  1. Income inquality hinders economic recovery and growth. Can't be much clearer than that. Turns out that by conducting a war on unions and middle class workers, the wealthy were chewing off their own feet. "Stupid is as stupid does."
  2. http://www.aei.org/article/104156 Ahhh ... can't tax the rich more cos they'll just lie about it anyway ... cheat on their taxes. Mhmm ... so we can't catch the criminals or tax them. So why bother. Great argument. And we're supposed to trust people like this? I don't think so.
  3. How did George Bush get in here? And what's all the yammering for?
  4. Suggestions are welcome of course. When the police are beating on people it's hard to think calmly I'm sure. This one's good “Banks got bailed out, you got sold out!”
  5. http://bostonreview.net/BR36.5/jeanne_mansfield_occupy_wall_street.php @citizenx re bush_cheney, american woman... Somedays all ya can do is roll yer eyes.
  6. Well the Wall Street media is reporting. http://www.thestreet.mobi/story/11259491/1/wall-street-protest-survives-weekend-crackdown.html?cm_ven=GOOGLEN
  7. Well at least the NYPD cops still have their badges on, unlike the Toronto G20 HarperThugs. That and video cameras everywhere makes it easier to charge the cops. And they will of course. Protests become more powerful as the strength of the police to bust them up is taken away. Heck we may even see a time soon when the police actually do their real job and 'serve and protect' everyone, including those exercising their freedom of speech. We pay their salaries. They work for us. Who the hell ever told them they had to protect Wall Street from freedom of speech!
  8. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?desktop_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DeU9Dx0x9h4A%26feature%3Dplayer_embedded&feature=player_embedded&v=eU9Dx0x9h4A&gl=CA Undoubtedly the biggest story coming out of Occupy Wall Street is the complicity of the mainstream media in not reporting that Wall Street is under protest. A situation like this just doesn't go 'unnoticed' by the media for this long without media being in cahoots with the Wall Street bankers.
  9. Israel has chosen this hot button issue to prevent peace. Other states, including a new state of Palestine, need to recognize the. State of Israel, but it isn't necessary at all for them to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. It's an internal issue for Israel to define its own state. It really doesn't matter what other people or states think about it at all. Israel's insistence on this meaningless gesture reveal its desire to continue the war on Palestinians. There is no desire for peace, imo.
  10. That explains the consumer 'fight back' strategy: Buy only local food, and buy NOTHING new. Let's see if the rich can live off only themselves as consumers. ETA It's quite likely that neo-liberalist greed is doomed anyway. It will die a natural death as the baby boomers retire and start selling instead of buying. They are the middle class consumers that allowed greed to rule the marketplace. Their purchase power fuelled the boom of the '80's and when they had made their major purchases, the 90's crash came. It never ceases to amaze me that all the finance gurus never manage to predict and plan for this most well known economic phenomenon of the 20th century. When its effects hit, business acts like its a total shock they weren't prepared for. I suspect it's the baby boom that made business think that 'growth' was the norm. Surprise surprise!

  12. There's really only one question to be asked/answered: Should middle-higher income people pay MORE income tax than the richEST 1%? I say no.
  13. B Wages or salary were taxed. Now we're talking about investment income from that, and that's new earnings. Tax it.
  14. First of all, don't make assumptions about my personal income or tax status. It's not your concern. Secondly, for the second time (do you read anything?), the study looks at ALL taxes, not just income tax, and concludes: The full report is a .pdf that I can't copy from, so you'll have to read it to refute. However, the largest tax burden falls on those in the middle of the distribution, not the top. Finally, might not some of that debt we're accumulating be due to tax breaks for the wealthiEST 1%, corporate welfare subsidies, corporate tax breaks and bailouts ... "stimulus" ... ?? I'll bet you dollars to donuts that the government welfare 'cheque' for one of the richEST 1% of Canadian families FAR EXCEEDS the government welfare cheque for the unemployed.
  15. Good points. "Reform ... from within" for the 'western world' too.
  16. This is wonderful. I hope it goes well. I wonder if there will be protests by extremists. It will clarify for the world that mainstream Muslims are not the problem, only extremists (Wahabi, etc.: pre-Islam tribal sects), and I do think there are lots of people who need to see/hear that message loud and clear. I hope there is no violent backlash, but I fear ... It takes courage to do this. Kudos!
  17. If Hudak (Harris-lite) wins there will be mucho labour unrest, possibly the spark that will cause nation-wide unrest to coalesce into a general strike, etc. Those who think 'a firm hand' on the labour movement is needed will learn that sometimes that 'hand' is the last straw. If the NDP won, we could end up with a Bob Rae rerun where, not really prepared to handle the economy, they make the mistake (again) of expecting their supporters to take the economic hit 'for the public good', another spark for protest. The safe bet, in these volatile times, is a Liberal minority.
  18. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111903791504576588760450245004.html#project%3DSLIDESHOW08%26s%3DSB10001424053111904194604576583224238993748%26articleTabs%3Darticle I continue to wonder why, with a two state solution on the table, Israel wants Palestine to recognize it as a Jewish state. To me, the nature of its state is an internal Israeli matter and an unnecessary stumbling block to peace. At the same time, though, being a Jewish state doesn't mean Arabs can't live there, as they do already. I'm not sure how the Israeli settlements are "a result" of the problem either. I think approaching the UN this way provides more hope of solutions than closed talks.
  19. Not sure what you mean, but it seems to me the corporations operating there wouldn't want their profits interrupted, so the warmongers might think twice.Odd to think about possibly not having access to all the things we now buy from China, since that's pretty much everything these days. I can't see even the stupid warmongers being that stupid.
  20. We're acquiring public debt while the richEST are getting tax cuts. The study includes all taxes, not just income tax. However, the lowest income tax rate not 5% as you said, but 15% federal + 5% (or more) provincial: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/fq/2010_rt-eng.html Full study report available here: http://www.policyalternatives.ca/publications/reports/eroding-tax-fairness
  21. Most of the repeat offenders - the revolving door syndrome - doesn't occur in federal prisons but provincial correctional facilities. Drug possession, B&E's and other robberies, all usually less than 2yrs. The rehab programs in provincial facilities are not as extensive as in federal prisons, and shorter stays don't allow time. I don't see much in this bill to address any real problems.
  22. Imperfect as it may be, the UN is a unique place where countries of the world participate in various committees etc and collaborate and cooperate, learning about each other as they do. I don't think we should be "dumping" it because some countries don't get along. That's the best reason - can think of for keeping it. Any country that feels strongly can leave, but I haven't heard of any complaining to that extent.
