  1. Well, there are plenty of quotes out there from the residents involved in the shooting themselves saying you'd be nuts to talk to the police and that people have been killed for it before. So the police definitely need to do a better job in reaching out and building bridges with these people.
  2. It's just as false a premise to presume that every immigrant brings a job with them. Maybe they only bring 1/2 a job with them, for a net loss.
  3. What methods? We know that harsh punishment doesn't work, or the US would have no crack dealers or murderers. (Detroit, smaller than TO, has had 180 murders so far this year. TO? 27) You live in your own little dream world, just as much as the people who you say think that basketball courts are the solution.
  4. Just from this thread: There is nothing wrong with having a temp workers system, as long as we make sure that we're training Canadians for the jobs we need and the temp workers aren't used to undercut wages. Bringing in 250,000 a year is way over the top. Still better than bringing in all those immigrants for jobs that aren't there, tho.
  5. I totally agree with Obama and this is once facet of meritocracy that often gets overlooked by conservatives - no man is an economic island. But of course Obama should have chosen his words more carefully - "you didn't build that alone" is what he should have said.
  6. It's only a fallacy if every immigrant seeking work creates a job just by being here. Just not true.
  7. Jesus said "turn the other cheek." Do all the people who call themselves Christians but don't turn the other cheek still get to celebrate Christmas?
  8. It's our guilt that makes us do that, but I think you and I are not being sufficiently guilty.
  9. Let them exclude the evil white man, that's their right. Just as it's the evil white man's right to exclude them. I don't get it. Straight white men want to associate is a heteronormative, racist, phallocentric conspiracy. Lesbian black women want to hang out together it's empowerment for a marginalized underrepresented group. How long are we going to keep spouting that bs?
  10. I tried to post an article that was removed. It said what I've been thinking for a long time. Immigration brings in more people every two years than all the Natives in Canada. These people don't share the white mans's guilt, and at some point are going to tell the natives if they want to eat they've got to work. No more free ride based on race.
  11. We are safer if gangbangers only use knives because they're very poor shots. With knives they'll mostly kill each other instead of bystanders. But yes, we should make guns freely available to anybody - bet it would knock hell out of those knife killing statistics.
  12. Just pc cant. If you're against white only clubs, you should extend that to all clubs based on race. Otherwise you look like a pretzel. In fact the same situation happens with gays, where they have claimed the right for gay only clubs, but get all hissy if a straight club seeks to exclude them. Women do the same thing. If you want equality, you have to be willing to take what you approve of with what you don't.
  13. well that mother should not have allowed her son to join that gang, obviously. Mothers don't let your babies grow up to be gangsters, as DeWillie Nelson sang so poignantly.
  14. You could always start one. Just as there are black only, women only, Native only, etc. Freedom of association and all.
  15. I'm not open to carrying handguns anywhere. Merely pointing out a different scenario where carrying a handgun isn't about wanting to kill anybody unless in self-defense. Tough laws just don't do it - it's just for show by the politicians. Putting more money into enforcement, even with the current laws we have would do way more. If tough laws were the answer, the US would be crime and drug free. Legalizing drugs would do even more. Not importing poor unskilled people with a culture of violence would help a bit too. Working to reduce poverty would be a big help. I don't have a problem with toughening up gun laws. Just don't sit back and think you've solved the problem - it's the least effective response we could give.
  16. Guess we could take a poll of Canadian Natives and ask which fate they would have preferred. My guess is they're not as noble as the American Natives apparently are.
  17. And mere possession may just be somebody who wants to protect themselves in a tough neighborhood. Doesn't mean it should be legal, doesn't mean he was planning to shoot anybody either. I think you're off base with your idea to toughen gun laws. If tough laws did the trick, we would have wiped out crime by now. As I said above, just from an enforcement pov, increasing police going after guns would do way more than toughening the laws. But still not eradicate the problem.
  18. And if Augusta chose, presumably they could ban women as guests too.
  19. Pedophiles as a group are sexually attracted to children. Doesn't mean there aren't gay pedophiles and straight ones. Take a look at NAMBLA - you think those men are interested in girls?
  20. It would be great if legislative action had an impact, but it probably wouldn't do much. The rush to legislation for identified problems seldom solves the problem. Just on the criminal system side, having more enforcement of current gun laws would do way more than toughening the laws with the same level of enforcement. Slowing down trade with the US so we could more thoroughly check for incoming weapons would do a lot too - but who can afford that.
  21. Some do. Some go after only one gender. Some get off on ultrasound images of fetus', where I doubt gender is an important part.
  22. If heavy sentences worked, there would be no murders. I would like to see judges get tougher with people possessing illegal guns, but as long as the gang culture thrives, it won't really do much. If you're willing to shoot people and be shot as a day to day occurrence, jail isn't going to be much of a deterrent.
  23. Are they a private organization that gets no money from govt? If so, they can do what they want.
