Yes, I have read some of Hitler's writings. Hitler was not at all a "lefty" and you are sadly wrong if you think so. Hitler believed the #1 evil in the world was Soviet-style socialism, partly due to his belief that it was a way to concentrate power in the hands of Jews, but primarily because it's political theories were diametrically opposed to Hitler's corporatist beliefs. Fascism, as practiced by Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, etc., was not a leftist philosophy. If anything, Communists and Socialists were their biggest enemy. Hitler's main beef with western-style capitalism is that he believed it encouraged race mixing and the mongrelization of pure European blood. In modern political science, we look at the political compass in four dimensions. On complete state control of economic policy, Hitler and Stalin would have agreed 100%. The only area where they differ is on social issues, where Hitler's talk of the master race was far right and where Stalin's talk of complete economic equality was far left. Therefore, MB is right that Hitler was a socialist if you are only looking at economic policy.

Democrat does not equal liberal. Duh. Democrat=Liberal in some areas, Conservative in other areas. Republican=Liberal in some areas, Conservative in other areas. Obviously, this mean isn't really a Democrat. If you read Liam's point, I think you'd realize what is going on here.

On national unity, the one thing I'll give Trudeau was that he called for a strong government and no special/unequal status for any province or territory. Giving Quebec the right to, for example, set its own immigration policy is, in and of itself, a violation of Canadian sovereignty. And what about the fact that French speakers from Morocco pay less to study in a university in Hull than a resident of Ottawa. As far as I'm concerned, Quebec, in many aspects, has already separated. There is already an unequal partnership in Canada.

The way I learned it in Canadian history class was that Americans have the Revolution/Foundations of Presidential Democracy and we have Heritage Minutes that simplify history in an attempt to unify Canadians.

No intelligent people read the Sun It matters little what you're opinion of them is. I see a lot of smart people buying it at work. And it has national reach. It is where a LOT of Canadians get thier news and opinion, and it's riddled with rightwing lies. Their stupidity is not really the rest of our responsibility. Real intelligent people would find the Sun horribly biased, full of irrelevant stories (and sunshine girls) and completely unstimulating intellectually. Apparently, you might just be one of those intelligent people. I like Sunshine girls...

This thread lost all credibility when it referred to the U.S. acts as aggression. Canada is in Afghanistan to help the Americans build a democratic country and topple a corrupt anti-western government. Canada can't sit back and promote peace unless there is peace in Afghanistan. There won't be peace in Afghanistan until the U.S. and Canada work our asses off to ensure we build a strong Afghani democracy.

I especially agree with the second point you made, Canadian culture is basically just trying to seperate ourselves from the Americans. Logical maybe, at one point neccessary for survival surely, but nowadays what real purpose does it serve? Other than to make people think that if we hold our noses, we must be better liked abroad than the US. Lol at the last line.. no no your definetly Canadian.. but what that means.. who knows. You see uOttawaman, compassionate conservatism is what it's all about (that's why the crime rate in my nation is so low..."progressive social policies in education and welfare.") You are gonna laugh at this.. my nation went from "Scandanavian Liberal Paradise" to "Capitalizt" with a "z". Must be the influence of you cons on this forum... LOL.. aww crap.. I just checked it now.. I now preside over a 'Capitalist Paradise" . Times, they are a changing. LOL!!! We've converted another one...

Quebec has never been a multicultural society. I used to LMAO when Chretien talked about "Canada's cultural mosaic" vs. the hardcore "everybody's all-American" U.S. melting pot. It is not a black and white issue and it is not so different in either country (for the record, I think both systems suck). But in Quebec, society is staunchly French and Quebec is most certainly a melting pot before anything else. Not only must Quebec approve your immigration application before the federal CIC looks at it, you had better speak French and adopt Quebec values or you're not going to be approved. Just another instance of the "two gaps" which are still very divided. The one thing I'll give our GG is that she's right that multiculturalism is a bunch of BS.

Liberal teacher to students: Hate America!
tml12 replied to Montgomery Burns's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
His statement is accurate: capitalism has nothing to do with compassion - it is all about greed. Societies that adopt capitalism as the primary basis for their economic system tend to be wealthier and do a better job of helping people that need help, however. this compassion does not happen because of capitalism. It happens because the people in the society have values other than the self-centered greed that is necessary for capitalism to work. In others words, the most compassionate societies are those with a free economic system but balanced with some level of social democratic values. Your propaganda is tiresome. This guy points out the blatant hypocrisy in US foreign policy and you claim he is anti-America. The neo-cons do not speak for America - they speak for one particular slice of America and disagreeing with them does not make someone anti-America. Capitalism, as interpreted by its father, Adam Smith, was to be a free economic system combined with "good Christian values." -

You got it...I have never watched them in my life. And while I am no fan of Bush or Streisand, even you have to admit MB's post was funny...

There never really was a Canadian identity beside Liberal myths of bilingualism, kinder nation, etc. Is there a Canadian identity aside from our morbid and ridiculous obsession with not being American? Probably not. But after all, I voted Conservative so I'm not really Canadian, right?

Klein Is Violating The Canada Health Act
tml12 replied to tml12's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yeah, anyone who would throw a book at a young girl just deserves all the support in the world! He wasn't throwing it at her you fool. Yeah: you must have got that confused with the time he threw money at the homeless people in a fit of drunken pique. In Alberta, there is a rumour that Klein can run this country half drunk better than the Liberal elite in Ottawa. I second that. -
I second that. I don't really think it has gotten THAT bad on the board.

Liberal teacher to students: Hate America!
tml12 replied to Montgomery Burns's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Well depends on who decides what he is 'teaching'. It is clear that right types have jumped on this case because it feeds the persecution complex that many seem to have. However, if you actually listen to the tape without ideological blinders you would hear a teacher challenging his students to question authority and not take what the politicians so for granted. IMV that kind of teaching is extremely good. If all he was doing was teaching kids to challenge authority, that would be OK. How can I listen to the tape without ideological blinders? The tape is of a speech that is, in and of itself, ideologically blinded against the right-wing. -

Where do we draw the "tolerance line"?
tml12 replied to JerrySeinfeld's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I chose the latter option but in all seriousness it is also a conundrum for right-wing guys too. I am no fan of "PC" and I support all Muslims and gays who live in this country call themselves "Canadian" before they ask for a special label. -
Potential Liberal leadership candidates test support

Belinda leading the Liberals would be the best thing possible for the Tories and NDP. Of course it would, she's Paul Martin in a cocktail dress. Ya right TML.. I think you need glasses. She clearly doesn't have jowels. Glad you put some thought into that response... -
I am constantly amazed at how many "righties" get their news from Fox. I get my news from Al-Jazeera Oh man...oh man...

Al Gore attacks new, 'ultra-conservative' Canadian PM
tml12 replied to Shady's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Teddy Ballgame, As a conservative I have some issues with your argument: "If one examines carefully the most recent platforms of the US Democratic Party (for the 2004 election) and the Canadian Conservative Party (for the 2006 election), there is little doubt that our CPC would be at least slightly leftward of the Democrats." That's just it...the PLATFORM! Because universal health care is one of the myths of Canada (it hasn't been universal in a very long time...we have tons of private health care all over the place) the CPC must "pledge" to keep it "universal." In reality, most Conservatives understand the reality of the situation and will hopefully allow more privatization and recognize the beneifts of a two-tier system. As for the Dems, most support more government administration in U.S. health care. Hillary even supports complete universal health care (remember she led the crusade in 1994). "Our CPC explicitly endorses a one tier socialized health care system and implicitly endorses much more generous welfare and unemployment and public pension benefits, a significantly higher level of taxation and greater level of government intervention in the economy, many more and much better paid, perked and pensioned public servants, and a much less robust defence capablity and aggressive military posture than Americans would ever let the Democrats try to foist on them. And this doesn't even take into consideration such hot button issues as same sex marriage, decriminaliztion of marijuana, the abolition of capital punishment, official multi-culturalism, the world's most permissive immigration and refugee systems, etc., etc." The CPC had to go NDP light to suck up to lazy Ontario government sycophants. No way in hell a majority CPC supports this stuff. As for the Dems, a Democrat President and a Democrat government are going to be way left of the CPC. Most Dems support decriminalization of marijuana, the CPC doesn't. The CPC is slightly left of the mainstream U.S. Republican Party but way right of the Dems. You're confusing the CPC backed up by the NDP/Liberals in a minority situation with the true right-wing Reform elements of the party. "Hopefully, some of these more extreme left wing approaches and concomittant harebrained policies will be gradually modified and moderated over time after the CPC forms a majority government about two years from now and as it succeeds in forging what will amount to a new progressive conservative style co-alition to replace the now financially, morally and politically bankrupt Liberal co-alition." We need a real right-wing party, not a PC Liberal/NDP lite party. If we've got to run left of the Dems to govern like the Republicans, then so be it. Seems we've fooled a bit of people. "But for now, the CPC is officially to the left of both US parties, even Hysterical Harridan Hillary's misguided Democrats." Platform-wise, yes. In reality, no. -
