geoffrey Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 Ok...how much do border guards make a year? 50K? Times that by 400, that's $20 million per year. What about the other $80 million? Careful, benefits and associated costs can be equal to salary... especially an unionised (an unionised... where grammar sounds like shit) government worker. So now we are at around $40 million in personel costs... add on another $10mil in training. Then the costs of the firearms... personally I don't know how much a 9mm goes for. Let's say $1k. So a few million more. Then that training. Now we are approaching the $60mil marker. Add in your typical Quebec jobs required with all government projects... a New Brunwick call centre so they can get help if they forget how to take the safety off. Getting closer and closer. Add another $25K for benefits per guard there is $10 million more ... now. Factoring in they are making 50K a year now, do the cost of living and other raises. They will probably be averaging $80k a year by 2017 which is when the $1 Billion projection ends. through in the cost of benefits by then equallng $40k a year. that would probably average out to $50 million a year over ten years. that's half the money right there. Now you need training, the cost of the actual weapons, renovations/construction costs at crossing points, building a training centre, trainers, etc.... blueblood Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 From the link: The biggest chunk of cash, he said, will likely go to hire 400 new guards to augment the 4,800 already on duty at land border points. The aim is to ensure there are at least two officers on duty at any given time and at any given border crossing. Ok...how much do border guards make a year? 50K? Times that by 400, that's $20 million per year. What about the other $80 million? Maybe a well deserved pay raise to the rest of the 4800 plus equipment infrastructure etc. Quote "Stop the Madness!!!" - Kevin O'Leary "Money is the ultimate scorecard of life!". - Kevin O'Leary Economic Left/Right: 4.00 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.77
M.Dancer Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 The article has been revised from when I first linked it."Actual firearms training will likely cost $40 million a year, he said. But there will be additional spending on new training facilities and other infrastructure, as well as administrative and support expenses." The promise during the election was that it would be $100 million total. A huge increase from a promise not well costed out. Do you have a problem with arming border guards? If money is such a big deal why not cut funding to the CBC? This is money well-spent. I know I have absolutely zero problem with armed guards, considering that they have to deal with crack head americans coming here to seel their wares......it's ministerial incompetence and phoney election promises that I have a problem with. Figleaf Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 A BILLION dollars? To defend us from what? Are we in Fantasyland here? This isn't the Afgan/Pakistan border is it? Are there hordes of crazed Americans assaulting our borders all of a sudden? This sounds like hysteria to me. And maybe anti-Americanism. Quote
