Ignatieff and Harper agree on Gaza
normanchateau replied to Keepitsimple's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I suppose it depends on whether you view it as moral to defend yourself when others are shooting rockets into your country. If rockets were being indiscriminately fired into Canada, I would hope that our leaders would choose to defend us rather than appease the terrorists. -
Conservatives to table $40 billion deficit: CTV
normanchateau replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yet in the 2007 budget alone, they promised $39 billion in extra future spending thereby increasing future debt: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...me=&no_ads= And guess which province got the lion's share of that future spending? Harper's spending has been totally out of control since he took office. Even when faced with clear evidence of a pending recession, on October 30th, 2008, Harper chose to swell the size of cabinet to 38, increasing the cost of government by millions of dollars. What an incredibly stupid man and what a disgrace to fiscal conservatism. Harper supporters frequently claim that Harper has to keep spending like a drunken sailor because he's in a minority position. I'd like to know which opposition parties wanted Harper to bloat his cabinet. -
Ignatieff vaults Liberals into tie with Tories: poll
normanchateau replied to Barts's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Whether or not he is a fool, he is definitely stupid. In the 2007 federal budget, he promised Quebec an extra $3 billion per year annually in social programs, infrastructure and equalization payments. He squandered the surplus and furiously shovelled money from the rest of Canada into the pockets of Quebecers such that Charest was able to lower provincial income taxes. Duceppe voted for the billions-to-Quebec budget, Layton and Dion opposed it. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...me=&no_ads= Harper then called a $300 million election for October 2008 and with incredibly stupid timing decided to cut the $4 billion per year Canadian federal arts budget by a paltry 1% with cuts which had the greatest impact on Quebec, handing Duceppe political manna with a bogus arts funding issue. Harper's timing for the trivial arts cuts, given that he pulled the plug on his own government and chose the date of the election, could not have been dumber. Effectively, he completely wasted the billions annually that he threw at Quebec in 2007 at the expense of the rest of Canada. Let's look at your side-splitting claim that "Harper puts himself in positions where he comes out ahead no matter what the opposition does." Now that Ignatieff has replaced Dion (thanks entirely to Harper's stupidity in December) and CPC remains saddled with the nitwit Harper for at least one more election, here are the party standings in Quebec as of yesterday: Liberals 39% Bloc Quebecois 29% CPC 17% NDP 14% http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianp...JQi36UAZwZ1gQDw In the past 50 years, only one Conservative Prime Minister has won majorities. Brian Mulroney did so by winning in Quebec. Stephen Harper has lost the trust of most Quebecers just as past Liberal leaders lost the trust of most westerners. It's time for CPC to pull the plug on the incompetent Harper just as LPC pulled the plug on Dion. -
It's rather difficult to achieve that when you have a minority government. PM Harper discovered that when he attempted unsuccessfully to strip away the right of lesbians to marry in December, 2006.

Tory aide tried to scuttle Hanukah event, school says

And if it were a story which suggested that some Liberal had behaved inappropriately, would you also immediately assume that the story was not accurate? -
How fortunate that he never became Prime Minister.

What part of the story do you think is not true? -
I don't for one second think that all CPC supporters are neo-conservative religious right-wing fanatics. There's a range of views among CPC supporters. Many who oppose CPC erroneously attribute these values to all CPC supporters simply because Stephen Harper appears to be a neo-conservative religious right-wing fanatic and CPC supporters seem to be in no hurry to dump Harper for a leader with more centrist values.

To threaten a Jewish day school for allowing a local MP and Leader of the Opposition to participate in a candle-lighting ceremony at a Jewish school for the disabled - along with, it should be noted, Thornhill’s Conservative MP Peter Kent - is beyond reprehensible. Where is the outrage of the libertarians now? Where are those giants of free expression Ezra Levant, Mark Steyn and Jonathan Kay? Isn’t this exactly the kind of issue that they should be lining up to condemn?! Quote from: http://tcfsc.wordpress.com/2008/12/26/excu...s-for-a-moment/ CPC supporters remain remarkably silent on this issue. What a surprise. -
That must be why Stephen Harper, who for most of his life passionately opposed the Canada Health Act, miraculously flip-flopped and decided to support the Tommy Douglas plan: http://www.vivelecanada.ca/article/9191983...ks-medicare-law With miracles like this, we can only wonder on which of his absurd, long-held beliefs Harper will next flip-flop.

Tory MP Rod Brinooge abortion bill

Anti-choice Harper is not a complete fool. This won't happen as long as Harper holds only a minority of the seats. -
Who is Stephan Harper? I think you mean this man: http://misseye.files.wordpress.com/2007/08...phen-harper.jpg

Harper's Best Fiscal Stimulus Package: Cut Taxes
normanchateau replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Oh in that case it was a brilliant strategy for Harper to give Quebec another $3 billion per year from the EI surplus. Stupid, stupid Harper. -

That Georganna Burke tried to convince Marsden to run for CPC, and that CPC still employs Burke suggests that CPC has not learned much. -
Harper's Best Fiscal Stimulus Package: Cut Taxes
normanchateau replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I think most Canadians are aware that Harper has mismanaged the huge federal surplus he inherited from the Liberals. Among his more stupid acts was giving Quebec an extra $3 billion per year beginning in 2008. Note how Quebec has used the money: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...budget2007/home Stupid, stupid Harper. -

I wonder if CPC will fire Georganne Burke, promote her or merely hope that this story, like other CPC scandals, will die. What's clear from this thread is that no more than a couple of CPC supporters were bothered by Burke's offensive threats and would rather debate who's the best Catholic, Mel Gibson notwithstanding. Georganne Burke, incidentally, is the CPC organizer who tried to convince Rachel Marsden to run as a CPC MP in Toronto. Here's Marsden's response: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...me=&no_ads= And who's Rachel Marsden? http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...me=&no_ads= -
Top 5 Political Scandals of 2008
normanchateau replied to tamtam10's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The expert hired by Harper to analyze the tape in which Harper acknowledged "financial considerations" were made has contradicted Harper's own court testimony: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...me=&no_ads= But Harper not telling the truth is hardly newsworthy these days. -

If you don't hate Jews, why do you consistently make comments of the sort which appear on anti-Semitic websites? For example, in previous posts you claimed that Karl Marx was a Jew even though he was an atheist. You referred to Jews as a race even though Judaism is a religion. You refer in your posts to "Jewish Bolshevism", a pejorative anti-Semitic expression used by Hitler, the authors of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and numerous Holocaust Denial websites. It is a mystery to me why the moderator hasn't banned you for your persistent anti-Semitic comments. Perhaps the moderator is giving you the benefit of the doubt by assuming that your level of intelligence precludes you from realizing that your comments are anti-Semitic. -
The PM's Evolving Views on the Economy
normanchateau replied to ThatGuy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
So do you think Harper was a fool or merely lying as usual when he unequivocally ruled out a deficit on October 7th? -
In October as stocks tumbled, this idiot Harper claimed that it was a "buying opportunity". No wonder no one has ever hired Harper as either an economist or a financial consultant. No wonder he won't resign. He has no job to go to if he did and this is not a good time to become a car salesman. How dumb does he think Canadians are? It seems that Harper has been successful in convincing many Canadians that he is a fiscal conservative despite increasing government spending by a larger amount than any prime minister in the history of Canada. How dumb does her think Canadians are? It seems that some view his handout of $9 billion to Quebec as a good investment towards capturing a majority government.

Canadian Political Polls
normanchateau replied to Vancouver King's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Globe and Mail March 20, 2007 "Overall, Ottawa is increasing transfers to Quebec by a total of $9-billion over the next three years, as the cash increases from the current level of $13-billion a year to more than $16-billion in three years." Thank you Stephen Harper for not pandering to Quebec. The $3 billion a year we'll spend not pandering to Quebec in 2009 and 2010 will certainly save us from a deficit. What extraordinary financial mismanagement and reckless spending. Ignatieff can only pray that the financially incompetent Harper continues to lead CPC into the next election. Do CPC voters really believe that the $9billion Harper shamelessly threw at Quebec was a wise investment? If so, it explains why they won't dump the incompetent Harper. -
Maybe this is why Harper announced in October of this year that Canada will withdraw in 2011 whether the Taliban win or lose. Imagine if a Liberal Prime Minister had announced to the Taliban the exact date of departure of Canadian troops. Harper would have called him an idiot or worse. Why announce it to the Taliban in 2008 rather than 2009 or 2010? How does this help our troops? Harper's decision to cut-and-run from Afghanistan is reminiscent of his cowardly decision to run to the G-G to beg for permission to shut down his government until 2009.

Against the advice of his staff, Dion made the decision not to engage in the kind of negative advertising that CPC had long engaged in. It was a huge mistake. Let's hope Ignatieff doesn't make the same mistake.
