Guest Warwick Green
I watched a TV program about a female pope recently. Is it true?Pope Joan That reminds of when Pope John XXIII was elected. In some quarters he was referred to as Pope John XXIII the Second since dependent on which line of apostolic succession you followed there had already been a Pope John XXIII. The Catholic Church will tell you that "Pope Joan" is a fable but who knows...
Drea
I watched a TV program about a female pope recently. Is it true?Pope Joan Why the "puky face" in the headline? Is it really that distainful if a woman were to be leader of the Catholic Church?
kilkee
If there was a Pope Joan or John in those dark ages and if this story is true, why would the church go to so much trouble to cover it up?

Good point. They never covered up (to any real extent) the child pope, or all the pope vs. pope conflicts with the anti-popes. And theres been the controversy of the married popes. All in all though, the Catholics have been pretty accepting of Popes, we've have black ones, arab ones, every different type really. Probably the only religion that can claim such multiethnic diversity in leadership.

Guest Warwick Green
Probably the only religion that can claim such multiethnic diversity in leadership. Not to mention gay and pedophile Priests. Nor a 500 year period where all Popes were Italian. We've now had two Popes from other Eurpoean countries. Will a black African be next? One thing that all religions do is shape history to conform with their own teachings. As an example, in school I was taught that the Papacy evolved and was not really established until the 5th century - not exactly what is taught in Catholic schools.
