shoop You wrote- " Concurrent with the mean spirited attacks is the attempt to make Harper "look bad" by constantly comparing him to Bush." Liberal logic dictates this as they know no other way then to entwine linguistics and culture as a weapon to somehow convince others that it is only Canada in the positon to lead as a cultural multicultural king and prove that the U.S. has failed miserably in this area. Anyone who does not agree with Liberal ideology is labelled indifferent and attacked.

Has this country gone bananas? The Surpreme Court of Canada overturned a Quebec court of Appeals has overturned a decision that had barred a teenager from wearing a dagger known as a kirpan to school. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories A kirpan is a ceremonial dagger and is a symbol of POWER and FREEDOM OF SPIRIT. A Sikh may use it in SELF-DEFENSE or to protect a person in need. Some Sikhs choose to learn the art of GATKA. This is a martial art devised by the Sikh Gurus that uses a circular movement to effectively SWING a SWORD. This does not sound like a religious ornament to me and I would choose not to have my children continually exposed to a potentially violent weapon. Looking armed does not sit well with me. What's your take?

theloniusfleabag You wrote- " I suggest you reading Mein Kampf, if you haven't already done so." Seems Hitler facinates you. No, I have never read the book but am vaguely familiar with it's contents from an historical perspective only as I don't read hate literature. Sorry to disappoint you.

Melanie_ You wrote- " How do you attribute any of those gains to race? You could make that case that the culture of a society allows for advances in science, arts, or technology, but the races of the people living in that culture are not necessarily homogenous." When you broadly paint a picture of the West, America and the U.S. immediately stand out followed by White and Christian. This picture lately is reinforced almost daily, mainly by Arab countries. Now you should know as well as I do it is corporate America that is mostly responsible for success pertaining to scientific, technological, the arts, social development etc. and not the cultures. It is the cultures that follow willingly and eagerly. Again generally speaking America is viewed as primarily White but is also multicultural. But anyone with a PEA for a brain KNOWS other races (not necessarily homogenous)are automatically included within it's population and DO contribute in the same manner as the primary White race not necessarily homogenous but viewed that way by other countries who cannot understand how a country can be so successful not be racially homogenous.

betsy You wrote- " Yes. Claiming superiority over another race...that's what's bothering me about that article. It does remind one of hitler." Nonsense. Are you claiming that a certain race that makes very significant gains in scientific, technological and social areas should be void of any recogniton and should not stand out and be considered superior among other races?

August1991 You wrote- " Leafless rather than make broad generalizations without any evidence, I suggest you do a little research with an open mind." Your evidence concerning salaries of college grads as in comparison to high school grads was not what I getting at. It is a well known fact that many college grads and articles will attest to that the jobs you are talking about are far and few between. This is what I am talking about is the quanity of jobs that are not available to fill the demand. There are no statistics to confirm this. In this country it seems statistics are basically goverened by Statistics Canada who pretty well choose what statistics are available to the public in any given area in order to support views of the federal government. Do you have any evidence that contradicts anything or any statement that I have made?

geoffrey You wrote- " Most university grads arn't professionals. Professionals have skills, most university grads have knowledge." I did say "professional gategory" i.e. electrical engineer- pretty useless at first until experience is accumalted and then could end up in the $50k range like August was talking about. You wrote - " Monetarism has little to do with this. Come to Alberta tons of jobs, lots of money." Yeah, I heard about the $250K mobiles. I agree Alberta is in a class by itself. For now. You wrote- " I thought you were all for more money" I am just pointing out the existing disparity between private corporate and subsidized public jobs in most of the country including jobs in the artificial bilingualism area which also discriminate. You wrote- " They obviously exist. Many people create wealth on their own and do not rely on others to do it for them" I am not talking about private corporate Canada. I am talking about the SUV,s in government parking lots. Even the CBC has them. You wrote- " Corporate Canada pays considerably more than government." Thats not always the case. There are many jobs in private industry where people have a hard time putting food on the table.

August1991 You wrote- " I gave evidence on a different thread that the medium annual income of high school graduates in the U.S. was around $30,000 whereas the medium income of college graduates was around $50,000. leafless you make blanket statements that are not supported by evidence." Then I must ask you why must you go to a foreign country to obtain your evidence, can't find it Canada? Your fiqures college, university, graduates completing a four year course puts many into the professional category. But what you left out was trades and skilled technical positons some requiring little more than high school or via on the job training or apprenticeship programs with many of these salaries in excess of $50,000 per year. But where are these jobs in Canada as monetarism as left the corporate world in full control producing a mean and lean private job market sometimes with little security or benefits due to high level of competiton caused by globalization. For every higher income positon filled how many rejected applicants go home with nothing 50-100-500-1000? Where are all the secure higher paying jobs with an array of benefits that pay for all these SUV's you see driving around and allow the lucky ones to make long term committments on such worldly items as very expensive housing. Our three levels of government federal, provincial, municiple have created many well paid pampered jobs through a system that is financed by the tax payer and escapes control by corporate Canada. And who gets these jobs? As far as I can see all you have to in the case of federal employment is look in the federal telephone directory to see many of the same last names which tells you nepotism is alive and well. This produces in many cases a closed system within a system with the end result good government jobs are being subsidized by the tax payer who in many cases has no chance to land one of these jobs. Every year it is the same groups that start the chain reaction of demanding more money, better pensions etc. namely school teachers and postal workers the subsidized workers of Canada. Why should public service and associated government positons be in the positon to offer more money, security and an array of benefits while corporate Canada in most cases to-day have no way to compete in this area?

theloniusfleabag Yes, regarding unions like Ronald Reagan did back in 1981 when he fired 11,000 air-traffic controllers. http://www.natca.org/mediacenter/pressrele...tail.asp?id=164 But the problems associated with individual Canadian prosperity I think is being severley hampered by lack of federal, provincial insight and direction and catering to 'the old boys club' ideologies along with feeding aspects of multiculturalism. All of this distorts the real need of Canadians and cleary indicates buisness in the private sector is being severely hampered by it's inability to compete in many areas and this is indicated by the artificial price increase in a multitude of consumer goods and services. To resolve this issue is next to impossible without a total dissection of federal, provincial, municiple responsibilities which seem to be out of control within these governments as they are preoccupied with their own version of kingdom building and ignoring the real needs of the country regarding meaningful employment.

Monetarism= "The theory or practice of controlling the supply of money as the chief method of stabilizing the economy." The dominant financial communities of the world adapted the theory of Monetarism, which holds the money supply is the main determinant of economic activity. Monetarism contributed significantly to a paradigm shift in the locus of politcal power AWAY from democratic (public) exercise and open debate toward corporate (private) closed control. In Canada manufacturers are slow to upgrade and to compete have turned to alternate methods to squeese dollars from the Canadian public. This has resulted in more part time employment (at minimum wage), split shifts, working weekends etc. Ask anyone how many full time employment opputunities are offered by the private sector that don't dry up 6-months later or so. Could this be why the push is on for immigrants as native Canadians are reluctant to accept this kind of employment as private employers employ immigrants forcing Canadians to accept our conditons (private employers) or starve. This creates a housing shortage at the low end with many sons and daughters returning home to live with parents or other family members. A university degree to-day means you have a slightly better chance at a higher paying job similar to a chance in a lottery. Public service employees federal and provincial and municiple and unionized employees seem to be the only ones that escape the wrath of low wages and part time employment mostly at the expense of the public who finance their worldy desires and greed. Why does this employment discrimination exist? Why are the tables of fair and equal treatment so horribly tilted and why is this even accepted in favour of what can be expressed as 'mob rule' concerning unions? What can be done to create a decent living wage for everyone and stop the private sector from treating employees many like scum?

yorkman You wrote- " If anything it is the French speaking people of Eastern Ontario that are under threat in a sea of English" I think the argument here is how can a minority language have a monoply on a French only clinic in Ontario when clinics and hospitals are publicly funded mainly by the majority English tax payers of Ontario. Ontario is not 'officially bilingual' and bicultural policies are passe in favour of muticulturalism. How can you possibly support a single language French hospital when English is the language of commerce with French being a residential language. Are you aware people are losing their homes in Ontario due to high taxes? Do you actually believe the majority of francophones in Ontario CANNOT speak English? And if they can't what are they doing in a province that is not offically billingual. Don't you think they have a duty like they do in Quebec to become assimilated to the language of that province? Don't you think the English have a right to protect their language and jobs in Ontario like they do in Quebec? Why must Ontarians face the forces of a totalitarian federal governemt to provide bilingual services and give our jobs away on a basis of bilingualism when Quebec passes draconian laws to protect their language? -

I don't think anyone knows what the real truth is at this point. You also wrote- " Which is why we should have secure ports and a capable coast guard. Duh." Are you as naive as to believe the coast guard can actually protect all the coastline around the U.S. Duh- I don't think so. Just think of the successful drug scene never mind the terrorist. You also wrote - " What large scale? I didn't say large scale, I said slipping in terrorist in two's and three's not a whole boat load." Again are you naive as to think the U.S. currently is terrorist free? Do you not think that there could be 10- 20 100 -200- 500 etc. terrorist roaming the U.S. at any given time. Remember 9-11. No explosives or anything but small arms. To pull this type of event off successfully is the equivalent of winning a lottery. -

Mr. Harper's Honeymoon in Afghanistan
Leafless replied to garymorton's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This is almost funny. Here we have Mr.Harper who has been physically hiding from the Canadian press with parliament not even resumed and having secret talks and possibly making secret deals with Quebec about god knows what. But not concerned about making surprise copy cat visits to Afghanistan reminiscent of the surprise visits made by President George Bush and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to Iraq. But I do think our troops should have been returned home on the basis that they are ill equipped at this time to handle the spread of extreme violence from Iraq back to Afghanistan. Although I to think they should be fighting beside our allies I also think our military must be properly reconstructed to assume that role from the present role of peacekeepers. -
geoffrey You wrote- " If he's making the judgement purely on race, now that's another matter." Hilarious! It was loniusfleabag who falsely accused me of being a White supremist after reading the article concerning oppositon by a bunch of what can be properly described as mostly self-righteous non-taxpaying students who interpreted this conference as strictly White vs. Black conference which in fact requires proof to establish such a claim. When you speak of race colour is the most common way to distinguish a population of humans from other populations. But every race also includes social and cultural construction including language, religion, class, ideology and this is what we are talking about, the detrimental effect on an established country caused by the imposition of a race, (any colour even the same colour) concerning detrimental social and cultural aspects. I agree with Geoffrey when he says " Sadly it just turns out that most of these cultural inconsistancies is part of some ethnic mnority, so peole like me would be branded racist." Obviously people like theloniusfleabag who could be very well of another race and refuses to address the problem of foreign culture domination concering the detrimental aspects this causes to an established Canadian society and to concerned Canadians who want their culture to be prominent and respected. It is becoming crystal clear in Canada who really the intolerant are!
-
theloniusfleabag Race is an important aspect of individual and group identity. I suggest you do some serious reading on the fault lines that divide society whether you think they exist or not. Language, religion, class, ideolgy are prominent and divisive. Race and racial conflict are root causes of cultural conflict and exist right here in Canada as well as any other country that employ muticulturalism policies. To be overtaken by another culture based on language, religion, class or ideolgy can be just as destructive to the nation as an actual foreign invasion or producing the same results. I would be suspect of anyone objecting to addressing the problems of racial conflict within a civilized country in our case built on Canadian nationalism.

theloniusbag You wrote- " Indicates you are also a White supremacist. Just in case you didn't know." So I gather you find it racist for White America to be concerned about cultural control by a race other than White in America?

concerned citizen You wrote- " In fact this is the only French clinic in a town where approx. half the population has french as their mother tongue." It was reported by the Ottawa Citizen Fri. Feb. 24, 2006 Sec. D1 that your own city councillor Mark MacDonald who said "Cornwall is 30% French speaking" and that he visted this clinic in May 2004 and was told by centre employees they treat English speaking patients. I think the point is more than anything else, is does any group in Ontario have a monoply on a publicly tax payer funded clinic to pick and choose who they treat on a basis of language? Why is this clinic not forced to comply to (although very questionable and discriminatory) bilingual requirements like every major hospital in Ottawa is required to do? This is outright discrimination and focuses on the same level as tax payer funded French school boards while ignoring other cultures who desire the same benefits. If the French want their own school boards fine but they should be responsible for funding. You also wrote- " She had a cold for crying out loud. It wasn't like it was a life threating coniditon." What she had was a very bad cold put conservatively, one she could not shake. We have clinics where we are to and that's what they treat, relatively minor medical conditons with the more serious ones being farmed out to a major hospitals or specialists. -

Argus You wrote- " Cornwall is in Ontario. And it was a receptionist who refused treatment." Health Minister George Smitherman as already indicated in this thread did not specifically say this was a 'francophone only' clinic but said " The centre is focussed on the francophone population . Without it access to primary health care would be extremely difficult for most francophones in Cornwall ." In saying this is it to be implied that francophones do not have to learn English in Ontario. And if this is the case would this not suggest Ontario is 'officially bilingual' with all tax payers of Ontario footing the bill for French services even though Ontario is NOT 'offically bilingual'. Already in Ottawa ALL major hospitals are designated bilingual including the large Montfort hospital which specifically caters to francophones as well as being a teaching hospital that also allows doctors from Quebec to trian in all at the expebse of the Ontario tax payer. I see this as a delibrate ploy as an unjust transfer of power to create many francophone positons within the medical field in Ottawa and throughout the province of Ontario. But again I emphasis the fact most francophones are not truly francophones but bilingual persons with a French mother tongue taking advantage of francophone idenification thus falsley acquiring jobs and power under the title francophone, meaning French speaking only. In Quebec there are NO RIGHTS of any kind pertaining to the English language. -

Argus You wrote- " if only by a wink, a nudge and looking the other way, as they infiltrate this company and make use of it to aid them in getting terrorist and explosives into North America. This is the chief concern in both Canada and the U.S. And it is a legitimate concern." Then how come this already hasn't happened as Dubai already operates ports in New York, Baltimore, New Jersey, New Orleans and Philadelphia? You can also extend your logic to smuggling terrorist over in cargo holds of cruise ships, commercial air liners or just dropping them off by small watercraft along Atlantic or Pacific seaboard coastlines. To organize a large scale attack of what you are describing is next to impossible without detection and would more than likely if successful to any degree could guaratee waking up all those sleeping nukes. -

Sparhawk You wrote- " You would have a very hard time finding a job in many retail stores in Richmond if you don't speak a dialect of Chinese. Is this discrimination or buisnesses lookng after their clientel?" If there is no government involvement and this is a culture serving mainly the same culture, there are no laws concerning this type of patronage. But on the same token it does not say much for our federal government not doing a better job at assimilation or allowing much of a province to be dominated by a certain foreign culture. This is contributing to fractionization of Canadians into different cultural groups which is the root cause of many problems.
