The purpose or logic behind mass shootings.
dialamah replied to Argus's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Why aren't shooters responsible for their reactions? Why do they want to blame someone else for their murderous rampages? I though conservatives were all about taking personal responsibility? -
Hijab-wearing woman with PhD also an Olympic weightlifter.

I've worn Muslim dress in hot weather and found it significantly warmer than what I normally wear. I can't imagine how much warmer adding a niqab would have been. Consider also that many of these outfits are black, a color that attracts heat. If a Muslim woman were dressing to increase comfort, than light colored apparel would be chosen over dark colored clothing when it's hot. I agree that a certain amount of acclimation occurs and that fabrics and style makes a difference in terms of comfort, but honestly your explanation sounds like it's coming from someone who has never worn shorts and light shirt, and/or never worn a burka.

The purpose or logic behind mass shootings.
dialamah replied to Argus's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I think the logic is more along the lines of "My life and death will have been in service to a higher cause", whether that cause is protest against immigration, Muslims, abortion, progressive policies, inaction on climate change or whatever. -
That's an interesting question. The Muslim husbands I've seen wouldn't have a problem with it. But I've only seen about half-a-dozen in action, so it's way too anecdotal to be of any use.

The purpose or logic behind mass shootings.
dialamah replied to Argus's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
To paraphrase a conservative commentator on Reddit: the manifesto made it clear that the primary driver of this individual was from Nationalistic, White Supremacist sentiment, and that Republicans are better than Democrats. The shooter's comments on UBI and universal healthcare were not supportive, but rather lamenting their necessity due to immigration. Just like ideologies such as Marxism, Communism is evil, so is White Nationalism. Using "whatabout" fallacies to minimize his crime is wrong. This tragedy was caused by White Nationalism, just as communism and militant Islam has caused innumerable tragedies. I thought this guy made excellent points, so much so that I spent real money to give him an award. -
In France, the person doing the forcing of the Burka wearing would be fined a considerable amount, which I prefer over fining the woman herself. But in either case, if a woman can't go in public either with or without a burka, how would authorities ever know?

The purpose or logic behind mass shootings.
dialamah replied to Argus's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
The person doing the shooting always has a reason and logic behind it, even though it makes no sense to most of us. We see it every day in less deadly ways - flat-earthers, anti-vaxxers, various conspiracy theories about illuminati, 9/11 as an inside job, Area 51, Clinton as a child sex trafficker or Planned Parenthood selling aborted baby organs. One might as well ask what is the logic behind evangelical Christians supporting a president who is clearly a liar, an adulterer and a fraudster. It makes perfect and logical sense to them and no sense to anyone else. -
The purpose or logic behind mass shootings.

Apparently not. Research has found no correlation between violent video games and aggression, and a minority of mass shooters play violent video games. Experts say there is little evidence linking video games to violence, and ample evidence to the contrary. Researchers at Oxford University earlier this year found that there was no correlation between the time spent playing video games and aggressive behavior in young people. Even after a 2004 report conductedby the Secret Service and the Education Department found that only 12 percent of perpetrators in more than three dozen school shootings showed an interest in violent video games, lawmakers and public figures continued to blame the industry. Capitalism strikes again, as Western retailers begin selling hijabs and "modest" clothing. And who could blame them? Muslim consumers spent an estimated $264 billion on apparel in 2016. The article suggests these companies are also taking a political stand against Trump's rhetoric, but I disagree. I think it's all about the money.

21 year old White Male kills 20, leaves 26 injured in El Paso today. Social media posts suggests he may have been a Trump supporter, but no motive has been determined yet.

Free speech only refers to a person's ability to speak out against government without being censored or punished by that government. There is no right to say whatever the heck you want wherever you want, without consequences. Yes, organizations can dictate, to an extent, how employees dress. But there are limits to that, and in our country at least, it used to be that religious freedom trumped an organization's right to dictate dress. And these laws, intended to put, at most, a few thousand Muslim women in their place, also affects Jews and Sikhs and probably others as well, assuming they are enforced equitably. In France, it's not just government offices, it's in public. In Holland, it's not just Government workers, but people going into government facilities - such as police stations, or wanting to ride public transit. It's not like you and others here in Canada wouldn't like to see similar bans so that burkas were never seen in Canada. You somehow think that's going to "help" these women, or "save" Canadian culture, which isn't even at risk from Burka wearing women, or even turbaned Sikhs. What is putting Canadian culture at risk is seeking to limit the freedoms of individuals practicing their faith in a way conservatives don't like.

From Media Bias Fact Check. CIS.ORG - Questionnable source. A questionable source exhibits one or more of the following: extreme bias, consistent promotion of propaganda/conspiracies, poor or no sourcing to credible information, a complete lack of transparency and/or is fake news. Fake News is the deliberate attempt to publish hoaxes and/or disinformation for the purpose of profit or influence. NET NEWS LEDGER - Right Bias. These media sources are moderately to strongly biased toward conservative causes through story selection and/or political affiliation. They may utilize strong loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes), publish misleading reports and omit reporting of information that may damage conservative causes. Your last link wasn't found, but no doubt it's equally "reliable/honest." I know you don't care Scribblet - you only want info that supports your world view, facts be damned.

That was a blog post about another blog post. I would tell the first blogger that free speech is worth fighting for. Along with freedom of religious expression, even if that freedom means wearing ridiculous outfits. You mean those people who are all gung ho about enforcing dress codes on religious people and binary gender norms on everyone?

Ok. If we're going to insult each other ... conservatives are regressive racists who believe everyone must conform to their notion of right and wrong, or be severely punished. The rights of the individual must be subsumed to the dictates of the State, society must favor the Christian White above all others, and force is justified to ensure the protection and favoritism if the White Christian class.

Yes, the people who are most likely to agree enough and support our progressive Western values. Yes there is a limit - 300,000 or so. Up about 50,000 from Conservative goverment levels. Perhaps the "conversation" could happen if conservatives didn't always frame it as liberals want open borders, liberals don't care about Canada, liberals love terrorists. See above. Also our system of approving immigrants is based on age and employability, and it's considered one of the most successful in the works. Perhaps the conversation could happen if conservatives actually paid attention to how the immigration system works instead of claiming it's a failure and using anomalies to "prove" it.

You sound just like Neo Nazi leader, Andrew Anglin. No wonder you don't think Geert Wilder is alt-right.

Death of personal freedoms. Have tried to find out how "successful" these bans are in terms of reducing extremist actions or persuading people not to wear them, but can't find information.either way. France implemented their ban in 2010, extremists use these bans as recruitment tools and France seems one of the hardest hit Western countries for terror activity, but 'correlation is not causation'. Have seen one article.saying that women who'd wear a burka are simply staying home in France, but there was no backup so who knows? It'll probably be 50 years after Islam-hate has subsided before all the events are tied together, when historians look back and trace the way in which Western democratic society chose oppression over tolerance. Kinda like Germany and Jews, Canada and Japanese in second world war, but on a more global scale. Of course at some point we'll be appalled and vow to never do it again, enlightened governments will apologize to descendants of our victims .. and then after a while another group will be targeted as bogeyman.

Dutch Burka Ban Unworkable Ski masks, full face helmets, burkas banned in public buildings and public transportation. Part of Government's attempt to mollify the far right, led by Geert Wilder. Police say enforcing the ban is not a high priority and it will take at least 30 minutes to respond to calls, if thwy can make it at all. Police will not enforce ban at police stations because they don't want to discourage women from reporting crime. Transportation officials won't prevent women from boarding vehicles because they can't wait for police backup. Somebody has already said they'll pay for any fines assessed against Muslim women. All of this for about 100 full time Burka wearers.

Are humans really responsible for climate change?
dialamah replied to Canuck100's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
We did know about it when we were kids. Concern about environmental impact of chemicals and garbage has been around since I was in grade school. But we (me included) didn't really pay attention and here we are. Rate of population growth is declining as a result of increasing education and affluence around the world and we'll plateau at around 9 billion in about 50 years. Or we'll all be dying from climate change. Either easy, birth control isn't needed. -
No one that you know. I have never seen that, but I've heard it claimed many times. In the meantime, people have applauded Bissonnette and the NZ Killer among others. The NZ killer paid homage to Bissonnette as he carried out his massacre. Andrew Anglin* said of Tarrant: This dude is already a folk hero to so many, and we have to agree that what he did was indisputably heroic in the classical sense. It is not an uncommon thing for heroes to act foolishly. The odds are people are going to crowdfund statues and memorials in honor of this guy. This dude is funny and joking around, which makes him seem far more funny and personable than the death cult invaders that he is slaughtering. He wasn't the only one of course, there are plenty of similar comments spread on social media when some alt-right "lone wolf" kills Blacks, Jews, Muslims. The White Nationalist website "Blood and Honor" says about Combat18 that they are specially honored for their commitment to the cause; they might not be offering virgins, but these guys know that they're heroes to the "movement" to attain "purity" in Western countries. Most of us, including Muslins, condemn terrorists. Most of us, including Muslims, condemn people who'd celebrate or applaud those terrorists. *Andrew Anglin - Daily Stormer website.

Are humans really responsible for climate change?

Which is also how I came to the conclusion that a couple extra bucks on a tank of gas wasn't any more inconvenient than bringing reusable bags and go-cups to grocery stores and coffee shops. No individual is killing the planet by taking a winter vacation or warming their homes in the winter. It's millions or billions of us doing so, without any thought or care about the impact of all of us - death by a billion cuts, so to speak. Perhaps the same number adjusting their habits by a little bit would mean life by a billion small changes. Like I said - research led me to believe this was one of the ways which can help. What is your reason for calling it garbage? -

One car, got rid of the other one, take transit to/from work and save car for dog-related tasks and grocery shopping. Minimal meat, very little prepackaged foods or eating out. Flown out of country twice in 60+ years, and maybe 3 times in-country. Take bus to visit kids out of town, about 90% of my clothes are second hand. Recycle everything I can. I don't understand why you insist on going to extremes, btw. It's not a choice between having a mansion and 12 gas-guzzling trucks or shivering in a cave and hunting food with a spear while wearing a loincloth. It's making choices to consume less, daily, and being willing to pay a couple of bucks on a tank of gas because carbon taxes reduce carbon use. Its maybe deciding to get that electric vehicle next time you buy a new car, or deciding to let your lawn go brown during the summer. There are lots of choices people can make and one "green" choice tends to lead to more. Framing a bit of adjustment to reduce your personal carbon footprint as unendurable hardship that "won't do any good" is pointless and dishonest. I got many of my ideas from climate scientists who have made changes in their own life. Government is not a particularly good leader for this, imo, though I much prefer Canada's stance over Trump's. -
Maybe he is. Maybe he's a Christian. Maybe he's just nuts. But based on the information in the linked story, you are drawing conclusions based entirely on your own biases and not on any provided facts. How does that demonstrate any logic, something you often crow about having?
