Jack Layton Calling for Gas Control Prices
normanchateau replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
"Gasoline taxes are a form of carbon tax already in place, and New Zealand, Germany and the United Kingdom have been charging greenhouse gas taxes with some encouraging results." http://www.globe-net.ca/search/display.cfm?NID=2524&CID=2 As this article reveals, gasoline taxes are a form of carbon tax. Must be why Harper chose to renege on his promise to lower them. He's becoming green. -
Why don't you suggest to Peter MacKay, the Minister responsible for Passport Canada, that he should get rid of the public servants at Passport Canada since they're not needed. Some on this thread blamed the victims but it's good to know that the real problem is the public servants.

If The Taliban Didn't Have Jack
normanchateau replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
"President Hamid Karzai acknowledged for the first time Friday he has met with Taliban militants in attempts to bring peace to Afghanistan, which is struggling to quell a rising insurgency. In the past, Karzai has offered, without success, to hold talks with the fugitive Taliban leader Mullah Omar and renegade warlord Gulbudin Hekmatyar. Some officials in his government, including provincial governors, are thought to have held informal talks with militants in the south and east, but with little apparent success to calm the insurgency. "We have had representatives from the Taliban meeting with different bodies of Afghan government for a long time," Karzai told a news conference. "I have had some Taliban coming to speak to me as well." Karzai did not disclose any details of the meetings, when they took place or who attended. Hundreds of former members of the hard-line Taliban regime, including a sprinkling of former senior commanders and officials, have reconciled with the government since they were ousted from power in the U.S.-led invasion in 2001." -

Good point. I thought the enviro. people wanted to keep the prices high to lower consumption, Jack isn't making sense at all in that context. I agree. Jack is wrong. Keeping prices high is a good way to lower consumption. Maybe that's why Stephen Harper chose not to honour his promise to lower gas taxes. It's because he cares so much about the environment. -
I don't remember any specific amount....but yes, he did give some funding. What Canadian Prime Minister increased it by more than 12.8 billion?

Harper supporters? The NDP/rabble.ca crowd direct a venom at May that is worthy of a Stalinist/Trotskyite purge, show trial, axe. No doubt about it. The NDP loathes the Greens and that's no surprise given that to some extent they're competing for the same voters. But for Tory supporters to feel this way about May surprises me. Perhaps they, like the NDP, view her as potentially stealing some of their votes as the electorate becomes increasingly more disillusioned with the inept, current government.

The plot thickens. Look who is acknowledging negotiations with the Taliban: http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/wi...world-headlines Maybe he got the idea from Taliban Jack who suggested it sometime last year.

Wow, the media is really giving her a pass on this comment. They would freak if a Tory said that. Actually May's religious views and her opposition to abortion have been reported frequently by the media, e.,g. May: "Nobody in their right mind is for abortions. I've talked women out of having abortions. I would never have an abortion myself, not in a million years. I can't imagine the circumstances that would have ever induced me to it." http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/columni...52-48221ba043ed While I personally deplore her position on a number of issues, I am astonished at the venom directed at her by Harper supporters. Both Harper and May are anti-abortionists and both have strong religious opinions which influence their political decisions. Why don't they don't share common views on the environment? Doesn't Harper know that even evangelical Christians now embrace global warming? See: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/08/national...ec7507a&ei=5070

In that case, NATO beneficiary and Afghan President Hamid Karzai deserves the "Taliban Karzai" tag. See: http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/wi...world-headlines -
How Much for Harper's Make-Up?

Judging by his interactions with the media and muzzling of some ministers, opacity is the new transparency. -

IF it's up to Bush, he'd keep the troops there until they won or they ALL died! After all, he went in for the oil and hasn't gotten it yet!! So perhaps the Dems should do is just tell Bush they are coming home and just do it! Most of the soldiers don't want to be there because its a civil war. Isn't it the same in Afghanistan. Afghans against the Taliban?? Only time will prove whose right. Afghanistan is already an Islamic republic or theocracy in that the Koran trumps all other rights in their current constitution. The main difference between the Islamic Karzai government and the Taliban is one of degree of extremism. In order to appease the Taliban, the Karzai government is adopting some of their methods. So why does Stephen Harper now defend it? http://www.vivelecanada.ca/article.php/20050430091919834 Leftism, nationalism or hypocrisy in the guise of political expediency?

I didn't say Paul Martin had weakened the military. I said: So you acknowledge that Paul Martin increased military spending by 12.8 billion dollars in his 2005 budget, the largest increase in military spending since World War II?

Come on now Jefferiah. Do you seriously believe that all five Conservative MPs who supported the motion did so for any reason other than to pander to francophones who might be lured into voting for them? One of the more intelligent comments on this situation came from Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre. He stated “They (Canadians) want to put the politicians into the penalty box and let Team Canada put the puck in the net." Poilievre was referring to all the MPs on the committee, including the Conservative MPs.

Jack Layton Calling for Gas Control Prices
normanchateau replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Add Norman to the list of one trick ponies. Argus would blame immigrants for high gasoline prices. Leafless would blame Quebec and the French. Norman blames Stephen Harper. I don't blame Harper for high gasoline prices. I merely pointed out that he broke another promise which was to reduce the tax on gasoline. Is the Canadian Taxpayers Federation wrong in their information on this link? http://www.taxes.ca/blog/archives/gas_tax/index.php -

Stephen Harper vowed to reduce gas taxes if he were elected. According to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, this is yet another broken promise. Source: http://www.taxes.ca/blog/archives/gas_tax/index.php -
Tory Minister Racks Up $150,000
normanchateau replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
So of course this little indiscretion is A-okay. Didn't you know that in 2007 it's appropriate and noble to attack scandals under Jean Chretien's leadership but attacking scandals under the Stephen Harper government is evidence of being partisan? -

'A slap in the face' to Quebecers

The fact remain that Stephen Harper opposed bilingualism in 2001 but became it's champion in 2004.
