Because we live in a democracy and like it or not, our system says the party with the most seats runs the country.

Unfortunately % of the population has diddly squat to do with it.

Our system, had it been like France, would have eliminated the parties with the lowest number of votes from running in a follow up election.

The opposition is nit picking on these bills and holding them up from passing because they are playing political games in hopes of forcing an election. This game playing will bite them in the ass.

You think France's Parliament works better with a dozen political parties?

Yes, but the mandatory prison terms was the key promise to the people of Canada. This is why it would have been a good topic for advertising as mentioned. Curious, politics aside, would you support the mandatory sentencing for gun crimes bill?

I'm still not convinced that the bills are being held up.

As for the mandatory sentencing bill, I believe all parties said they were for it when the election was on. On the face of it, it sounds good but I haven't seen the wording on it. Nor have I heard how long the bill has been in the House before committee. Do you have a citation to indicate how long it has been or what the delay is? Or are you simply getting the information off the Conservative web page?

Michael, come on, seriously now. The CPC could have run a half legged deaf mute leper and he/she would have won the last election, the minority win had nothing to do with anything Harper did or didn't do, all he had to do was say sponsership or culture of entitlement and the electorate was his, well 30 something percent anyway..

Even the staunchest CPC supporter can see this, can' they?????

Really...their ads were attrocious and they failed to capitilize on the income trust fiasco that had the hint of scandal....In my opinion winning only a minority (given that they finally made a beachhead in Quebec) was tantamount to a failed campaign.

Very much revisionist history?

The Liberals lead throughout the first six weeks of the campaign.

The Conservatives will continue to have to overcome obstacles in any election.

They won the last election because of shrewd choices made by Harper and Liberal gaffes.

Income trust investigation?

Beer and pocorn?

Choice in Childcare?

GST cut?

Take away any of those four issues and, sadly, Paul Martin would probably have squeaked out another minority.

The GST cut had the effect of a feather....lightweight for lightwieghts...in fact, only two of thoise things are Tory planks...the GST and the $100 beer and popcorn stipend. The IT investigation was not a plank and the reaction to the beer and pocorn stipend was a liberal reaction....take the fluff away (Bewer and popcorn, GST and you are left with the IT fiacso.....and that was a gift to the Tories from the liberals.

Even today as before the election, the $100 has a low approval rating.

Next time round they will have another gift from then liberals, Dion.

Hell, Dion is the liberals Day and Manning rolled up into one.

RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS

If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us

Judge the seriousness of the GST cut how you want.

Everybody expected the Conservatives to be attack attack attack and nothing but last election.

The GST cut and choice in childcare showed they had policie ideas and could govern.

Completely agreed IT was a gift from the Liberals.

Of course the $100 has a low approval rating. People want fully subsidized daycare. Not economically feasible.

I also agree that Dion is another gift. The gift that keeps on giving....

It was introduced in may 06. "... was significantly amended by the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, which reported the bill back to the House of Commons on 21 February 2007. All mandatory minimum penalties were removed, leaving the two new offences accompanied only by maximum penalties of life imprisonment. "

So you are saying the bill is back from committee and now the Tories don't like it. Welcome to the years that Martin was prime minister. Harper will have to suck it up.

You mean the Martin year and a bit?

So when it comes to the Conservative's being the "cause" of held up legislation they should deal more cooperatively.

When the Liberals are the "cause" of held up legislation the Conservatives have to suck it up.

Wow, that is pretty fair.

And pretty tough.

He could do that or he could try to generate public pressure through advertising. Might accomplish something versus the "Dion is not a leader" campaign. Agree?

I suppose he he could do that. Playing the crime card didn't do anything for the Tories in Manitoba though. They lost even more seats the NDP.

And crime went down?

And crime went down?

And crime went down.

That's good news considering crime when down across Canada.

Canada's national crime rate dropped five per cent last year, but serious crimes such as homicide, attempted murder, assaults and robbery are on the rise, according to a Statistics Canada report released Thursday.(2005)
Provincially, the highest homicide rates were reported in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, while P.E.I., New Brunswick and Quebec had the lowest rates.

Good thing Manitoba didn't bring in Liberals........

Reality Check

"The continued increase in many crime indicators while the Liberals have been in power is a clear indication that the Liberal approach to combating crime has failed,"
The figure is correct. It comes directly from Statistics Canada's most recent justice stats for 2004.

It would all be peaches and cream then.

Stat sheet for a Liberal decade

The crime % change 1994 to 2004

Homicide -5.3

Attempted murder -29.4

Serious sexual assaults -32.6

Robbery -14

Total violent crime -9.7

My source was your very link. You can look there.

And I believe you were focusing on violent crime.
