August1991 Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 With Duceppe leaving to run for the PQ, any ideas who will be leader of the BQ?What does this mean for the BQ? I had a crazy idea that André Boisclair might accept the post. But I figure that right now, the last thing Boisclair wants to do is get involved in party affairs.Seriously, I think teh PQ will go for a relatively quick leadership selection process. If Duceppe isn't chosen PQ leader, then he may stay on as BQ leader. Then again, whatever happens to Duceppe, he's been BQ leader long enough. The BQ needs someone new. So finally, whoever the PQ chooses, there will be a BQ leadership race but not until the new PQ leader is chosen. It'll likely be someone from within the BQ caucus. I've always admired Serge Menard. Pierre Paquette is Duceppe's deputy and seems to want the job. Quote

I figured that someone from the caucus would run for the leadership. I don't know much about Paquette aside from that fact that he is an economist. Menard at least has some government experience but I don't know what he brings to the table for the BQs. How fast is the PQ going to host a leadership contest? Quote
jdobbin Posted May 12, 2007 Author Report Posted May 12, 2007 In a shocking turnaround, it looks like the neither the BQ or PQ will have a real leadership race. Duceppe is not going to run for the PQ leadership. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe has decided against seeking the leadership of the provincial Parti Quebecois.Instead, he will throw his support to Pauline Marois, a veteran PQ politician who lost the party's leadership to Andre Boisclair in the fall of 2005. Both politicians said Friday they would seek the leadership of the beleaguered Quebec sovereigntist party after Boisclair quit earlier this week. Boisclair had led the party to one of its worst showings in decades in Quebec's March 26 provincial election, leaving it in third place with 36 of 125 seats. "Mr. Duceppe is saying he thinks it's time for a woman to lead the party," CTV's David Akin told Newsnet on Saturday Quote
August1991 Posted May 13, 2007 Report Posted May 13, 2007 Duceppe now says he intends to stay on as BQ Leader but I don't think he will stay long. It is hard to imagine how a politician could destroy so quickly the popular opinion of his political acumen. Quote

It seems that the party would benefit from a shake-up that would come from an actual leadership race. Quote

He is in tough if he wants to stay on as leader of the BQ. Thankfully for him there is no real heir apparent. Quote No one has ever defeated the Liberals with a divided conservative family. - Hon. August1991 Posted May 13, 2007 Report Posted May 13, 2007 Yeah, he really screwed up with that.He is in tough if he wants to stay on as leader of the BQ. Thankfully for him there is no real heir apparent. He folded like Dollarama garden furniture.Duceppe is almost 60 and he's been leader for 10 years. He'll stay there now given the minority parliament but he and others are thinking now of his replacement. You're right that there is no one obvious. Quote
