  1. Don't get me wrong, I don't oppose affording effective measures to the police, or laws that can enhance public safety............With guns, I favor safe storage requirements within reason, nor do I oppose licensing.........such measures will reduce the ability of children, criminals and mentally ill people from obtaining firearms.......... Now if the RCMP deems me safe to own firearms and grants me a license, hence does not consider myself a threat, what mater is it the number and types of guns I own?
  2. How does the registry stop them from getting their hands on guns?
  3. You're waffling.......how does a registry prevent children from shooting each other?
  4. Warrantless wiretaps it is then........
  5. Are people that commit gun crimes likely to register their firearms?
  6. So, you think it far fetched that police don't drop their guard when called to domestic violence call if nothing showed up on the registry? How does a registry prevent students from being killed?
  7. Yet, those calling for a registry want to ban certain guns.......and have in the past.
  8. Exactly, the police don't lower their guard when entering a crackhouse because the registry came back clean.........
  9. The police respond exactly the same, to any calls of violence, regardless of a gun registry..........
  10. Do you think if police are called to a crack house, and a registry tells them there are no guns inside, they assume all is well?
  11. Indeed, but then, there isn't they same level of political action attempting to ban pets, cars and trailers......
  12. I know that cops that assume there is no danger on a call, regardless of a registry, don't last as cops too long......
  13. And that is a non-starter.......First and foremost, by precedent, most gun owners fear the registry is just a list of guns to take by the Government (as various guns during the LGR were).........Also, in tracking stolen guns, despite what is claimed, its of little use......As I've said before, most gun made pre 1968 didn't have serial numbers and those with them, if stolen can easily be taken off with a file. And of course, as mentioned, most crime guns are smuggled in from the United States......a registry wouldn't address that. With Canada's laws, if you wanted to address a great number of the suicides, accidents and murders done with legally obtained firearms, in my view, you would require the same standards/screening for "regular gun owners", among the First Nations, were a member just needs a letter from the chief/elders stating a need for hunting.........Of course, I feel politically, that has the potential for becoming a third rail.
  14. The number of guns, when secured, doesn't mater........My ~60 firearms are safer than a person that owns one and keeps it loaded in their dresser drawer. But I largely agree, in Canada, the vast majority of crime guns, in part due to safe storage laws, are smuggled into the country since legally stored firearms are harder to steal and we require licensing (the omnibus background check).
  15. Well I don't deny 3D-guns (and printers) are in their infancy, like all technology, it will progress........As to their durability, again, bolts and barrels can be replaced (by easily obtained parts online or by just printing another one), none the less, if someone is intent on using one, to they really need a gun that will last 10K+ shots? To some degree, but safe storage will reduce both household accidents (among children) and petty theft, adding to the guns found on the black market.
  16. I don't know........but if someone like Don Cherry was accused of slapping around four different, much younger women, I'm certain the narrative would be quite different.....
  17. Fifty shades of Ghomeshi? I wonder what the reception would be (by those defending and condemning him) if he was Hockey or Football player? What about a politician or TV preacher??? Of course he has a presumption of innocence, but hiring a PR/damage control firm doesn't hurt.....I wonder if his accusers have the same resources to obtain their own media spin doctors......... None the less, this appears to be getting more coverage then any recent CBC produced Drama..........
  18. A little more on the Bibeau's motives: I wonder if/when it will be made public?
  19. I feel my position on the subject is well known, well also understanding the reality surrounding it.......That is not to say there aren't proposals that are both realistic and effective, well also lending a common ground for both sides.........
  20. Exactly, and even the prospect of such talk results in the opposite desired result........As such, if one does desire positive results, one should look at "solutions" that are both realistic and palatable, well also actually being effective.
  21. Its politically moot........good enough?
  22. Supply is moot when the supply within the States is measured in the hundreds of millions, and further compounded with the advent of 3D-guns.......likewise availability, but as stated in this case or Sandy Hook, the shooter was able to easily obtain firearms from a parent. If said guns were kept in safes does this mean either shootings wouldn't have happened? Its hard to say, but I think the apparent ease in which they did could be reduced, likewise cases of household accidents or common theft.
  23. I can't speak to the direct technical means, I'm hardly computer savvy (it took me several days to figure how to turn-off my computer with Windows 8), but you speak of things like Tor.........Did not Snowden say the NSA has already exploited things like Tor/Firefox? Just a quick Google, and found this piece: https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2013/10/how_the_nsa_att.html I don't know if what he suggests is true or not, but if I had to choose between the NSA and some of the services you mention, I'll take the NSA in the long run............At the end of the day, you could very well think you're secure with such things as Tor (and you could be....for awhile), but you'll likely never know what the NSA knows.......so whats to worry about? If you feel your information is private, carry on....
  24. Certainly, in a case such as this (or Sandy Hook) where the shooters stole the firearms from family members, something as simple as safe storage laws (requirement for the owner to keep guns in a safe) could go a long way in preventing similar crimes. Would it prevent it from ever happening? No, but then as pointed out, laws are broken.
  25. And with the OP, did laws against carrying guns in schools or homicide prevent this crime? And that is my point.
