UN Movie 1/2 hour

The UN and World Government is something that is largely in place. I'm wondering what people think of the UN.

I voted against the UN - (which will make a lot of trolls in favour of it no doubt)

I'm not a big fan of government, having another one with any jurisdiction over my life (one with Libya chairing a human rights commission) isn't something I like.

If the UN wants to do vaccinations and malaria tents in Africa, sure. If they want to peacekeep in areas that haven't had violence in 50 years, sure. Other than that, I'm uncomfortable with the UN.

The initial concept of the UN was probably a good one. I believe that initially it was supposed to be a body that would intervene when flagrant abuses of human rights were taking place, and as sort of a military force to ensure that two sides in a conflict stayed apart to avoid further conflict. At least that was what I thought it was supposed to be. Canada has been sending UN Troops to places like Cyprus for a number of years to keep the Greek and Turks apart.

Unfortunately for the UN, they have become an unelected body that feels they should be some sort of World Government and that was never the intent when it was formed. The other unfortunate thing is that the UN is that under Koffi Annan, Maurice Strong, and others they have become corrupt and have developed biases against certain countries like Israel, while they take the side of terrorists. They have become a toothless giant, nothing but a huge ineffective bureaucracy, and a further financial drain on member states.

They should be disbanded and the people who are appointed fired immediately, and told to go find themselves real jobs. I feel how many other's feel, and that is; in Canada we already have far too much government and it is growing daily, so I certainly do not want another bureaucracy that is looking to get paid. I already have a tough enough time putting food on my table with what little I have left after all levels of government in Canada get through with me.

"We" being Canada, or "we" being whatever country you're from?

I'm from the US and I think the UN has value, but it has shown itself to be largely lethargic in responding to true military crises (Darfur, Kosovo, Somalia). And I also think the Iraq war has shown that it is willing to pass resolutions it has no intent of ever enforcing. I think its humantiarian work is decent, but its record of placing on human rights panels some of the worst abusers of human rights is simply ridiculous. Perhaps it should scale back and do what it does best like organize food and medicine distribution, build schools, etc.

UN has many faces. The "functional" bodies like WHO operate successfully and I don't see why it shouldn't continue. I also see the benefit of the General Assembly as the world forum where the issues can at least be brought in and discussed. More controversial (and less valuable) are the parts which try to impose certain ideologies or concepts such as Human Rights Commission. No matter lofty documents like Universal Declaration of Human Rights, there does not seem to be a universal agreement in the matter at this point, so the activities of such bodies are bound to be affected by ideologies and politics.

Then there's the matter of world policing. In general, successful functioning of police (as keeper of peace and order) is based on two principles: universal acceptance of the rule of law by subjects; and, impartiality and lawful operation of police. Wherever and whenever at least on of these is compromised, police cannot and won't function successfully.

The reality of the world at this time is that neither of the above holds true. There're states that believe that they have privileges to be not bound by the law, and should have greater than others control of the world police. In this reality, effective policing cannot be achieved. Because of that, I think that the existing security infrastructure of the UN (UNSC) only creates an illusion of justice and cannot be efficient or legitimate, and therefore should be disbanded. International security or policing operations can be created ad hoc through GA structure by consenus of members.

Excellent move, everything they claim in the movie is happening. This country should be getting out of the UN and take back its own sovereignty that it has been willy nilly handed over to the beast.

Libya had its own banks thats why they were on the rogue nations list when Bush started yamering about Rogue nations.

The 20 rogue nations that he had named didn't have the IMF printing their money. (Robert Gaylon Ross)

Everything is an international banker / Fabian socialist plot - from floride in the water to taking away guns and property rights.

UN Human RightsInteresting speech - supposed to be banned.
Excellent speech...on it's own terms, not because it's some bankerplot.
Correct. It is an excellent speech and its banning shatters any credibility of the United Nations.

It is also referenced here:

Crooks and despotic leaders are thanked for their contributions yet this speaker is condemned for using a particulare tone and his issues are not addressed. This is a shame on the United Nations and worthy of discussion.

Unfortunately, the implications of banning this speech get lost in the clutter and reminds me of the little boy crying wolf on the day that the wolf actually arrives. Posting this speech in the same thread as a cartoon is ridiculous.

We do not have time for a meeting of the flat earth society.

Interesting speech - supposed to be banned.

Awesome speech, and the banning of this speech would be funny except that everything the speaker said was absolutely true. Unfortunately the U.N. has become biased, corrupt and ineffective. Yes, definitely the U.N. should be disbanded, and the one good thing that would come from it would be that terrorists and states that sponsor terrorists would lose the soap-boxes from which to sprout their hate.

I don't remember seeing the same indignation from the U.N. when the Iranian, and Venezuelan representative got up and shot their mouths off about the Leader of the U.S. I am no fan of Bush's either, but the U.N. definitely seems to pick and choose who or which countries it is okay to criticize. This is biased at it's best from an organization that is supposed to be representative of all, and is not supposed to be taking sides. Koffi Annan was real good at criticizing both the U.S. and Israel, but not a word of criticism against Hamas, Hezbollah or countries who support terrorism, or abuse their own people's human rights. Bot a word about China and their poor human rights records, and that of many other countries.
