herbie Posted March 3 Report Posted March 3 Friends came over yesterday to wait for a meat delivery. They live rural and used my address in town as the dedlivery address. She told me of the great deal they got. 60lbs of beef @ $7 /lb. The dropoff was scheduled to somethine before 5 pm. When I asked who she got it from, mentioning the names of several companies in the area, she told me a Facebook ad by a company that delivered 'all over BC'.... so 5:30 an no one came. Got the name of the company, it was in a town like 1500 km away and called. She started talking and the first thing the guy said was "You didn't order through Facebook, did you?" Someone had posted their name, logo as an ad, removed the contact and town they were in and posted the delivers all over BC bit on the ad. Interceptd all the $$ from people. They'd reported it to FB, their bank and the RCMP. Told her to call her credit card, reverse it and give them the RCMP case number. Ripped of a disability pensioner for $420. I myself reported to them half a dozen times that the "Indfian Tax Free Smokes' ads that pop up every few days break the law on advertising tobacco and tax evasion. They still pop up. You don't believe a damn thing you see on that platform unless you know th OP. Teh you can decide if that person is reliable or just another dumb twat. Quote
herbie Posted March 4 Author Report Posted March 4 BTW 3 years ago it took a massive effort including contacting a woman's bank to stop her when she "won a Mercedes Benz on Facebook" and all she had to do was send $5000 to this person to pay the 'border fees'.... She argued for months and was mad when the bank stopped her. Didn't speak to me for years fo 'think I was so smart". Also ran into one mtself, someone hacked my next door neighbour's account, sent a couple innocent posts for a week or two then tried to lure me with US Govt has so much ectra money they're giving it away scam. Even linked to a website showing Fedex delivering huge boxes of cash to people's door.... I went over to warn him his account was hacked and found out his tablet broke and he hadn't been on Facebook in over a year. Quote
ironstone Posted March 4 Report Posted March 4 These scammers are REALLY good at what they do and pretty sophisticated. Someone I know recently got nailed for a couple thousand bucks from a FB scam. It was an ad that he saw and he was told to download some apps on his smartphone. One was Crypto.com which I believe is a legit app, the other one was 'anydesk' which I think will allow the person at the other end to take control of. your device. It was an investment scam promising massive returns. He told me about it a couple of days after he got into it and I did warn him that it sounded pretty suspect. Needless to say he didn't listen. I am glad I deleted my Facebook account last July. Too many scammers out there. Quote
