blackbird Posted April 11 Report Posted April 11 (edited) Just read that a BC court of appeal gave a large island of 510 square kilometers, along the west coast of Vancouver Island to natives. This island comprised much crown land and a provincial park. This is a massive piece of land. Not long ago the BC NDP signed an agreement handing over Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) to the native band there. A court ruled that a large part of the city of Richmond BC belongs to the Cowichan band which lives on Vancouver Island, far from Richmond, BC. This was done allegedly because some FN ancestors used to travel to that area of Richmond to fish along the coast. There are other rulings that are affecting mining negatively also. The BC NDP says they won't repeal DRIPA, a law they brought in a few years back that gives FNs possible rights over private property and resource development in B.C. This is appalling and the NDP claims they are going to amend DRIPA shortly. But they don't give the public details about what they are doing and also don't give the public information about the negotiations that are going on behind closed doors with FNs bands either. The public has a right to know what is going on here. These events in BC could set a precedent for the rest of Canada and should be of major concern. I should mention the federal government is doing nothing to protect private property rights in Canada either. Edited April 12 by blackbird Quote
herbie Posted April 12 Report Posted April 12 Another post on the identical theme. This one wishing to politicize the Courts. Tsk, tsk! Quote
