For some reason I doubt he'd be attacked for starting the food bank. Besides Edmonton is a stronghold for the provincial Liberal's historically.

He didn't have a great go of it running the food bank in Edmonton. It was only when his research showed that Loughheed's cuts had contributed to people coming to the food bank rather than lazy people looking for a free meal that Loughheed increased welfare funding.

I hope he runs in my riding in Winnipeg, I'd vote for him. I think our former Liberal MP, Reg Alcock, has already said he won't run again, so Winnipeg South is in need of a good Liberal candidate.

That's the riding they are talking about. That or Charleswood.

If there is a good proposal in Edmonton, why not? But then he'd be fighting an entire province who would call him a carpetbagger and non-resident who foolishly tried to feed the poor the last time he was in the city.

You're from Winnipeg and don't really understand the Prairies? That is a little odd isn't it? Do you honestly think that people in Edmonton wouldn't vote for Kennedy because he started the food bank?

That's pretty stereotypical and demeaning.

Edmonton Strathcona is a very winnable riding for a non-Conservative.

Represented provincially by Libs and Dippers.

Contains the U of A. Big francophone population.

The current MP, Rahim Jaffer, still has one big strike against him. i.e. a certain non-radio interview.

Dion is a verbose, mild-mannered academic with a shaky grasp of English who seems unfit to chair a university department, much less lead a country.

The boy needs to run in Calgary. I'll campaign for him. He'll lose, but holy hell it would be a statement. The Liberals might even gain a drop of crediability out here.

Alberta is not about to elect any Liberals federally even ones that they might like.

As for thinking Edmonton wouldn't support him. Paul Jackson of the the Sun called him "a radical left-wing activist" because he ran a food bank and his involvement with the poor. Jackson affirmed that again just a few days ago on radio.

Kennedy himself said that while the PCs tried to recruit him to run in Alberta, there was strong resistance to him because of the food bank.

Don't you live in Harper's riding? Sorry, I'd rather see Kennedy in the House of Commons than simply run to make a statement. You can come to Winnipeg to help with the campaign, though! Winnipeg South just barely went to the Conservatives last time, and Rod Broonuige isn't much of an MP so far; he ran a good campaign, but has been basically invisible ever since. I get more information from Steven Fletcher, the Conservative MP for Charleswood, than from Broonuige (not sure why Fletcher can't figure out where the boundaries of his riding are, though).

MPs frank using postal codes. Sometimes if a postal code straddles two ridings they'll send into the entire Postal Code area. The only option is not to send any mail at all...

The current MP, Rahim Jaffer, still has one big strike against him. i.e. a certain non-radio interview.

What's this about??

In 2000 Jaffer's family was opening a coffee shop in the riding at the time he had a radio interview booked. Instead of cancelling something because he double-booked Jaffer had an assistant appear on the radio program. A listener caught on and it created a little sh*tstorm. Rick Mercer made fun. Jaffer cried and apologized on TV. A lot of people in the riding still remember and are still angry about it.

Poor immigrants?

1. The immigrant population isn't very high in his riding. Are you thinking of Edmonton-Mill Woods?

2. Jaffer does much better in the poorer parts of that riding than he does in the richer part. There are some very rich parts closer to the U of A. Filled with silver-spoon socialists who don't vote for him. If a dipper or lib can really increase the vote in those areas they have a shot.

It would have to take somebody really good to beat him though.

Oh yes I remember hearing about this a while back.

No doubts it was a dumbass move. But isn't "low of lows" a little histrionical?

I would expect something like that out of the third world, not here in Canada.

But yeah, there could be much lower.

Yup, but Kennedy shouldn't run here. Up against Anders he'd stand the slightest of a chance, but if he could get his message out about building an enterprise economy and modernizing Canada to compete with the world, he'd win over Calgary-West. Is he the door knocker type though? Anders was out of town nearly the entire last election.

I'm not a Liberal, just someone that'd lend my vote to them if Kennedy were in charge. I'd morally struggle with helping elect a Liberal MP to assist Dion, someone who I obviously highly dislike.

I'll be in Winnipeg early January (unfortunately) with some work. If the election is called while the MP's are on holidays , I'll help out while I'm there. Otherwise, Kennedy needs to go more west to get my support.

Rumour is that Rob was ordered out of town as part of Harper's "Let's keep the rednecks and buffoons quiet so we can actually win" strategy.

Can't even believe Kennedy would have the slightest of a chance.

The Libs have to decide how safe a riding they want to give Kennedy.

Edmonton Strathcona and Winnipeg South are the only real possibles in thr prairies. Too bad they both have some of the few visible minorities in the Conservative caucus...

Rob is not liked whatsoever by his constituents... they just support the CPC through him. With a high profile Liberal speaking of making small business and investment work in this country running there, he'd have a chance against Rob. Rob is a backwoods idiot most days (I admire his stances on human rights, however) in a not very backwoods riding in Calgary.

Are you from Calgary? Do you know what Calgary-West is? It's a pretty nice area if your not from here, we're not talking Calgary Sun reading Forest Lawn folks that start banging their beer on the table when Anders makes a silly comment. These are generally high-income professionals, they vote for whoever cuts them a better deal.

Would Kennedy win? Maybe not this time around. But boy it'd send a message. A Liberal hasn't been elected in Calgary since the '60's (may have been '58....). Having their heir to the throne run here, that'd be a statement that never has been matched before.

Winnipeg South has the big ole U of M there, with a ginormous university population and the tory MP won by a hair. A high profile Lib candidate would get this riding for sure.

Yes, I do live in Calgary. Live about a mile east of the riding. Your reading of the riding is pretty weak. In the nine elections since this riding has been formed it has gone PC, Harper or Anders everytime.

Rob pisses a lot of people off with some of the things he says and does. The voters haven't even come close to punishing him for that. Just look at the results of the riding. Rob won by 24,000 votes in January. People don't really care about the candidate in this riding.

The Liberals have put up some pretty high profile candidates, for Liberals in Calgary that is, in this riding. Bronco ran in 1997 for the Liberals and lost by 9.000 votes. Bill code ran there in 1984 and got CRUSHED, losing by 31,000 votes.

This is not a winnable riding. There isn't a winnable riding in Calgary for Kennedy.

Would all the oil execs and other people whose livelihood depends on the industry living in the riding vote for Stephane "carbon tax" Dion?

What message would Kennedy send by running in Calgary West? I'm willing to parachute into a riding I have ZERO connection with in order to get handed my arse in the general election?

Definitely a good point, exactly why I won't Liberal this election.

Or that the future Liberal leadership is genuinely interested in being a national party again.

How about this for a deal...Kennedy runs in Calgary next election, and Harper runs in Toronto

Almost three thousand people died needlessly and tragically at the World Trade Center on September 11; ten thousand Africans die needlessly and tragically every single day-and have died every single day since September 11-of AIDS, TB, and malaria. We need to keep September 11 in perspective, especially because the ten thousand daily deaths are preventable.

By admitting they have zero local talent and have to parachute in a candidate with no connection to the riding who makes his home 3,000 KMs away?

The Liberals have made a serious push for seats in Alberta in ONE Federal election since 1972. If they wanted to send a message about the fulture Liberal leadership being genuinely interested in being a National party again why not run Kennedy in a winnable Alberta riding?
