Dougie feels jilted... He's breaking up with Canada. I'm disillusioned too, I see the brainwashing... So I'm just having a more realistic relationship with her... I see her flaws now. But she's pretty good... not as good as she thinks she is... but pretty good... far from a lost cause. Canada has been slack on military commitments definitely. Hate speech and Charter of Rights are concessions to the progressive morality patrols... definite annoyances.... The press is free... government doesn't control the press... we have CBC... much like NPR... don't overstate it. Elections are free... the conservatives could easily have won... Sheer is just weak. Canada is doing fine. Could it be doing better... sure... no reason for hysteria.

Yours sounds like a reverse fantasy to me. Congress is a shit show.... everybody knows it... bought and paid for... Congress jumping up and functionally responding to climate change with infrastructure development is a laughable fantasy. So sign of such a capacity to cooperate anywhere in sight.

There may or may not have been a problem with Bill Peters... I suspect he was an asshat... but that's part of the problem... how many people really know this person. But Twitter justice has been served... And the mob feels its power. This is not a pure unalloyed good that has been unleashed... The players aren't saying hockey is toxic. Some players are complaining about some coaches... And they found a few "woke" players that want to throw the whole sport under the bus.... 10% of Canadian families are putting their kids in hockey... sounds about right. We have lots of sports to choose from. It is a free country.

Sure... but the fault lines are mostly no longer gendered. Now the fault lines are more regional and urban vs rural and educated vs less educated. The universities have largely been captured by the left. And these value systems are influencing parenting.... the left adopting "helicopter" parenting vs the "free range" parenting of the right... Two totally separate cultures are emerging.... and this is happening internationally...; fracturing families and communities. Strange times indeed.

Progressives do not value healthy competition and struggle. They are overprotective and foster hostile dependence. They don't allow enough autonomy and want to solve problems for perceived "victims" on their behalf. They try to speak for "victims" and the "victims" themselves feel patronized and resent the intrusion in their affairs.

Conservatives undervalue the losers in the industrial economy. The losers need a social safety net, otherwise they can't surf the downturns in the industrial economy. The result is addiction and fall out from society. Conservatives tend to blame and shame the losers.

Both sides feel their morals are superior. The truth is that both sides represent values that need to exist in harmony. Maternal or "feminine" instincts need to be balanced by Paternal or "masculine" instincts. Each in isolation is problematic. And hence why "transgender" issues are the ultimate fault line.

Sure I have. His book "The Righteous Mind" was hugely influential to me. Helped me understand the core differences in moral instincts between right and left. The left is focussed on "avoiding harm" and protecting "victims"... basically maternal or "feminine" instincts. The right is focussed on "loyalty" and avoiding "free riders"... essentially paternal or "masculine" instincts... This makes so much sense.

Very interesting.... A bunch of us recent travellers to your site are the survivors of the destruction of a centrist forum. The Dan Carlin forum... Dan Carlin made his mark as a history podcaster, but created a current events podcast and was trying to unite left and right to create a centrist force that might brainstorm a solution to US problems. Such an idealist. Then Donald Trump showed up on the scene and Dan Carlin folded like a house of cards.... actually unplugged his forum... and his current events podcast... he was troubled by all the "hate". He retreated to his history podcast and puts out a podcast a year.... Trump deranged him. Us hardy travellers ended up in a life raft forum.... some rich guy who thought he might make it in US politics... his forum has dwindled.... still a handful of eclectic right wingers. Just for the record, I am of the Left... and this shit makes me angry. I am angry at the Left for succumbing to this moral theocracy and its digital witch hunts and twitter mobs. What disturbs me is when the medical system or the dominant culture takes the lead in "recommending" biologically intrusive interventions with long lasting consequences in children and teenagers.... Children and teenagers are very easily influenced by cultural factors.... and the culture is broadcasting these forms of medical interventions as the solution to a certain form of unhappiness. Add to this the cultural bias that we as parents are charged with our children's happiness and that if they are unhappy WE have done something wrong... parents are pressured to "solve" the unhappiness.... DO SOMETHING! These interventions fit the bill and the waitlists for them are getting long. We are in bizarre territory.

So I am a psychiatrist who works mostly with teenagers. I have also worked for years in the area of eating disorders which include a symptom called "body dysmorphia". Of course in the treatment of body dysmorphia we have found surgery to be completely ineffective. So when I started working with teens with "gender dysphoria", I naturally took the same tack with good effect. I never promoted body corrective surgery to address the problem and I received good feedback from my patients. We worked through the issues underlying the dysphoria as best we could seeking self acceptance and ways of authentic self expression... in effect what every human is looking for. But things have changed. I am now a fish swimming against a current... I still firmly believe that going to war with your own body is largely unadvisable... but going to war with my patients and their families that have chosen this path with the blessing of the medical system is also a folly. The medical system of course has a bias towards biologically trying to correct emotional and spiritual problems... this is almost always at best a form of Band-Aid... but then Band-aids serve their purpose...

Sounds like you are playing the tune of "toxic masculinity". Hockey is "toxic"? Maybe there are some coaches that players don't like... just like there are teachers students don't like and bosses that employees don't like. Does this make school toxic, the workplace toxic or a hockey team toxic? Sometimes... sometimes not. Sometimes students, players and employees are just whining... and sometimes there is a serious problem with leadership. 90% of families probably don't think yoga is fun, or figure skating is fun or skiing is fun either. This argument really makes me laugh! You really are gathering a bunch of smoke in your hands and trying to pin it to the wall... to make a case for "toxic" hockey culture. Calling Hockey or Masculinity toxic... are sweeping generalizations made only by simple minded people.

There is racism. And there is accusing people of racism. You are pimping your race war with the second of these. Some of us are trying to think clearly about the massing twitter mobs... who are going to do more harm than good with their digital torches and pitchforks. As for the actual racists... they are shitty of course.... don't call people monkeys and throw bananas at them... that's ignorant... I read your article... To sum up: There are some racist people who watch and play hockey. Wow. Imagine that. There are racist people doing lots of things. That doesn't make most hockey players or fans racist. Making sweeping statements about hockey is completely absurd. The incident with Aliu 10 years ago seems like a weird racist rant about hip hop music... Not really grounds for being fired on that incident alone. Seems to me the allegation of Mikal Jordan that Peters kicked and hit him is the more serious one... and that has zero to do with racism.
