The Republican leadership is entirely anti-democratic, and some of the rank-and-file-- even on this forum-- are openly calling for an end to democracy and a transition to dictatorship. It feel like we're far more likely to cease living in a democracy than we are to see the end of the Republican cult.

It's a very strange--and false--impulse to assume one person would ignore another simply because they were challenged or uncomfortable or are for some other reason "hiding." Go read a book. The "American experiment" refers to the creation of a constitutional democracy, a government of, by and for the people--the first of its kind in the world.
