Does Harper's message match the statistics?Recent figures seem to contradict PM's assertions about high rates and trend toward serious offences CAMPBELL CLARK From Monday's Globe and Mail April 30, 2007 at 4:50 AM EDT OTTAWA — As the Conservatives set out to focus on crime this week in Parliament, Prime Minister Stephen Harper delivered a kickoff speech on Thursday arguing that crime rates are high by historic standards and there is now a trend to more serious crime. But does the Prime Minister's message match the statistics? Reported crime rates have generally fallen over the past 15 years. In his speech, however, Mr. Harper remarked on how crime has risen since he was a boy in the 1960s. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...Story/National/ Quote It's kind of the worst thing that any humans could be doing at this time in human history. In Toronto there are gun crimes and homeless everwhere and it's a concern to many that live here. He's just trying to jump on the bandwagon. Quote ---- Charles Anthony banned me for 30 days on April 28 for 'obnoxious libel' when I suggested Jack Layton took part in illegal activities in a message parlor. Claiming a politician took part in illegal activity is not rightful cause for banning and is what is discussed here almost daily in one capacity or another. Population has increased and thus crime has too. You can spin things any way you want when you compare apples to oranges. Which is exactly what has happened here. It is all about proportions and perceptions. Quote
Keepitsimple Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 Statistics, statistics, statistics - phooey. Anybody in their 40's or 50's can think back to when they were in High School. I was raised in Montreal and not one of the better districts - Montreal North. We didn't have swarmings and kids didn't bring knives and guns to school. Now we have 11 and 12 year olds involved in crime - that's elementary school kids for heavens sake. So has violent crime increased?.....without a shadow of a doubt. Quote Back to Basics
weaponeer Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 Standing up to criminals, putting them in jail where the belong, protecting Canadians, yes he's a real GW Bush. Whatever...... Harper is no Bush, not even close..... This says it all..... Canadian Politics Are you a Liberal, a Conservative, or a Manitoban? Here is a little test that will help you decide. The answer can be found by posing the following question: You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, an Islamic Terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, praises Allah, raises the and charges at you. You are carrying a Glock 40 calibre, and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do? THINK CAREFULLY AND THEN SCROLL DOWN Liberal Answer: Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it? Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children? Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? Should I call 9-1-1? Why is this street so deserted? We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day and make this happier, healthier street that would discourage such behaviour. This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for few days and try to come to a consensus. Conservative's Answer: BANG. Manitoban's Answer: BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! Click..... (Sounds of reloading) BANG! BANG! Daughter: "Nice grouping, Daddy! Were those the Winchester Silver Tips or Hollow Points?" Son: "Can I shoot the next one!" Wife: "You ain't taking that to the Taxidermist! Quote
