(yawn).....ummm.....ya think? You mean the plays that actually DO develop? Since most soccer games consist of about 4 chances and 2 goals, that means 99% of what is ATTEMPTED never comes to fruition. In football, a completed pass or first down has small measurable goals that must be achieved all the way down the field. A crucial first down is another point of excitement in the game. A crucial defensive stop is another. There are many measurable "successes" and "failures" throughout a football game for which the crowd can get excited or not. On the other hand, a soccer team might work its way 3/4 of the way down the field, find themselves trapped and work all the way back and try the other side or work it around looking for an opening. But unless you're a total loser I can't see getting excited about a 15 foot pass from mid to striker across the centre line and back again. Football is the ULTIMATE example of this, moreso than any other sport both on planning, strategy, tactics and one-on-one play. There's far more blowouts in "football". As for the thrilling endings, that's only because the last two minutes opf the game are the only time anything actually happens. All this statement does is prove your ignorance.

You make a good point. You know what? I hadn't thought about it until now, but that whole flag thing isn't really about Canadians or Americans. It's about Europeans and their incessant bullshit hatred and penile envy of the United States. Anybody who's travelled alot knows that almost anyone can be annoying - Americans yes. But Europeans can be as much or more annoying and arrogant than any American I've ever encountered. Think about the "flag" standard. So what is basically going on is this: You have to put on a Canadian flag so you don't get confused for an American? If we all behave so similarly that they snotty euros need a flag to decide whether they'll "accept" us or not, then perhaps it's preconceived bullshit in the first place. Fricking eurotrash. Brutal.
-
First of all, they're called football and soccer over here. Even pretentious wannabe euros don't call the TTC subway the "tube". Thanks for sharing the clock thing (gee - never heard THAT before from soccer mooks) but it doesn't relate to anything. In football every play is a scoring opportunity. In soccer, sure the clock is running while frick and frack ponytail play pass back and forth for eight minutes in their OWN penalty area....oops...lokoing here they're crossing the centre line - er - scratch that - they're back in their own zone again....back after these messages..........................hi we're back....and the play still hasn't shown any signs of moving toward the opposition's end of the pitch..... hahahaha. It's not uncommon to go 10 minutes without even a threat to score on the opposition. Yet the clock is running, so it MUST be exciting. Thrilling endings is something else rarely found in soccer but found every sunday in the NFL. Soccer endings are usually characterized by a bunch of guys passing it around in mid-field and some rotten-toothed brit broadcaster hmming and hawing about how much injury time we have to endure Speaking of Football, did anyone see killer finish to the Fiesta Bowl yesterday? Holy shnikies!! Now THAT was exciting.

That doesn't make any sense. We're not talking about what's the better experience or marketing package: we're arguing about what happens on the field, not on its periphary. By that standard, football is dull dull dull. No it's not. It's amazing - soccer is dull. But then again, as I stated previously, it's just a matter of opinion.
-
Yes - because its the most exciting to watch. Been to two games at old trafford. Average. Lots of drunks. Not much to watch on the field. Now you're getting there - live sports is about the EXPERIENCE. But you're trying to make it mutually exlusive. It's not and either or my friend. Not everything is black and white. NFL has the best game, the most exciting finishes most of the time, the most parity, the best crowds, the best stadiums, the closest playoff races, the least predictable outcomes - all which contribute to the excitement of the product and the experience. I'll cut soccer some slack - I enjoy the highlights. But it doesn't even hold a candle to NFL.

CBC to air comedy "Little Mosque On The Prairie"
JerrySeinfeld replied to mikedavid00's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Let's face it: it's more than likely going to be just another bad canadian show. But I'm going to give it a chance - who knows it might be really good. I just don't have a ton of faith in CBC product. Most of it (regardless of political stripe) is just plain awful. If you have to get government funding to do something it usually isn't very good to begin with. -
haha - I coach hockey you silly mook. NFL is the best league. NHL is good too - hockey is my favorite sport but the NFL is a superior product in terms of marketing, television, parity, star power, economics, etc. etc. You can really gamble on any sport can you not? But the NFL games I've been to - i mean what an EVENT! they truly know how to do it up. And one thing I have noticed at NFL games. There are SO many opportunities to stand up and cheer with the crowd. Every single play when the home team is on defense, the crowd is truly deafening. It's so amazing. Soccer provides the chance for the home crowd to celebrate a goal an average of only about TWICE in a 90 minute match. Hockey has gotten better, but there is still maybe only 2-4 times you get to stand up and go crazy about a goal by the home team. Sure there are fights and hits, but still doesn't add up to the pandemonium during every defensive stand by the home squad in an NFL game. When you buy and NFL ticket, you're guaranteed at least dozens of opportunities to get right crazy with the crowd. I enjoy all sports. Even soccer. I have really really tried - but it's still on the bottom of the list. It's truly quite lame.

CBC to air comedy "Little Mosque On The Prairie"
JerrySeinfeld replied to mikedavid00's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Interesting....considering the creator/producer is prarie born and bred.... Good retort - but you have to admit: the prairies are probably the worst breeding grounds for academic superiority complexes. Stick a university schmuck (yes - I was one too) amongst a bunch of common sense, hardworking people who speak the truth instead of trying to bend it. It's a lot harder to preach social engineering academic bullshit when the people around you don't buy it. And it makes for some really frustrated passive aggressive ivory towers We'll see what happens I suppose.... -
Three out of four ain't bad. Its a matter of opinion I suppose. But it's been my experience that most people who don't like football don't truly understand it. It's much more complex than soccer with a whole lot going on, both mentally and action-wise on every play - which is why football teams have so many coaches. Alot of people who like more simple-minded one-dimensional sports like soccer or hockey often don't get it and don't see what's happening on each play all over the field. I used to be like that until I learned alot more about the game. I certainly favor hockey over football, but there is no way it has even a fractino of the complexity that football does. Once I learned that I started to enjoy the NFL immensely. Hockey has more immediate gratification - chance after chance after chance. Football is a more well thought out and deliberate plan, attack, defend type of game - which is probably why alot of Americans dig it so much - it kind of resembles war with the ground attack, the air attack, the wide outs, the ground pounders.... Soccer ...well, soccer is often exclipsed by another activity - watching paint dry.
-
That is totally incorrect. The NFL is a huge business - in the USA and in Canada. Why do you think Torontonians are falling all over themselves trying to get a team (other than a latent collective inferiority complex and desire to be on equaly footing with bigger and better American cities). But I digress. First of all - Drea is overstating the importance of touching the grey cup. They parade that oversized tin can around every coffee shop in the country that'll take 'em. The CFL has a serious LACK of following and the CFL thinks its good PR to bring the grey cup to Tim Hortons and Zellers for photo ops. Whereas the Superbowl is (arguably) the most widely watched SINGLE sporting event on earth. Now some will bring up the World Cup which might be fair, but the point remains that the grey cup isn't even on the world radar when compared to the NFL or (boring old) soccer. The reason you can't find good coverage of the NFL in The Globe is that this particular paper claims to be a "National" newspaper and tries to stuff an entire country's news into 4 sections. It usually ends up with a bunch of stuff about Toronto - and the sports section (other than Toronto Maple Laugh coverage) is basically an afterthought. I bet even the Toronto Star would have provided you with a good summary of the day's NFL news. Anyone who tries to represent the typical red-blooded Canadian sports fan as someone who doesn't care about the NFL or thinks the CFL is a superior league is SERIOUSLY misleading you. The NFL is without a doubt the most competitive, well marketed, exciting and well run league in the world today.

CBC to air comedy "Little Mosque On The Prairie"
JerrySeinfeld replied to mikedavid00's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I don't know if they'll get a "pass". But you can bet the show will be touted as a great bridge between Muslim and non-Muslim culture, while not really addressing some of the problems of assimilation of lack thereof. My prediction is that the show will make light of small differences and try to make them look cute and harmless. The show might take some liberties with respect to white-redneck stereotypes - and that won't be surprising. On the other hand, if the show takes any risks with respect to offending hardcore Muslims, I'll be very surprised. We all know who's more likely to take "action" if offended. -
Monumental Stupidity
JerrySeinfeld replied to Figleaf's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Bush is the most intelligent and forward lokoing leader of our time. History will be MUCH kinder to him the the present tense impatient electorate. -
The righties keep using Tim Ball to back them. He was my professor years ago. He has been retired for a long time. He does no research anymore. He gets paid as a partisan flack by the oil industry. He is not some independent, actively working scientist in climatology. The right wing continues to use people with no current and respected credentials to back their positions. They instead point to blog journalists as having a bead on the truth. If they believe those guys, why not the September 11 conspiracy people? Hey buddy - every scientist doing active research has to get money from somewhere. You don't think there are vested interests on the "climate change is real" side?
-
The point I'm trying to make is that society is obsessed about having to spend piles of money on appearances, for both sexes. That's because appearances matter. You will be judged in the world by what you say, what you do and what you look like. If you don't care about what people think of you, then don't spend the money.
-
This isn't a thread about mulroney. Its about the massive delusion known as man-made climate change.

Let's sum it up here: Doggy is mad (again) because he wants to change the standards of beauty to suit his needs (whatever they may be) and piss - again - into the strong wind of reality. Meantime the rest of us realize that hot chicks will never be replaced by ugly fatties on magazine covers, because nobody wants to buy soap or lipstick from an ugly fatty. Pretty basic stuff.
-
This thread is starting to look alot like a bunch of ugly fat people who are pissed off because they can't keep up. It seems like the entire world is conspiring against successful, good looking people. Makes sense - envy is a great motivator.

Are the Liberals the new NDP?
JerrySeinfeld replied to JerrySeinfeld's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The Conservative website: http://www.conservative.ca/EN/2590/ "Today in Oakville, Ontario Stephen Harper today released Stand up for Canada, the Conservative Party’s election platform, emphasizing that it is based on the values that he and all Canadians share. The platform is based on the values of integrity, family, respect for work, achievement, and commitment to a strong and free Canada. “These are the values in which our plan is rooted,? said Mr. Harper. “Values which matter to me, values which I believe matter to all Canadians, values which have endured and will endure.?" The key difference here seems to be that at least the Conservatives actually spelled out what they consider values held by Canadians to be. And really, I think the Liberals would have a hard time arguing that "integrity, family, respect for work, achievement, and commitment to a strong and free Canada" aren't values held by Canadians, as opposed to the Liberal allusions that to be a real Canadian one must solely embrace the doctorines of one Pierre Elliot Trudeau, and believe in ill-defined things like multiculturalism and federalism. Exactlly. But keeping with the topic, I am starting to question whether the Libs can win by adopting an NDP style platform? They're really pushing the left - Layton has nowhere to go. Sure Toronto and Vancouver continue to buy the multiculti socialized-everything trudeaupian pipe dream, but who else will? The rest of the country doesn't buy the bullshit anymore. -
What happens if.......
JerrySeinfeld replied to fellowtraveller's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Last I heard, Canadian provinces are not for sale. You haven't heard of Quebec? -
I guess it depends what you mean by "dress to the 9's", "inappropriately", and the proviso "...if you're a good looking guy". -k Here is the quote: I'm calling BS on that.
-
See my post about accepting societal values of beauty - same thing. If I think that gal is pretty, why should I care what Calvin Klein or Cosmo or Dove think ? Agreed. But my point was this: August was ranting about guys and their hummers and bloated credit cards and how it's an act. My point is: maybe for some of 'em it is. But get used to it: some guys are more successful than you and have more money for toys. Big Frickin' deal. Get over it. WHining aboubt it reeks of envy. And that's not cool - you will get no women as long as your preoccpied with some other dude's life. Get some self confidence and forget about Enzo's new porcshe.
-
Only part right. Much like the Canadian Forces, I believe in the "3 D" system. Dress, deportment, and discipline. It's find to be all cocky and confident, but if you look like a slob or can't handle your liquor, you can head straight back to latrine duty, Private. -k Very cute - but tell me this Kimmy: But the point I was arguing was this: Someone on this forum (too lazy to look back right now) is saying that as a guy, if you go to a nightclub and don't dress to the 9's you not "getting any play" and I'm calling BS - that as long as you're not dressed "inappropriately" then you can get away with simple non-brand name clothing if your a good looking guy who knows how to carry and conversation and have a good laugh...tru or not?
-
Hey August that's uncalled for (and simply untrue). But why oh why do people get all hot and bothered about what other guys have or don't have? If someone be an idiot and blow is dollars on a Hummer or a pair of shoes he can't afford, that's his problem, not yours. You shouldn't criticize other people for their possessions - it's uncool and reeks of envy. And simmer down on the BS about my mom's basement - i have a fridge and a VHS and that's all I need
-
You're wacked man. Lots of chicks dig the rugged "who gives a shit" look - as long as you don't smell like crap and take care of your body. In fact I read somewhere that women who are ovulating tend to be more attracted to men with "manly" features like facial hair or broad shoulders....nothing at all to do with clothing. Being able to clean-up nice never hurts - but personally I think women like the "cleaned up" look alot more when they know there's a "man" (ie. not a priss) underneath - I've had a lot of women tell me exactly that. Books are one thing, experiences are another. You go to a night club dressed like I said and tell me if you pick up what you want or you have to settle or you get flat out burned. I'm sorry but I'm going to assume that those women who talked to you are taking you for a ride. It's a shame as far as both male and female go to have to spend all sorts of money on appearances, females who wear a hoores uniform just to get guys to notice them and guys having to look like an abercrombie & fitch model so they won't get burned, this is BS and everyone knows it. You're either hangin' in some lameass night clubs or talking to the wrong women. For men, in most cases it doesn't matter what you wear, it's how you handle yourself. Certainly dressing appropriately is important (wearing a T & Jeans to a black tie isn't cool). But on the margin what really matters is how you handle yourself around the women you're after. Ask any woman - she'll tell you the same thing.

Are the Liberals the new NDP?
JerrySeinfeld replied to JerrySeinfeld's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yes - "campaign from the left, govern from the right" The Liberals understand something about Canadians that the other parties miss out on: The Canadian electorate is VERY concerned with perception over reality. Consider health care. Our health care system is ranked I think #38 in the world? Walking into any Montreal emergency room (or any one in Canada) will tell the tale about how decrepit our health care system REALLY is. Yet we wear our health care system like a badg of honour. As Canadians, we adore the PERCEPTION that we have an enviable health care system. Another example is "peacekeeping". We have peacekeepers (without guns haha) on our CURRENCY. Yet I believe we slot somewhere between turkey and croatia for the number of peacekeepers we contribute to the UN. And well below the USA. Yet we adore the PERCEPTION (or rather SELF perception) that Canada is a leader in peacekeeping. The Liberals understand this and play off of it very well. They have done a great marketing job of adopting the "natinoal identity" and claiming all of their "values" as the "value of Canadians". Watch the next election: the Liberals will consistently use the term "Canadian Values".
