If younger people get out and vote in greater numbers, that would generally work for the Liberals/NDP more than Conservatives. I was talking to someone who has worked campaigns for years, and he said he's never seen such busy advance polls. He still thinks it'll be close, though.

Fortunately for Conservatives, they can ignore this because it comes from someone in Academia who is likely to know what he's talking about.

Yes, it did take all of five minutes just now. Why, are you trying to suggest something here? If so, please be a little more direct. -
I'm glad you could work it out. I'm lucky in that my ABC and my (current) ideological preference are aligned.

Well, if a guy goes to a doctor and asks for some help to increase the size of his perfectly average and perfectly working "manhood", and his doctor says "Why, yes, that IS remarkably small" and sends him off to here or here, that would be unhelpful, unsupportive and possibly quite harmful to the man in question. Instead, the doctor should tell the guy he's got a perfectly fine penis, and give him this information. That would be supportive and helpful. -
Buffett doesn't think that's true ""The rich are always going to say that, you know, just give us more money and we'll go out and spend more and then it will all trickle down to the rest of you," Warren Buffett, the world's third wealthiest person, recently told ABC News' Christiane Amanpour: "But that has not worked the last 10 years, and I hope the American public is catching on." Buffet joined more than 40 of the nation's millionaires -- part of a group called Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength -- to ask President Obama to discontinue Bush's tax breaks for the rich."

I agree that you can. I disagree that offering a person a "cure" for a condition that is normal is support. -
That's right, only Argus, Conservative Extraordinaire, can pick nits to deny/obfuscate/mislead/revise facts -- all in defense of Harper. No wonder people think Conservative supporters come from the lower end of the intelligence scale.

Actually, it's getting to the point where almost anyone can be forbidden to speak, right or left. That's sad, isn't it?

Michael, I do, personally, condemn *religion*, though not people who choose to have faith; for the most part they're decent people. But I think they'd be decent people even without their particular faith. In any case, whether it's Catholic or non-Catholic, I do not see how 'offering cures' to, or demanding celibacy of homosexuals is supportive of their sexual orientation. -

Given the overwhelming scientific evidence that being gay is NOT a choice, I think the compassionate and supportive thing to do would be to say "Yes, you are gay and that's ok". NOT, "Oh, you're gay? Yes, that is unfortunate. But we can help - try out these unproven conversion therapies; you'll be fine". But yeah, Christians aren't big on scientific evidence if it contradicts their interpretation of the bible. Promoting a 'cure' isn't offering support. How is "demanding celibacy" not denying sexuality, whether heterosexual or gay? Anyway, demanding celibacy has been shown to be remarkably unsuccessful. You'd think they'd have noticed by now. -
First day of advance polls show higher turnout that previous years - 26% higher than 2011 and 90% higher than 2008. At the poll I scrutinized yesterday, the numbers were higher than Friday.

I like that you care so much.

It seems to me if they 'cared' about the people, they'd accept them for who they are instead of trying to change them. One of the most heartbreaking stories I ever read was about a gay man who wanted to be a priest. He went through hell for years, trying to deny himself. He put his wife through hell because she knew something was wrong, but not what. When he did finally come out, I imagine his kids were shocked and hurt too. Denying people their sexual orientation isn't 'caring' about them. -
Do you know all the people who signed that list?

Not smarter; more informed. More tolerant. More ability to employ some critical thinking skills where needed. Many non-academics are smart enough, but don't necessarily think all that well.

Strategic Voting - It needs to be done
dialamah replied to marcus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
What if 30% of the population planned to vote strategically? Could 80,000 targeted votes sway an election? -
Another small lapse in ethics ... "Bernd Walter, who heads the B.C. Review Board that handles Schoenborn’s file, called Harper’s statements “either deliberately misleading or woefully misinformed.” “I would suggest that the prime minister ... (has) never demonstrated any sound or deep understanding of how the legal system works,” he said. Research paid for by his own government doesn’t support Harper’s position and instead the ad will only further stigmatize the mentally ill, he added."

Perhaps they inadvertently used a panel of blind people for their focus group?

The Conservatives did in 2008, when they decided to create a policy banning the niqab for citizenship ceremony, although for years before that it hadn't been an issue. Ishaq took them to court over it in 2011; Cons fought it twice in court, and after losing began talking about making laws to ban it. The conservatives made it an issue.

Strategic Voting - It needs to be done
dialamah replied to marcus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I know its barely possible that a Liberal government will implement an electoral reform, based on what would be most fair for Canadians. Heresy to even suggest a political party might take action that may not benefit them .... What makes me put forth this outrageous suggestion? Trudeau exhorting young people to vote, even if they don't vote Liberal, just get out and vote, combined with his youth advocacy involvement prior to becoming a politician. Yeah, call me naive and gullible.
