It appears Mr. Dion wants to show how he wastes money on a program that isn't worth anything. Fact is, within 30 years, the only french left in Canada will be the oversized signs in Quebec. The language is dead in Canada, but not because people didn't try, but because the french spoken in Quebec isn't French. It's many things, but not the french that came over from France with the settlers. If Canada wants to be serious about educating our citizens in a culture that is the most populas in Canada, then perhaps they should start with Chinese, or one of the hundreds of dialecs of the East Indian culture. My daughter speaks Japanese as a second language and works in the import business. She has never had to use the French she learned in university. Funny enough one of her clients is in Quebec City and he doesn't speak French. If Mr Dion wants to use this as a starting point for his jump to the PMO, he had best learn to read the people he says he wants to lead. The people are more concerned with jobs and paying the bills then they are worried about if Johnny Can learn a language he will never use. If Dion was serious about teaching the students something that is truly important, he'd be speaking Chinese and Mandrin, not French. That ship sailed long ago and its time for reality to kick in. He had best learn that beyond the border in Manitoba, the rules have changed and since we are the economic lifeline of this country, he had best get with the program or he won't have a country to lead. Perhaps, but it is a hell of a lot closer than what those guys in France are speaking today. How do you expect your post to be taken seriously when you say ridiculous things like that? You do raise good points about the need to speak other international languages, but you are seriously off if you think Quebecois French is going anytime soon. I don't know what more Dion thinks he's going to do on bilingualism. At the current pace 95% of public servants will be French within ten years anyway. And I'm betting he's not worried about their fractured, broken English when his own is worse. Maybe he intends to spend more on Bilingualism by learning how to speak English? You do raise good points about the need to speak other international languages, but you are seriously off if you think Quebecois French is going anytime soon. If it was not for the federal government and a very large amount of money, French would have been dead years ago. Currently French is in a suspended state of animation, real but not real, made possible by the forced contributions of the tax payers of Canada. Just look at the the numbers relating to what French Quebec is up against concerning immediate surrounding countries that affect their spoken language.
