blueblood Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 CTV Hmmm, interesting way to try and boost support in quebec. I don't know how much land is worth in Quebec, but I don't think your run of the mill farmer is going to be able to afford it. I can see that land going over a thousand bucks an acre. August1991 Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 Hmmm, interesting way to try and boost support in quebec. I don't know how much land is worth in Quebec, but I don't think your run of the mill farmer is going to be able to afford it. I can see that land going over a thousand bucks an acre. This is very symbolic. In 1969, to build an insanely large airport, the federal Liberals under Trudeau expropriated a large area of land against the opposition of many people (particularly rural) in Quebec. Mirabel turned into a white elephant and is symbolic (like the sponsorship scandal) of how the federal government is out of touch with Quebec politics. Harper is sending a strong signal. BTW, the federal Liberals wanted to build a similar, gigantic airport near Toronto but the Liberal caucus managed to get Trudeau to change his mind. Quote
watching&waiting Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 The land around Mirabel will probably go to land speculators that want to hold on to it for when construction companies want it for sub-divisions. While not fully built up to capacity the city of St Jerome will have to do some growing to before that land is needed in high priced transactions. The trouble is that St Jerome took a big hit when the airport was not the huge flight hub that it was expected to be. Yes it was a very large and deep hole that liberals thru money at againand again. The only time it was filling a need was whne the Concords were flying and could not use the other airports safely. Quote
blueblood Posted December 18, 2006 Author Report Posted December 18, 2006 Wouldn't Harper almost be better off giving the land away? I know land adjacent to Winnipeg is well over 1000 bucks an acre (saw it in the western producer), land rents for 43 bucks an acre where I live, it sells for probably 500-1000 bucks an acre depending on quality. Anyhoo, the point I'm trying to make is wouldn't it be more symbolic to toss the Quebec farmers (who he's pandering too) a nice bone by making it free. Jeez the aboriginals are going to have a coniction fit when they get wind of this. guyser Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 $100 an acre?? Where the H do you live? What I would have if land at my cottage was worth $100 an acre , instead of $100 a sq centimetre. Funny, I would be poorer , yet have more land. Quote

I live in an area where nobody wants to live, hence the low land values. (Western Manitoba), bah i slipped it's 500-1000 bucks an acre where i'm from and more around the peg, my apologies. seabee Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 If the federal government were to give the properties back to their original owners or their estate, that would mean only about 125 families. That does not register at voting time. Besides, many of the town people at Mirabel are not particularly happy that the land was not given to the municipality. Quote

Well it is private property, which was expropriated, I don't know if those guys got compo for it or not hopefully they did. Those families have had a title deed so the land was legally theirs, the municipality from what I understand has no special claim to it. If the land is going to be "sold" back, then the municipality can get in line and cough up like the farmers. This is funny though as 11,000 acres split up between 125 families only results in about 88 acres between them, (I hope they're growing vegetables, or expanding their dairy industry). 11,000 acres is A LOT of land to stick an airport on, but for farmng it's the size of 1 big grain farm. The only way this would help out at voting time is the idea behind it.
