Sexual Misconduct In Canadian Military
Derek 2.0 replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
To clarify, its "sexual misconduct", which is inclusive of everything from foul language, rumor mongering/talking about another member in a sexual way or even having a Playboy pin-up displayed......and of course the actual report didn't suggest it to be a major problem, that was the CBC/Macleans hit-jobs prior to the reports release. -

I largely agree, but drumhead courts have been present long before there was a Canada, let alone Canadian Forces......inversely, large committees in all post McNamara forces are commonplace, presided over by the good idea fairy. Yes and no, in most trades, brawn and brain are a requirement.......with the majority of Commissioned positions (Officers) requiring a degree in either a science/engineering related field and the majority of the non-commissioned trades (enlisted/NCOs) requiring a two year technical diploma and or trade specific training......there are very few positions within the military that don't require a post-secondary education to some degree. Women/LGBT currently serve in all positions of the Canadian Forces.......submarines were a differing circumstance, based more on the constrained environment and lack of room to make gender specific heads (toilets/showers) and bunking/quarters. -

Well said AG.......All I would add, if one must find fault for the ensuing witch-hunts, is a furtherance of ensuring all members, new and old, are savvy to the countless avenues of approach to properly addressing such issues, inside and out of the CoC, afforded by the NDA.........One can only address reported incidents of misconduct in the end. -
That within a civil society, a segment of said society, will break the law......that includes police. First cops ever charged with a violent crime in Baltimore? Don't suppose you have a cite? You're of the assumption that we're of the same opinion as the rioters, in that we're in agreement over an unjust authority worthy of a revolt........Of course, we're also leery of those that crap where they eat. Frankly, I'm quite fine with those that would burn and steal from their own local community having diminished input over governance of society as whole. Likewise, I think to tie this to the unjust society meme makes a mockery of those peaceful demonstrators of the Civil Rights era.

What actually is a lower income Canadian family? Under Trudeau's plan, the planned 20.5% (down from 22%) bracket ($44701-$89401 a year income) will translate into ~$ 700 a year in tax savings.........So a Canadian family with a single income earner making 75k a year will receive under $1000 a year in savings, versus the Tories proposed income splitting, with the same family saving up to the capped limit of $2000 a year........to say nothing of any benefits of the TFSA..... So Trudeau's plan does nothing for low income Canadians, well hurting seniors, which by far comprise the majority of TFSA account holders.......as clearly the ability to sock away an extra 5000K a year over ten in a TFSA, with a 4-6% return, translates into ~$2000-3000 annual gains a year, versus Trudeau's $700........Canadians will do the math on both plans....... Is Trudeau trying to put the Liberals in 4th place?
-
But so is petty theft, rape and murder........ I don't recall said demonstrators pilfering RCA tvs and Kools though......
-
I differentiate between isolated incidents of abuse and sanctioned state killings. In not so many words....yeah. The Washington (and the Birmingham movement) march generated nationwide interest in MLK's cause and the following year, LBJ signed into law the Civil Rights Act.....so yeah, I'd point to the work of peaceful protesters, holding signs, as effective when contrasted with rioting, looting and torching ones own community, to achieve some measure of positive change.......
-
No, I define "state killings" as killings sanctioned by the State.......in this case, not so much: Oh, like the Rodney King riots.......or the Watts and Detroit riots of the 60s......or the zoot suit riot of the 40s etc Quite the precedent for change......clearly the rioters got everything they wanted....and went home to watch their new tv. Peaceful sign holding never works:
-
How is that? As already mentioned, a single family with one earner making 80K a year currently pays more tax than a different family with two earners making 40k each.............how is that a benefit to the higher income couples? Even then, the sole 80k earner, with the $2000 cap, will still pay more taxes than the two 40k earners.
-
Again, its a mater of perspective and ones own bias...........I don't see the liberation of Malt liquor and menthols as a revolt against "state killings"...... Perhaps, but I doubt most of the local (Black) store owners that were the victims of the riots are too well-off........certainly not anymore.

BC Teachers Getting Screwed...Again
Derek 2.0 replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
The Big Three were struggling to adapt into the 2000s........hence going bankrupt. GM management, not the unions, should have divested Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn, Saab etc in the 80s and 90s........Likewise Dodge with Plymouth and Ford with Mercury......not only would this have allowed greater emphasis in their remaining brands, but also cost savings from shrinking facilities and (union) workforce........ As much as I dislike the CAW, the Pontiac Aztek was not their fault...... -
Right, with MLK being a champion of gun ownership......inversely, Chuck Heston marching with MLK on Washington in '63.
-
You forgot Hippies.....
-
Yet no support for the white, anti government/capitalist/"the system" types camping occupying city parks........square that circle.
-
But why? With the Tories income splitting and TFSA limits you could save upwards of several thousand dollars a year, but under the Trudeau Tax "adjusted rates", Canadians earning under 89k a year will save upwards of $600-1000 a year.......don't you want to pay more of your money to Ottawa?
-
Hey, you're the one that suggested Bundy's actions gained support from the "Right" (and not the Baltimore rioters) based on skin color.......or do you have an and?
-
I don't recall the "Right" supporting the pasty white, unwashed and drum circling, Occupy movement......

Alberta Election May 2015
Derek 2.0 replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I'm sure Premier Dix will offer his utmost support to Premier Notley in destroying the Province..........since the polls are indicating an NDP majority, I'll go with a PC Government for the win...... ------- But consider this, the NDP does form a minority Government in the Heart of Harperland........how does this then play Federally? Is the Federal NDP now seen as the official anti-Harper vote, displacing Trudeau? -
I hear you, I'd likely land in Trudeau's higher rate, my wife for sure........but I'm not too worried about a Trudeau Government, a Government that will reverse the TFSA rates: And if the majority of TFSA holders are seniors that vote.........
-
Its good for the Tories........Trudeau has stated to pay for his plan he'll reverse the increased TFSA limits and income splitting, of course, both benefit seniors, with upwards of 60% of current TFSA being held by the elderly........seniors vote = ~180-190 seat Tory majority..... Likewise, even the NDP is refusing to go after the wealthy "1%" with tax increases (favoring an increase to corporate taxes), for reasons all too obvious (look no further than the UK and France a generation ago).........the wealthy have really good lawyers and accountants, and will "leave Canada" for the Caymans or Belize......The State can't tax what isn't there. It will be interesting to see how the plan actually reads once its been fully costed.......as opposed Trudeau's math written on a napkin with a crayon. How old will Garneau be in 2019 and can Mayor Nenshi speak French?
-
A good question, I'd say the difference here is that the term "popular uprising" is subjective.......One person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter etc......... I would say the support for Bundy versus these rioters is in large part due to the lack of Bundy's supporters carting off flat screens, booze and smokes....

Sexual Misconduct In Canadian Military
Derek 2.0 replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The requirement for a separate military justice system, to address the unique needs of the Canadian Forces in retaining service wide discipline and combat effectiveness, was upheld nearly 25 years ago by the Supreme Court of Canada (R vs Genereux). Though the system is far from perfect, due to its military nature, its both swifter and harsher than the civilian legal system.........such a system though would prove ineffective to those members that feel they have been the victims of "sexual misconduct" if they themselves fail to report such crimes through the proper channels...... -
Sexual Misconduct In Canadian Military
Derek 2.0 replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You can disagree all you like, but the National Defense Act is what governs all serving members, enforced by JAG and the meatheads........an outside civilian agency would have as much authority to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct, outside already existing military channels, as you do. The report did no such thing......
