The last "riot" that gained traction against a powerful State within Maryland occurred over 230 years ago.......I think the Republic will survive.
-
But has it? There is anarchy in select poor neighborhoods (see Black), but has yet to spill out into the majority of surrounding areas.....Of course if the State saw fit to cease the riots they could (hence the deployment of the National Guard), but it then becomes a cost/benefits argument......much like fire fighters will contain a fire and let it burn itself out.
-
Hobbes's political theory is the fundamental cornerstone on which all modern liberal democracy is grounded upon.......the right of the individual. I don't Fear (that word again) the State more than I do society as a whole.......we're simpatico for the most part, but what is ironic, you've expressed opinions prior that only the State is the one that should be armed.......chew on that.
-
Then I expect the power of the State to be diminished forthwith.......for if what you say is true, society Fears the State more than anarchy.
-
Exactly..........Hobbes summed it up rather well in Leviathan.....in essence, mankind's own fear of our violent animal nature is the allowance and consent to the powerful to govern the masses....Fear of chaos begets the Fear used to maintain a civil society.
-
Assuming you're correct, as a society, how do we get from point A to B? I doubt you'd seek a solution from those already in positions of trust and power to instill said greater accountability.........hence to foment your desired change, "society" must (re)act.....and if society chooses not to, that seems rather rotten.
-
And many of such ideas today on violence and ethics took root in another book......
-
Very good points, as clearly violence is a sociological problem.........by chance, did you read this book? I ask because it touches on your points near verbatim.........

Justin Trudeau + Bill Blair = open nomination?
Derek 2.0 replied to Derek 2.0's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
And this is another demonstration as to why I have the utmost confidence (and have been predicting for several years despite polling) the Tories will form another majority this Fall. Furthermore, though I wouldn't have thought it likely last Summer, despite current polling, I could still see (as even more "progressive" Canadians get to know Trudeau) the NDP retaining the Official Opposition title this fall.......... Perhaps Naheed Nenshi for the Liberal Democrats in 2019? -
Quebec To Create Its Own Gun Registry
Derek 2.0 replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Clearly not for you.........quite the opposite, as the numbers provided demonstrate that CCW holders are not causing these crimes.........As to your reasoning, you're following the incorrect meme that more guns equals more crimes, which is flawed......a gun, and in this case a handgun, is not the cause of crime. I never suggested that to be the case, but that point refutes your claim in regards to "vast access and widespread availability" of handguns being key, as today there are far more handguns and CCW holders in American than was the case in the 1970s, which saw far greater rates of gun crime........... Explain why there were more gun crimes in the 1970s versus today.........there are far more handguns, handgun owners and concealed carry permits holders today then in the 1970s....... Your logic is flawed as its predicated on gun numbers......... Again, flawed logic that makes your point far from clear.........as already outlined, in the States, CCW holders are not the ones committing crimes, likewise, under current Canadian laws, legal handgun owners are not the ones committing crimes........ Furthermore, your ideas are contradictory..............In essence, you'd support an RPAL holder (like myself) using a firearm within my home if myself or my family was in mortal danger, likewise, by extension, you support my current lawful transportation of firearms from my home to a range (already Canadians are legally transporting handguns in their cars around town without incident), but you wouldn't support the use of firearms by lawful Canadians, if in mortal danger, in public, because you fear this would lead to an increase in (hand)gun crimes across Canada....... That makes zero sense. -
Justin Trudeau + Bill Blair = open nomination?
Derek 2.0 replied to Derek 2.0's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Furthermore, another interesting fact, Trudeau's presumptive candidate, former Toronto police chief Blair is also supportive of "carding": Interesting thought, if the Trudeau Liberals were to form Government, and Blair end up in cabinet, could we then see the RCMP "carding" on a National scale? Surely a national police carding program, combined with Trudeau's support of the Governments anti-terror Bill, would be welcomed to "keep communities safe and prevent crime"..... -
So it appears the Trudeau Liberals are welcoming into their tent former Toronto police chief (who headed the force during the G20 hippie skull thumping) Bill Blair: Interesting that Trudeau holds a press conference with Blair, who's yet to win the riding nomination......what of the other prospective Liberals in the riding and the open process? Likewise, Trudeau supporting a candidate that supports much of the current Government's law and order agenda, but well doing so desires to uphold Canadian's Charter Rights, like his force did during the G20 or Trudeau's Pop did during the "FLQ crisis", using the Army to protect Government buildings and aide police in mass arrests......why would Trudeau support Blair? One would think Trudeau would run away from him......but then, he also welcomed Eve Adams... It will be interesting to see those who support Trudeau, well decrying the acts of Toronto police during the G20, square this circle

Quebec To Create Its Own Gun Registry
Derek 2.0 replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
And that of course was my point in the post you quoted......Like lawful Canadian gun owners, in the United States, legal CCW permit holders are namely responsible people.......A clear distinction between a responsible man or women with a CCW permit versus a "punk with a stolen gun" carried in the waistband, covered by a hoodie..........hence dispelling the myth that granting a legal allowance for responsible citizens to obtain a CCW permit will result in an increase in gun violence, as clearly this is not the case, both proven by the actual number of crimes committed by CCW permit holders versus the public average and/or the fact that well gun violence has been decreasing for decades within the United States, the number of lawful CCW holders has also increased........ Context is key........ -
Its a shame you don't wish to discuss your now merged OP, though I didn't agree with several of your points, the meat and potatoes of the topic are a very underrepresented topic within Canadian politics........though I didn't partake in this original thread, I see no reason not to continue with your merged OP.

Exactly, Nasittuq's 3-5 year contracts (1999-2014) ended last Spring, replaced by a far more competitive RCL-SSD bid.........savings for the taxpayer, Raytheon has no need for cooks in long since unmanned sites for example, well still making use (when needed) of local labour, be it local ground transport, accommodation and annual sealift stevedores...... --------- Of course, the above example is one of many (As I'm sure you've also gleamed) in the Arctic, as little to none of the required skilled fields are being filled by locals, due in part to poor education and cyclical (at best) employment tenures.........In the case of Nunavut, due in large part to the land claims settlements, there is not an investment friendly climate to be had (unlike the NWT or the Yukon)......in effect, much of the Canadian Arctic, is a Government funded self-licking ice cream cone...... If we actually wish to change this going forward, as a country, we'll have to tear down the barriers preventing the De Beers, the Rio Tintos', the Shells and Suncors' from investing in much of the Arctic.......until then, more of the same, in a land where people on welfare pay $7.50 for a can of pop and a broken arm or wisdom tooth is a $40k flight to Yellowknife at taxpayers expense.....
-
So you're stating you know the kitchen at the Cape Parry DEW site, closed ~30 years ago, by working for a company (that is owned and employs local Inuit) that was created in the mid-late 1990s ..........outstanding!!!! I'll leave you here, yet again, to your delusions......
-
Your point?
-
Canada pays ~40% of NWS costs, ~100% of the costs of remediation (of Canadian DEW sites) and 100% the money used to maintain our current Arctic presence........The Arctic is as important to our current Government as it is to the Americans, as it has provided an elastic buffer to both nations collective defense for decades......
-
Automation of such sites is not a sovereignty issue........subsidizing Northern (Eskimo/Inuit) communities is, as a continual presence within the Arctic is what maintains Canadian sovereignty, of which, vast sums of money are spent annually, regardless of prudent costings.........
-
Ahhh no......All service of NWS sites in the Western Arctic is from Calgary, via Yellowknife, via Cambridge Bay...(Don't start another derail, I currently work for RCL in the Kitikmeot region) ------- Likewise, its hardly a waste of money, no more so than automating lighthouses along the coasts.
-
Cape Parry has been automated since the 1980s........as is the majority of the former DEW sites (now CAM-NWS), with only several such sites with military and civilian personal throughout the year.
-
Poor example, if the intent was such, a more likely scenario would be launching missiles in existing trade routes, closer to the Lower 48.........or detonate a nuke hidden inside an ISO container. The Northwest passage runs through a section of the Arctic, bisected between the Canadian mainland and Victoria Island........there are no Russian settlements or ships in such waters...... There has been a barge shipment stranded in the ice (which came earlier last year) between Kugluktuk and Cambridge Bay since early last Fall.......commercial shipping transiting through the region will likely never be viable, with shipping to the Northern Canadian (from Hay River and Montreal) communities already curtailed by the pre-existing environmental conditions, only "free" for several months of the year (late July to early September)..... ------- With that said, control of the Arctic, as a whole, has been an ongoing diplomatic "battle" for decades. The Arctic or the Northwest passage? The Americans already control a portion of the "on-ramp" for the Northwest passage, with the Danes having partial control of the other bookend....... The Arctic as a whole without a doubt, as its resource rich and still one of the namely virgin pieces of real estate left on the planet......but has been a focus, granted gaining far less attention then it deserves, for decades.......
-
I look at the forest for the trees........
-
You have no reason compelling you to explain why...........but its kinda counter to the point of a discussion forum.......meanwhile, the Saudis still have/had interests (and will continue to) in such North American companies as Twitter, Apple, eBay, Time Warner/CNN, Pepsi and Coke, Ford, the Four Seasons and Fairmont Hotel chains, McDonalds, Ford, Disney, Procter & Gamble, Motorola.... etc....etc...etc.......Owning a portion of the former Canadian Wheat Board, is no different.
-
~1 billion a year budget = low hanging fruit.........the CBC budget alone would pay for this budget's infrastructure funding to start in 2017......
