F-35 Purchase Cancelled; CF-18 replacement process begins
Derek 2.0 replied to Moonbox's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
So you claim I "dodged" a question by making a distinction? So why wasn't the "cookie" included in the demolition loadout from your cited source again? Riiight.......so what's goofy about linking to globalsecurity? You've yet to square the circle that is your loadout link........so was your loadout link wrong in not calling loadouts with "cookies" demolition loads, versus blast loads? Is not the HC "cookie" a blast bomb? It clearly stated as much in the dictionary link you provided.........but what you "forget" to include well quoting it. Are you no saying your dictionary link is wrong? Have we not been discussing how various munitions destroy their intended targets? How would I hurt myself? Actually, no you didn't tell me........I'm still waiting to hear you explain how 4000 tons of HE bombs is more effective than 4000 tons of HE artillery rounds........ You cited examples of past sieges, but did not offer a contrast of tons of HE dropped by the Germans, versus that what is estimated can be dropped on Seoul by the North.........I still await for you to post your own gobbledygook, as opposed to dictionary links and insults........ How many tons of HE were dropped on Leningrad and Berlin? Pop culture? No, mine is based off of the claims of the South Koreans, Americans and North Koreans....... So what did you base your opinion on of South Korea being able to fend off nuclear armed North Korea? -

Exactly, and is why the American forces(and their dependants) in South Korea have been moved further South from the DMZ......away from the actual threat posed by the North Koreans...... -

Right.........but proxy wars in far off crap holes that nobody really cares about is far better than Planet of the Apes....... -

The North Koreans can attack Seoul from behind the DMZ with tube and rocket artillery, likewise plenty of IRBMs........ -

Sorry, but the Darkside, regained control of the State Senate and nearly the House.......and tossed a US Senator.....I wouldn't claim victory until post 2016 -

As Wilber said........a near pure nuclear force was abandoned by the Super Powers in the 1960s because it limited options......The decades long, massive conventional force structure in Europe during the Cold War was what prevented a large scale nuclear exchange between the West and Soviets....because it allowed options. -

That of course is pure fantasy.......You had might as well suggested building a Death Star. An insurgency requires a populace united against a common threat……..your purported threat (United States?) could quell the majority of Canadian dissent with the promise of lower taxes, US netflix and cheap dairy products………. I’ll heed your “insurgency” posture once the hippies up the ante from occupying city parks and drum circles outside the gates of their latest cause de celebre……….Let them eat pot brownies -

There is nothing cheap about strategic nuclear weapons.................likewise there is a difference between building a nuclear weapon and an effective nuclear deterrent. -

Of course, morality and international/domestic political outrage aside, to purchase and operate a Trident sub fleet like the Royal Navy, we’d be looking at a financial outlay greater than both the F-35 and National Shipbuilding programs…..of course that doesn’t include the actual SLBMs (which the British still receive service and support of by the Americans) or the warheads (our various other forces to protect them)……..and of course, the Royal Navy has/had corporate knowledge in operating both maritime nuclear propulsion and strategic nuclear weapons…….we do not. In essence, we’d require the support of one of the current nuclear powers, or better put, the folks eyeball wishes to fend off…… -
I think you're missing the intent of the post........in that, without Western forces both selecting and designating targets, collateral damage would be far worse.
-
Sure, but the NRA didn't get politically active until the late 70s..........Irony of ironies, Chuck Heston, in '68, supported LBJ's gun control.......
-
But again......the film didn't discount other lobby groups.
-
Certainly…..More so with the defense industry and to a lesser degrees with firearms industry. With the firearms industry, the political divide is more felt at the State level……case in point, post Sandy Hook, several “Blue” States brought forth further gun-control legislation, as a response industry from within those States have threatened to and have left the States (and withdrawn sales and support to said States police forces) for “Red” States. In the case of Connecticut, after attempting to bring forth bans/restrictions on AR-15s, Colt threatened to leave the State, when faced with said threat, the State legislature offered Colt assurances that they could still produce AR-15/M-16/M-4s within the State, but just not sell their products within the State……Colt has since left for Texas, and with it, skilled (union) jobs and a source of tax revenue. The same story was likely to play out with Remington/Bushmaster within New York State, until legislation was altered and the Federal Government handed a contract to Big Green (that weren’t thought to win on merit), then Remington moved production of handguns and AR-15 like rifles to Alabama………. Likewise Colorado and MAGPUL….The State brought forth further gun laws, MAGPUL left for Texas and Wyoming, taking with it ~$80 million to the Colorado economy….After the 2014 Election, Colorado Democrats lost the State Senate and barely held onto the State House and Governorship, well also losing a US Senate seat to the GOP….it’s expected the GOP at both levels will attain further gains in 2016….

I'm surprised Trudeau's "hidden agenda" hasn't yet been brought up...........I wonder how popular the Liberals plan of tapping CPP as piggybank for their election promises will be among Canadians..........
-
There is some crossover between the two industries, but largely they are separate. For example, Smith & Wesson, Colt and Remington/Bushmaster could all compete for a DoD contract, but in such a case, a group like the NRA isn’t going to pick favourites among its own industry members to lobby for. In that example, it’s the individual manufactures that utilize their own lobbyists.
-
Right, which in terms of size its clearly not, likewise is far outspent by the defense/energy/Pharma/Agribusiness etc lobby groups, but (as highlighted in the film) is more effective because of its ability to mobilize its membership at the ballot box.
-
The film never suggested the NRA was the largest lobby group, but one of the most effective and powerful lobby groups in Washington.
-
I agree, I watched it several weeks ago on PBS and then again tonight on CBC.........I thought it a somewhat fair piece in its delivery, as opposed to most anti-gun hit jobs, interviewing (former) NRA senior members as opposed to a doc commissioned several years ago by CNBC (America's Gun: The rise of the AR-15) which relied upon the more extreme elements from the gun-rights side, likewise playing more upon fear.......Some of the short links from the PBS link were also well done. Of course, I feel most PBS/Frontline Docs are well done.

How is it a dodge? It’s a clear statement of fact. Again, I made a clear distinction, that you choose to distort and then claim I put words in your mouth……..Cleary the distinction made was between both methods of destructive force, one (the light case cookie) and the more prevalent munitions (MC/GP bombs and HE artillery shells) used to attack concrete targets. Really? I suppose you meant "goofy" in the positive way...... I’m sorry that you’re reliant upon cherry-picking dictionary links to support your position……..So, were “cookies” used to penetrate buildings? Not the slightest, as I maintained, destructive potential of any explosive munitions are dependent upon a whole host of variables……I’ve offered both examples of said variables and the most rudimentary scientific explanation behind such variables……..your respective counter has been to insult myself personally, dodge and/or offer your simplistic bluster and counter questioning akin to “how long is a piece of string”…… What argument? You’ve avoided like the plague any discussion relating to the actual science behind the topic we’re discussing……..Which I assume is a cover for your poor understanding of grade school level science…..I had hoped delving into the actual mechanics of the topic would help your wanting understanding and allow us to continue in a positive fashion. Right, but you clearly lead us down this rabbit hole by equating the potential (lack of) destructive force of North Korean artillery, utilizing conventional HE, on a modern concrete city like Seoul, with the Allied bombing of Dresden………clearly an apples to oranges argument, fore it weren’t, you’d have answered unequivocally that HC blast bombs like the “cookie” would be effective against concrete targets…. And of course your opinion of the lack destructive force of North Korean artillery is not only counter to my opinion, but that of the South Koreans, Americans and the North Koreans themselves…….. All you’ve offered to expand upon your opinion is name calling, personal attacks, bluster, failed comparisons to firebombing of German cities and an opinion piece that stated the North couldn’t flatten Seoul because of effective retaliatory attack against North Korean forces led by the Americans………of course, this is counter to your other claim that the South Koreans could fend off the North Koreans sans the Americans…….. -
Speaking of that, add Canadian war flicks centering around a US led war ........coming this fall: I expect, like American Sniper, actual patriotism will trump what is typical among the "liberal arts" formula......I can't think of the last actual Canadian made movie I looked forward to.......coming this fall....just in time for the election

A further update on the naval shipbuilding program: Not the least bit surprised, well also being a cagey political move in several ways…….First the selection of the various subcontractors will be out of Government’s hands and placed in the control of Irving. This of course prevents the all too common pork “industrial off-sets” going to companies in key political ridings, instead allowing Irving the ability to select companies best suited, preventing another Frankenstein-like-procurement program. Second it absolves the current/future Government from faux partisan attack by both the Opposition and the media……..Once the sub-contractors are selected and steel starts being bashed any questions over delays or overruns can be directed to Irving…….. As I said here: I think the selection of the various sub-contractors will be obvious choices for Irving, which will translate to a successful end result for the RCN, based on the combined naval experience (and success) of said firms in the naval warfare field.......calm seas ahead for both industry and the RCN.

His father had no problem doing so, so much so, was threatened with economic sanctions by several European NATO members in the mid to late 70s for his Government's reduction in commitments and the dismal state of the Canadian Forces. -

What it reveals more so to me, is that Trudeau’s opinion could be interpreted as saying he views our forces deployed in the Middle East as not contributing to the coalition and that he feels our efforts against ISIS will fail…….fore by deduction of the “Trudeau doctrine”, the Canadian Forces contribution could have been mimicked by others, likewise there is no 100% guarantee of success…….. I doubt any Prime Minister or leader of the Official Opposition, in all of Canadian history, has made such disparaging remarks well Canadian Forces were deployed overseas……of that I’m astounded. -

I never stated 4000 lbs bombs weren't dropped on soft targets like cites. What didn't it confirm? So you're saying light case bombs sometimes were fitted with time delay fuzes to go through buildings? I never said that they were.........and of course you're skating on the question.......larger blast= greater destructive force remember? No, not during the initial phase of an explosion........quite the opposite actually, as was already explained to you......I'm sure you could even use wikipedia and figure out the inverse effect of a vacuum Would 4000 lb cookie blast bombs be effective against a city like Seoul, like they were on Dresden???...remember your firecrackers when answering -
Target is shutting down its Canadian operation.

I was surprised their first foray into BC was in Nanaimo (and not the Lower Mainland or Victoria) and only 5 minutes North from the current Wholesale Sports location......great store though.......the one to watch though is Crappy Tire, as certain stores are also dipping their toes back into firearms sales and with really good price points (only ~10% markup on what they pay for them) when compared to Wholesale and Cabela's.....
