New Democrat MP Peggy Nash says she has a perfect way to help Canadians get over the February blahs.

Nash is introducing a private member's bill to declare to declare Flag Day, Feb. 15, a federal holiday. She says Canadians need a break in the middle of winter and Flag Day is a great day to have that break. Nash says Canadians have pride in their country and the flag symbolizes the country.

Alberta has one already, Saskatchewan is doing the same. Manitoba just jumped on the bandwagon. Should Canada go the same route?

And if there is to be a day, what should be called?

How about national "Screw Winter - Let's Have A Party, Eh?" day.

I can't say that any of the names I've heard resonate with me.

No one thinks that Canada has too many stat days already?

I,ll tell you the best way to get through winter.

Collect E.I.and do a lot of skiing in the great BC ski resorts before work starts again in March

Learning lots - you are a productive member of Canada's society I see.

Taking out far more than you put in?

I'll enjoy family day on Monday. The rest of Canada is behind the game.

I think Alberta even made the August holiday offical now, it's called 'Heritage Day.' I know I've got it off at work.

So we're a holiday ahead of the rest. Poor souls going to work on Monday, you need to get on board the Alberta advantage.

That would definitely have more appeal than the flag. But compromise being in the blood of this country, how about "St Valentine"s day of the national flag heritage"?

If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant

How many days off does Alberta have compared to the rest of Canada?

A holiday in February may be a good idea, but to have it the day after St. Valentine's Day, isntead of on it? That is just dumb. It should either be the second Monday of the month, the second Friday of the month, or on St. Valentine's itself. I'd go with Valentine's. Spin it as some sort of tribute to the virtue of love, and go with it.

Peggy Nash sent the committees two possible dates.

February 2nd and February 14th.

The CPC said, we can't have the 2nd because it's groundhog Day and Canada would be laughed at. We are the country of the Beaver not the Groundhog.

The Liberals said, it can't be the 14th. That's Valentines Day and though everyone loves Canada, it just wouldn't be right to infringe upon cupid turf. That would be politically incorrect.

Peggy then Suggested that the Holiday fall on Flag Day on the 15th. But the BQ said no. Screw off.

So Peggy went back to the Libs and Conservatives and suggested the 9th as a compromise.

The Conservatives said, that it might be ok. But the Liberals couldn't agree with the Conservatives because they were conservatives and if anyone should take a day put forward by the NDP it should be them, because they take all the NDP ideas whether they want them or not.

The conservatives got tough and said, no way the 9th is ours and the day off will be the 9th.

The Liberals, wanting a day couldn't accept this, and felt a compromise was needed. Currently the 14th was just too controversial, but a ground hog is close to a beaver and maybe the 2nd wasn't so bad.

The NDP thought the 9th wasn't too bad and put their support behind the 9th. But the BQ blocked that thinking that the 2nd was far better and they figure that a ground hog was an under appreciated animal.

Then the BQ and the Liberals got into a fight over whether they should get the holiday when the groundhog sees his shadow or not.

Seeing that the committee was in stalemate. A compromise was made again.

Since the Groundhog, wasn't a bad creature, and since we want to respect the groundhog, but not get in the limelight of Groundhog day, we could choose a day that was Symbolic of the ground hog. So they decided to pick a day from the 20th onward.

The Conservatives still thought the 9th wasn't to bad, and in the confusion of agreement all parties then choose the two dates together and thus the holiday

February 29th.

February 29th.

The Conservatives just disagreed with that date because that is when Trudeau went for his walk in the snow.

BC has BC Day on the same say. I suspect other provinces have similar holidays.

The last thing we need is another statutory holiday - all they do is increase the cost of employing a person from the perspective of a business.

To fly a plane, you need both a left wing and a right wing.

The same. We don't 'actually' get the Civic holiday, but most employers give it anyways. Banks here are closed on Family day and the Civic day.

Corner Brook, NL has its civic stat holiday in February to coincide with its annual winter carnival. Its great if you are into winter sports and/or activities but if you arent its really not that big of a deal.

Call it "National Beer and Popcorn Day"

The Govt can send everyone a cheque for $20 so they can get a 12 pack and a bag of popcorn. :D

Harper differed with his party on some key policy issues; in 1995, for example, he was one of only two Reform MPs to vote in favour of federal legislation requiring owners to register their guns.
