 pct of GDP, $3,064 per capita
  9. My preference is not to have them, but we've got them, and there doesn't seem to be a problem. These are both mainstream boards, as I understand it. (My province doesn't have them.) Because, if as you say, it's in the constitution, it's very difficult to change. So far there hasn't been a challenge to this, so it will likely continue on for now. We'll if it matter to you, you should immigrate here so you get a vote. As for ammunition, ammunition for what? Who are you shooting, why, and do they even know they've been shot?
  10. It's grandfathered in for catholics and protestants. Not much problem there, as long as the province makes sure the religious based schools maintain standards. And I believe they do, since both catholic and protestant school boards are "mainstream" they're not just for those two denominations. They also have catholic and protestant social services, doesn't seem to be a problem either. If some other religious group sues because they want their own publicly funded school board, that's when it will hit the fan. As we saw in the last Ontario election, pandering to religious factions is a good way to get your ass kicked at the polls.
  11. So where does the money for Romney care come from?
  12. Ontario, which does have protestant and catholic school boards just said no to Muslim schools. It's time we got rid of this bullshit. Government schools should be secular. I believe most provinces have a vouchers system for private schools, which can be any religion. The only problem there is the province gets lax with ensuring the private school meets the same standards as the public ones. EG Bountiful. With Muslims asserting themselves more and more, I think this issue will become more prominent, and, I hope, lead to a clamping down.
  13. So obviously they find it cheaper to go that route than building up the infrastructure themselves. Saves money.
  14. What would American incomes be if employers didn't have to pay insurance premiums? And the co-pays that the employees have to pay? Canadian health care has equal outcomes at almost half the cost. Sounds pretty good to me. In fact some American employers tried to make the case that the Canadian medical system is an unfair subsidy, since they have to pay such high health care premiums.
  15. If someone asks me to back up my statement, and I refer her to the link I took if from, that is deserving of your scorn?
  16. People may go bankrupt because they're too sick to work. Nobody is bankrupted because of medical expenses.
  17. Another Breitbart delicious serving of Kool-Ade. Not sure what the underlined part has to do with the title? Nor how worried I should be about all those socialist Muslim Democrats wreaking havoc in that other country down south. Are there many of them? Do they plan to move in on Canada next? We're already socialist, so we're easy pickings, except we ain't got no Democrats.
  18. Lots of Canadians going to the US for major surgeries they pay for themselves, are they? You can hang on to your biases, but as the study I quoted shows, we get the same outcome for almost half the cost, with everybody covered, nobody going bankrupt because of medical expenses, nobody denied care or insurance. Sounds like the better system to me for the average person.

  21. Yep. If Mulcair can keep a leash on his mouth, think about what the reaction will be to what he's saying, he seems to have a good shot. Even that oilsands stuff, he said some perfectly reasonable things, but he's gotta know it will get twisted around by his foes.
  22. Absolutely right. They should have just expanded medicare to everyone. Already the private system has so much paperwork that some doctors have moved to Canada just for that reason - they spend more time doing all the paperwork for all the insurance providers that they don't have much time to treat patients. Administrative costs in the US are far higher than in Canada. Or, give everybody in the US the military medical (socialized) system. But then, as Bill Kristol said, ordinary Americans don't deserve this system.
