Every PM has had the right to a personal life and the right to travel outside of Ottawa for non-business reasons. The position demands that his personal life be subject to security. It is a left wing thing because it only matters when the left have lost an election. They feign indignation to the election results, the electoral system, and even the right for the PM to have a life when things don't go their way. It's pathetic. How do you think PMs visit their families? Do you think they hitchhike across Canada to save the taxpayer money? This is a ridiculous non-story and if you can't see that, you are a lefty.

PMs have the freedom to have lives too. He makes over 300k last I checked, he should be able to attend an out-of-town hockey game on that salary. If Harper wants to go to a game in Boston but security requirements forbid him from travelling commercially, then he has to take the private jet. Don't be bitter because you're not important enough to be forbidden from flying commercial airlines.

Are you lefties actually suggesting that if the Prime Minister of a top 15 economy in the world wants to attend a hockey game, he should take a commercial airline? What a non-story, the prime minister is forbidden from using commercial airlines, he isn't forbidden from having a life.

Well this is pretty far out there in terms of hypotheticals, but what makes you think the rest of the world wouldn't come to the aid of Canada? Not relying on American production of weaponry would at least allow Canada to have a reasonable foundation for manufacturing the necessary weaponry in a prolonged war of attrition. Furthermore, this type of war isn't imminent at all, so this is a hypothetical situation maybe a century from now. There is plenty of time to develop an entire robust defense industry and not just "a few ships".

I'm pretty sure that this is still a new "phase" of the economic action plan. There is additional spending in this budget in winding down these programs. The infrastructure expenditures are certainly not complete. And remember that this budget was created and designed to appease opposition parties. There were only minor tweaks to the original budget that was rejected by the opposition. All in all, the big cuts will be coming in future budgets now that the government doesn't have to placate the opposition to maintain power. The government wasn't about to make snap wholesale changes to a budget it had just tabled. A lot of research and taxpayer's money went into developing the 2011 budgetary plan. The government now has plenty of time and the requisite power to find the "targeted savings" it had promised.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't most of the deficit related to spending initiatives and the Economic Action Plan for the recession? I think it was 40 billion spent on stimulus in 2009, and the stimulus has been mostly ongoing. I don't see why these spending initiatives couldn't be scaled back as we come out of the recession. Especially considering the spending initiatives were concessions made by a minority government.

Taxpayers are getting something... their money back. But you're right that the entitled welfare nation of the great Canadian hero Brigette Depape isn't getting anything for OUR money.

There are strong arguments for subsidizing a defense industry. What if China became the country with the comparative advantage in defense production? Free trade would dictate that we import all our arms from China and trade them oil and natural resources. That's pretty sweet in theory until China decides it just wants to take our natural resources rather than trade arms for them.

We should rebel with great acts of civil disobedience to support the will of the people of a province in which arguably 40%+ of the population, largely concentrated in and around Quebec City, is separatist. To hell with the fact that conservatives won 48% of the vote outside of Quebec compared to 26.6% for the ndp and 20.7% for the liberals. True democracy can only be reflected by the will of the separatists!! Lets bring in PR so that we can revive the BQ and next election we can give a separatist party 10% of the seats in parliament to hold the governing party hostage to the threat of separation!
