I think most professional polling firms know that. Yes they do and that's why the huge surge in popularity for the Liberals in the West...British Columbia in particular. No wonder David Emerson rarely shows his face in Vancouver.

Do they have data supporting those differentiated rates? What are the statistics? Do the they also have date for single and for "married" gays? Shoudn't married gays enjoy discount insurance rates compared to that of single gays? Could it simply not be that people in a stable marital situation have less accidents, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. If so, SSM could lead to greater stability of the couple and hence greater road security. Then, everyone should be for SSM just for its value in increasing road security and making a few less casualties each year. Some insurance companies have lower rates for smokers but do we want society to operate on the principles of insurance companies?

But many people have the psychological need to feel superior to others and religious mumbo jumbo fills that need admirably.

Smokers have a higher probability of developing lung cancer and a host of other diseases. That's a cost to society which has a negative impact on all of us. Should we make smoking and the possession of cigarettes illegal?

Yes, I never imagined he could get more than 30% of the popular vote. He managed to get 36% last January because of extreme antipathy to the Liberals but he's now once again closer to 30% than 36%. I still believe that CPC can form a majority but not with Harper as leader.

And even if it were forced on Canadians, I don't see that Harper's policies on bilingualism differ from those of the Liberals.

I'm talking about economic consequences if the US decides to do a clampdown on the border. I think we should not be held hostage to irrational US drug policies. Per capita, the US has more people in jail for drug possession than any country in the world. Besides, the US needs our natural resources and I can't imagine them giving up our resources because we don't jail young Canadians for simple possession.

Right, not necessarily but there's something fruitcake-like about wanting permanent criminal records for simple possession of a few grams of marijuana. Approximately 5% of those found guilty of simple possession go to jail. Harper supports the current criminalization laws. None of the major parties do nor do a majority of Canadians. The current simple possession laws, which Harper favours, simply encourage disrespect for the law.

Other than so-cons, who cares if thousands of criminals lose their jobs and the money instead goes into government coffers? I feel honoured CB for deserving a special mention. You'll be pleased to know that in less than a week I depart for Asia and will have no web access for a month. The last time this happened was a year ago. When I left Canada, Martin was ahead in the polls and the next time I had internet access, Harper was. Could happen again though I think Harper might need something more novel than adscam and claims of Liberal corruption to do Dion in.

It is difficult to impossible to form a majority government with less than 40% of the vote. (Chretien managed it because of the split between the PCs and Reform.) Poll taken during or just after the Liberal convention (ie. polls most slanted to the Liberals) show them at best in the high 30s. The only news here is that the NDP has sunk and the Green Party will remain a fringe party. The other news is what happens in Quebec where I think the Tories and the Liberals will add a few seats at the expense of the BQ. I agree that Dion'll need 40% to win a majority. However, the trendline shows the Liberals rising, the NDP declining and the CPC declining somewhat depending on the province. In BC, CPC has declined dramatically and now trail the Liberals by more than 10 points. My point is that if this trend continues, the Liberals will win a majority.
